Chapter 270 If you leave me now

Learning to use electricity was one of humanity's biggest milestones. It meant that they no longer had to be afraid of darkness as their cities were brightly lit even at night and cities remained awake even long after people went to sleep. People were able to work night shifts and the young even were able to party at night and go home, most of the time without worries.

But those times were long gone.

Night wasn't for humans anymore, it was for the sinister creatures that inhabited the unseen depths of the darkness, foul places were the light wasn't allowed. Unfortunately for Uriel's group, the lost city of San Antonio had become such a place.

As the last beams of sun disappeared on the horizon, the hunters realized how diresome their situation was.

Faint noises resounded on the distance, a falling rock here, the sound of something hitting a tin roof there, but as time passed the sounds became louder and closer.@@novelbin@@

Usually, a small group like that wouldn't be troubled by the presence of cryptids as they would take measures to remain hidden and fight on their own terms but now things were different. They were already engaged in combat, which meant they could do nothing to hide anymore.

To make matters even worse, something was coming for them and they knew it.

"I- can't- keep up." Emma said with a jagged breath. As an evolved, she was the slowest and she also tired more easily than her new companions.

"Me- neither." Uriel let out as he crumbled in the ground. Never in his life had he faced so many cryptids on melee combat, it was even more exhausting than exploring the happy hunting grounds because at that time they had the help of a holy rank hunter, but now they were on their own.

"Don't worry, we'll call for help!" Sophie said without even stopping her race. She was the intellectual one in her group and was well aware of the meaning behind her words.

"That's code for leaving us to die and you know it." Uriel glared at her.

"Don't even think about it Sophie, if you want to go I'm not stopping you but we won't leave him behind after all he's done for us!" There were no traces of her usual emotional outbursts nor was she being overly dramatic. Tina was stating a fact.

Uriel inwardly cursed as he hoped they would leave them behind so he could summon the Jaguar spirit and make a run for it along with Emma. It was easier to silence one person than a whole group, especially Tina's group since he had nothing to offer in return of her silence.

Them staying behind, also meant that he would have to take responsibility for their safety because, as bothersome as it was, he was set on paying people the same kindness they showed him.

Just when Uriel was trying to think of a possible solution to his conundrum, a loud scream was heard from behind them. It was a scream of pain, similar to a human's yet different in the most unsettling way to the point that instead of pity the hunters were filled with the most pure terror.

"He's found the eclipse!" Uriel exclaimed.

"Who's he?" Tina asked, not sure if she wanted to hear the answer.

"It doesn't matter, leave with your friends. I'll meet you at the city gate."

Tina looked at Uriel with a faint smile filled with sorrow and happiness. The thought of losing him made her sad beyond reason but at the same time, she couldn't help but feel a bit happy that he cared for her.

"Don't do this, we can still go."

"Run!" Uriel shouted in exasperation. He wasn't wiling to show her the jaguar spirit, but letting her see the effects of Water warlock's blessing was absolutely forbidden.

Even if at some point of his life they had been close, he didn't forget that she represented the interests of an opposing faction allied with the army and there was no saying in what they would put him through if they found out about the blessing.

Both Mary and Sophie grabbed their friend to leave, but Tina managed to free herself just long enough to plant a deep kiss on him which left him in a daze because it was something she didn't do even when they were boyfriend and girlfriend.

Uriel watched the three hunters leave with a dumbfounded look.

"I just screamed at her and she kissed me, was I supposed to do that when she was my girlfriend?" He asked out loud, but Emma didn't reply. She was shocked, petrified in fear and tears ran uncontrollably down her face. "I didn't actually meant that, I was just taken by surprise."

"You... you let them go and then worry if she's wrong in the head? How are we supposed to survive?"

Uriel dropped his accustomed 'pretend' face and came back to his cold emotionless one, the one that came more naturally to him after sacrificing his heart to Water warlock.

"You said your last name is Sage, didn't you?"

"Why does it matter!? We're about to be surrounded by monsters and you said something else is coming! We're dead anyway!"

"Just answer." Uriel's gaze showed that there was no time for games anymore.

"It is, my name is Emmanuelle Sage." She managed to stutter before receiving a powerful blow to the back of her head and falling unconscious.

Uriel had two choices, to either use her as bait or rescue her, whichever the case he still needed to knock her out. Up until she answered he was still undecided, but it was the first time he ever met someone with his last name and she could possibly be the first clue to know what happened to his parents.

He stood up and drank a can of energy drink he bought from his trait and dropped the clay figurine on the ground before activating his tier 3 battery. He then stretched his limbs right before the first cryptids started showing up and then shouted:

"Come here and make me rich you filthy cryptids!"
