Chapter 754 Useless Toads (I)
Chapter 754 Useless Toads (I)
"Fire toads in the southern sky!"
"This is not a drill!"
"We're under attack!"
The first defensive line that guarded the borders of the Great Smoky Mountains was a blaze of activity. A toad army of various sizes hopped around madly, trying to figure out what to do. King Huo Tu rivaled Queen Sundew in many ways, among them was his ability to produce frog children.
Countless numbers crawled out of their holes within the mountains. Red ones were adept at flame-attribute spiritual energy. Each one was like a siege engine that could lob fireballs great distances. Green ones were experts at poison, just a single drop was fatal to a cultivator at the Spirit Initiate Realm. There were other colors; yellow, orange, blue, more types than one could keep track of.
The biggest of the bunch, an orange-colored frog the size of a small horse hopped out and shouted over the others, "Queen Sundew approaches! Unannounced! And she is not alone, she is accompanied by two strange immortals! Prepare the defensive formation! I will seek approval from the lord!"
"Yes, big brother!"
"Big brother is mighty!"
This frog named Huo Ding was the strongest of the bunch and the direct subordinate of Huo Ping. It quickly hopped into the lord's residence and tried to enter the bedroom, only to be blocked by a thin layer of immortal energy.
"My lord! Lord Huo Ping!" Huo Ding shouted, "We're under attack! My lord! Are you awake?"
Unfortunately for Huo Ding and the frog army, Huo Ping was indeed asleep at this critical time. It was still recovering from the burns it had suffered a few days prior. Just a few hours ago, it had bathed in a medicinal mud pool as well as downing eight tankards of the finest Long Yang Pure Spirit in one sitting. It was no surprise that he had fallen asleep. Even as an immortal, one was not immune to such mortal pleasures.
It took several minutes of nonstop shouting for Huo Ping to finally stir. He groaned and slowly got out of the shallow puddle of water that served as his bed. He stretched his large body, wincing slightly at the tender burn wounds all over his body.
He hated his life. He often questioned the point of it all when he was alone. Sure, Huo Tu was his sire and his king. But was it worth living in such misery?
The king had blamed the loss of the wolf twins and that stupid green goblin on him. The king had also blamed the defeat at the siege of Beast God City. The king simply blamed him for everything and punished him for every little thing.
"Where is my wine?" He grumbled, ready to drown his sorrows with more human concoctions.
Just as he was about to start searching, he remembered that his subordinate Huo Ding was still shouting outside, something about an emergency.
"Eh? Speak clearly, I can't understand you. Say it louder!"
After another series of incoherent croaks, Huo Ping remembered something. He waved his hand, dispelling the privacy barrier. Huo Ding tumbled inside, panting and gasping.
"My lord, my lord, we're under attack!"
"Grrr… who dares to attack?" @@novelbin@@
"Queen Sundew! With two strange immortals!"
Huo Ping felt a jerk as his consciousness emerged from the prior haze. Finally realizing the seriousness of the situation, he hopped into the frantically.
"Prepare for battle, I will activate the formation!"
With a surge of spiritual energy, Huo Ping shot towards the peak. His base already resided on the highest mountain within this mountain range that extended east to west for a thousand kilometers. It was the first gate into the Great Smoky Mountains.
However…
Just as he was about to reach the peak, a pillar of flame shot across his head, forming a wall of fire that blocked his path. He was immediately reminded of his king and sire due to the intensity of the heat and the sheer power and might of the spiritual aura. However, these flames were clearly blue like the sky.
"Who is it?"
The question was soon answered as Chen Wentian appeared, first appearing as a tiny dot in the sky that rapidly grew in size. He was flying at his fastest possible speed, holding nothing back.
"Human?" Huo Ping asked incredulously. "Where is Queen Sundew?"
Chen Wentian ignored the stupid expression on the frog and attacked quickly. He shot out fireballs rapidly, covering the whole side of the mountain and transforming it into a blue inferno. Frogs died by the thousands and tens of thousands, instantly incinerated and turned to ash.
Huo Ping fared little better. Blue flames wracked his body until there was only pink flesh. There wasn't a single scrap of rainbow skin left to be seen.
"Ahhhh! Mercy… Ahhhhhhh! Don't kill me!"
In the few seconds it took to subdue Huo Ping, Sundew arrived with Jasmine close behind. When Huo Ping saw the trio, his eyes almost popped out of their burnt-out sockets.
Sundew flew down and stroked the unfortunate toad's head, "Huo Ping, we won't kill you. Of course, if you try anything or do anything that deserves death, then I will make sure that it is long and painful."
"Y… yes, Sundew. I only live to obey."
Huo Ping was supposed to be King Huo Tu's most seasoned underling. However, facing three Spirit Kings, he did not even dare to have rebellious thoughts. First of all, he wasn't feeling very loyal to his sire to begin win. Secondly, he simply wanted to live.
"Good," Queen Sundew said, "Just stay here obediently. My children will come soon. Don't fight them either. If you are a good boy, I can heal you back to full health. Don't worry, we have no ill intentions toward King Huo Tu. We just want to have a little chat."
Huo Ping could only nod vigorously. He wasn't sure what kind of chat required three Spirit Kings and he didn't want to know.
"Alright, let's go," Chen Wentian waved his hand.
"Coming."
Sundew flew up and joined him and Jasmine, leaving Huo Ping. It didn't matter too much if Huo Ping wanted to do anything to block their way. Chen Wentian had already damaged the mountain formation beyond recognition. The fire frogs were still transmitting their arrival in front but they would not be able to give King Huo Tu much of a heads-up.
The only things that could have delayed them were the various defensive formations that protected the Great Smoky Mountains. However, with Huo Ping behind them and Huo Yan too busy frolicking with the king toad, there was nobody else standing guard.
"Useless toads," Sundew muttered, "I can't believe that Old Huo has gotten this careless. He used to have five Spirit Lords, the most out of all of us. You won't believe how arrogant he was back then. This time, after we subdue him, I hope Miss Jasmine can make him explain just how he lost the wolf twins and that goblin."
"Oh, that," Chen Wentian laughed, "It was us. Jasmine and I, we did that."
"… What!"
