Volume 14 Chapter 13: Baking Bread In The Morning
The next day, Keith's face was being smooshed by something. It was uncomfortable yet soft at the same time.
"Ngh, five more minutes." However,
"Keith! Wake up now! We have to get up early and bake bread!" A childlike and pouty voice sounded as she continued to punch his face. There was no attack damage to all of this. Only cute and soft.
“Fira, you got to stop waking me up like this.” It was the middle of the night! This little spirit was like a worse version of Cadmus. Well, cuter, and it was normal for her. She was not alone in this as one snowball nibbled on his face.
"Mir, stop." Another groan came out.
“But-Mghh!” That was when Keith grabbed one snowball and chucked him on top of the little spirit’s body before snuggling them as he returned to sleep. How was this going to be his day? Despite their rustle in his hold, he would not get up.
“Papa! Up!” Eri was also poking him in the face. Lei jumped up and down on his stomach.
An attack on all sides made Keith groan, “Okay, okay. I will get up.” There was no way he would get to sleep in this situation. Getting up, "How long were you guys up?" These children were wide-eyed and ready to go!
"Enough! We were nudging you." Fira and them grinned proudly.
"..."
"Bread!"
“Be quiet as we head to the kitchen; we don’t want to wake the others up.” Just because they were up, it didn't mean the others were.
“Mmhmm!” The others nodded, and like so, they headed to the kitchen. He took a deep breath, “Okay, for today, we will make some bread. And it’s going to be different this time.”
“Yay!” “Po!”
“For starters, can you get eggs and fruit from the garden? Gather as much as you can. There’s no need for milk from Gala. But if she wants, get it from her.” From how much Eri had gotten from the cow, there was no need for it. It was just an absurd amount.
“Mmhmm!” The fox girl and the creatures dashed out. Keith took a deep breath. While they get the materials, I need to think of a way to deal with this. He takes out the white rocks he had obtained from the dungeon. From the touch and the taste alone, Keith understood.
Baking soda.
To think he was able to obtain something like this. He thought there was no way he could recreate baking soda in this world. Never underestimate a magic world.
From the way Madison talked about it, no one understood how useful it was in baking. He couldn’t help but be enthusiastic about this.
However, he was going to need baking powder as well. Each one had a different function. Baking powder is more useful for helping baked goods rise, while soda helps with browning and also for some savory dishes.
I can make baking powder from baking soda. Baking powder is basically baking soda. However, it contains acids, which makes it work with heat and moisture. That was why he needed to incorporate something like vinegar and lemon. However,
It would change the flavor profile. Lemon and vinegar have a distinct taste. Usually, it was tartar that was used to make baking powder. I think it should be fine for now. Now that he thought about it, specifically for the baked goods he would make, lemon was a good pairing. While he thought about what to do,
“Back!” Eri returned with a giant basket full of different types of fruits.
“Thank you so much.” Keith patted her head, and that was when he got to work. And it was going to be quick work as he would be incorporating things into it.
“Mmhmm!” “Eri, you got this!” Fira pumped her fist as the little fox was the muscles in this group. Lei and Mir used their bodies to hold the bowl and waddle in circles to make the mixing much smoother for the child.
As the fox girl continued to stir the bowl as much as she possibly could, Keith started to wash some of the blueberries. He tossed them into the bowl as she continued to stir, “We’re not done yet. I think it’s time for me to pull those out.”
“Eh?” Fira tilted her head with the snowballs while Eri blinked. Keith smiled as he walked over to the counter and took out a few jars.
Cheong. It was the syrup that he had made with the mixture of fruit and sugar. Diana and the other great spirits were the ones who saw him making it. Its fruity taste would match with bread.
Syrup with the concentrated flavor of the fruit? There were no words as Keith slowly poured some of the blueberry Cheong into the batter. And that was when he placed it into a tray.
What do you think?
