Volume 13 Chapter 54: Brian Vs Keith Part 1
Lola introduced, "Let's begin with Chef Brian and his dishes!" The chefs quickly brought up their appetizers.
"Dear judges, what you have before you is toasted bread with rush bull on the top. In addition, on top are diced tomatoes roasted in some rose herbs." Each plate contained three. A brown and red jewel crowned on top of bread.
Cadmus and the judges took a bite. Instantly, the variant's flavor hit their mouth. A tender meat filled with juices with an assortment of spices.
“Delicious.” “Indeed.” Cadmus, Erwin, Virel, and the last judge muttered.
"As expected of the variant." The variant was able to elevate his dish to another level. Brian grinned at all of the praises. However,
“You put too much lemon into the sauce, and not only that, the bread was toasted for five seconds more than it should.”
“…Yes.” Brian couldn't refute his words. Unlike the positive views he got from the others, his teacher was harsh on him from the get-go.
Hearing this, Lola quickly added, “Now, let’s get on with the main dish!” That was something the others wanted to know.
That irritation that Brian had quickly changed to pride as he revealed it, “Presenting you with the steak with a red wine with broccoli on the side. I've also used butter to broil the potato. I hope you don't mind.”
It was a sneer towards Keith; using his ingredients to beat him was the best.
Keith only shrugged his shoulders, undisturbed by his provocation.
“…” The judges were silent as they marveled at the dish. The aroma was the first thing that hit them. That alone was enough to cause them to be mesmerized by a symphony of flavors. With one bite of the steak, they understood. His head turned to Baker, who nodded,
“You’ve done well.” A few words, but that was enough. A giant victorious grin appeared on Brian’s face!
I won! That was something he knew for sure.
"And for dessert, please bring it forward!"
Baker opened his last dish, "Presenting butter corn." Lastly was something sweet. Cadmus and the others ate it with relish while Baker was silent.
"..." Carolyn and the others frowned. Hearing all those positive reviews made them annoyed.
"Using a variant is unfair," Herrick muttered. The variant really gave everything an advantage.
“Hearing these critiques! Now, let's have our next contestant! Student Keith, please present the judges with your dishes."
Keith nodded as he brought his first dish forward. But before he opened it for him, Baker already had a frown. What have you made? That was because of the boy's limitations.
Almost all of the ingredients he had were basically destroyed. Moreover, he could tell that meat was supposed to be his main dish. So what was he going to do with those scraps?
Opening the lid, “My appetizer is a thousand layered potatoes with a bechamel and pearl beet.” What was before then was a giant golden square before them. Moreover, there was also a drizzle of white sauce around. A beautiful mixture of gold and silver.
People would think this was a golden ingot!
“…” Baker's eyes widened, mesmerized by this dish. Those thoughts he had before were nowhere to be found. He made this?
More so than his bafflement, the audience was taken aback! Craig laughed, “He made something like that?” That was amazing, given that he had only used potatoes.
"Thousand layered potatoes." Kaiser tilted his head. If that was the case...
What about the taste? Baker continued to analyze the dish. Presentation-wise, this was beautiful. The layered potatoes were held together, creating a beautiful square. With his knife, he gently sliced a piece.
A crisp and light touch. There was no need to use so much force. The moment it entered, the old chef's eyes widened in disbelief. What a refined taste! The exterior had a rich flavor and crispy exterior. However, the inside was soft and silky! The kicker to make this even better was how each time he chewed, there was this layering taste to it. It was incredible.
“Seconds!” “Same!” Cadmus and Erwin already finished their dish as they stared at Keith for more. The boy tilted his head, “What are you guys going on about?” This is a competition, not an all-you-can-eat buffet!
Even Baker retorted, “Judges, you have to savor each bite!” How could they finish all of this without savoring it? But that was when he turned to Keith and asked, “When I ate the potato, did you add something between the layers?”
Keith smiled, “Mmhmm, I added some lily potato skins and some lemon zest to give slight bitter notes."
“No wonder.” The bitter notes helped out with the richness of the potatoes. Baker added, “But why did you add the peels?” He understood the lemon zest. However, the lily potato peels were a complete outlier. It would have been considered trash. Keith added, “I figure it would be a waste to leave such a nutritious element out.” “Nutritious?”
“Lily potatoes are amazing; the peels also contain a good amount of nutrients and also have a subtle, gentle, sweet taste.” For lily potatoes to grow, they absorb the water and make it grow. The skins would be the ones to do so.
“Ingenious,” Baker muttered.
What do you think?
