Chapter 172
He Xiang felt something was off, so he followed along. From a distance, he saw Teacher Li talking to Ji Nian.
The scene seemed perfectly normal, but to He Xiang, it felt strangely unsettling.
Without realizing it, he began to move closer, but before he could get too close, a hand suddenly reached out, covering his mouth and dragging him into the shadows.
Before He Xiang could struggle, he turned around and found himself staring into a pair of familiar yet unfamiliar dark green eyes.
But what shocked him the most was the man's appearance.
His features were not gentle but rather carried an air of arrogant nobility, like a character from one of the richly colored, vibrant art books that a past volunteer teacher had shown him.
The man sat in a wheelchair, silent and imposing, making it impossible for anyone to look directly at him or approach him.
His gaze swept over He Xiang as if he were nothing more than a pebble on the side of the road, but it left He Xiang frozen, unsure of where to place his hands or feet.
Though the resemblance was striking, the differences were too great.
Is he Ji Nian's brother…?
He Xiang thought to himself, his eyes lowering slowly as he recalled the fleeting glimpse of the man's surprisingly youthful face.
Seeing that the boy had quieted down, Wei Yang, who had been covering his mouth from behind, finally let go.
Satisfied that the kid knew better than to cause trouble, Wei Yang turned his attention back to Ji Nian, following Ji Tingzhou's lead.
But then, to their surprise, Teacher Li suddenly reached out and grabbed Ji Nian, pulling the young girl back as she tried to walk away.
Even without looking back, Wei Yang could feel the murderous intent radiating from his boss. It wasn’t just a matter of restraint anymore; Ji Tingzhou was already moving toward them.
The rustling of the grass as he moved caught the attention of the others.
Teacher Li shouted in alarm.
Wei Yang cursed inwardly. After holding back for so long, they had just ruined the kid's plan.
However, Ji Nian remained calm. With lightning speed, she grabbed a cat that had been napping nearby and tossed it out into the open.
And so, the earlier scene unfolded.
Now, Ji Tingzhou took advantage of He Xiang's silence and pinned the blame for the incident on him.
By the time the Ji family swiftly dragged away the unconscious man and cleaned up the scene, Ji Nian finally broke free from her father's grip and looked around.
Her eyes met He Xiang's, who was trying hard to suppress his fear but couldn’t stop his body from trembling slightly.
For a kid his age, not wetting himself in such a situation was already quite brave.
Ji Nian turned her gaze to Ji Tingzhou.
It had only been a few days since she last saw him, but her father was still her father. He wore a traditional buttoned-up shirt, the collar covering his neck completely, and despite the summer heat, he looked cool and composed in his long sleeves.
Upon closer inspection, Ji Nian noticed that Ji Tingzhou had gotten a haircut, with a subtle change in his hairstyle.
Looks like he’s been doing just fine.
Ji Nian observed with a cold smirk.
Feeling her gaze, Ji Tingzhou looked down and met her resentful eyes.
“What are you looking at? Don’t recognize me?”
Ji Nian swallowed the comment about his new haircut and instead glanced at the wheelchair beside him.
“That wheelchair looks familiar.”
Ji Tingzhou followed her gaze. He had been sitting in it earlier while watching her, and someone had pushed it over when he stood up.
He casually kicked the wheelchair aside with his foot, acting as if it were nothing.
Of course it’s familiar.
It’s your uncle’s ride.
At that moment, Chen Mo, who was supposed to be working with Ji Tingzhou but had been left stranded after the shameless lunatic stole his wheelchair, sat motionless, his dark eyes brimming with murderous intent.
He was going to kill Ji Tingzhou.
After exchanging a few brief pleasantries with her father, whom she hadn’t seen in days, Ji Nian walked over to He Xiang.
It was clear that he had witnessed the entire bloody scene.
Both the poisoning incident and now this were because of her. Ji Nian’s eyes filled with apology as she looked at him.
“Sorry, it’s over now.”
She whispered softly, placing her hand over his terrified eyes.
Ji Tingzhou raised an eyebrow, his fingers twitching as if he wanted to pull his daughter back.
He Xiang’s vision was blocked by Ji Nian’s hand, and he caught a faint scent of her. Before he could react, he felt a sharp pain on the back of his hand, and then everything went black.
Ji Nian feigned surprise, turning to Ji Tingzhou as she supported He Xiang’s limp body. “Dad, I think he fainted from shock!”
Ji Tingzhou pulled Ji Nian back, and the bodyguards who had accompanied them caught He Xiang before he hit the ground.
Ji Nian was forced to clean her hands with disinfectant wipes.
Ji Tingzhou leaned in and whispered, “012?”
Ji Nian nodded.
She had just injected He Xiang with a memory-erasing drug, the same one she had used on Bruce before. Ji Tingzhou didn’t know why she had started referring to it by a number, but he had heard her mention it.
Though her storage space was limited, Ji Nian had inexplicably made room for one dose before leaving, and now it had come in handy.
For a kid He Xiang’s age, an event like this could haunt him for the rest of his life. Erasing the memory was the kinder option.
After disinfecting her hands, the group left.
The students were all in their club rooms, and the campus was eerily quiet.
This was, in fact, the first time Ji Tingzhou had openly visited Ji Nian’s school.
Ji Nian yawned, resting her head on his shoulder as she began to describe the school to him.
But soon, she grew tired and started dozing off.
“Sleep, little pig.”
Seeing how exhausted she was, Ji Tingzhou patted her gently.
Ji Nian shifted slightly, finding the most comfortable position, and closed her eyes, breathing in the familiar scent of incense.
Just as Ji Tingzhou was about to get into the car after placing Ji Nian inside, her eyes suddenly snapped open, and she blurted out, “I remember now.”
“That wheelchair belongs to Uncle Chen.”
She had noticed the little bunny sticker she had put on the wheel.
But before the car door could close—
A pale, slender hand suddenly gripped the edge of the door.
Chen Mo’s handsome face appeared, his lips curling into a cold smile as he glared at Ji Tingzhou.
The culprit, however, remained unfazed, sitting there with an expression that seemed to say, “What do you want?”
Chen Mo couldn’t help but laugh in frustration.
“Nian Nian, did you catch him?”
Ji Nian sat up, fully awake now, and replied, “We got him, Uncle. I thought you weren’t coming.”
Then, remembering the wheelchair, she slowly pieced things together and glanced at Ji Tingzhou.
She understood now.
Of course, it was obvious who was behind it.
Chen Mo leaned back weakly, looking exhausted. Sensing Ji Nian’s concerned gaze, he opened his eyes and gave her a reassuring smile, as if to say, “Don’t worry, I’m fine.”
Even though Ji Tingzhou had bullied him, Chen Mo didn’t say a word, nor did he seem to have the energy to argue. After all, he owed Ji Tingzhou too much.
His demeanor stirred something in Ji Nian, who had a soft spot for such things.
After a moment’s thought, she decided to stand up for her uncle.
“Dad.”
Ji Tingzhou glanced at her. “Hmm?”
“You got a haircut. The new style looks cool.”
“Like a cool head.”
What do you think?
