Chapter 497 - 58: Xiao Buli's Ambition
As a monster with a conscious mind, Bai Yunfei's life was so boring he wanted to die. But dying wasn't much of an issue for him, as he would just respawn after a short while, merely helping him to pass that hour more quickly. To him, facing the endless stream of time in the future, this was utterly insignificant.
As he lazily passed the time by counting the number of times he blinked, suddenly, in the blink of an eye, a figure appeared before him.
"What the hell?" Bai Yunfei leapt to his feet, ready to attack, but then he saw clearly that it was Xiao Buli, who had left not long ago. Xiao Buli was holding a quaint, log-colored walking stick and was grinning at him with a menacing smile.
"Old Bai~!"
"Damn it, why is it you? You came back so soon, did you find the Temple? Were you rid of the Heart Demon?" Bai Yunfei couldn't help but feel a tinge of jealousy. He wondered if it could have been he who reached the Temple and encountered the Heart Demon and the misfortune of being attacked by others if he had only persisted a bit longer. Why else would he suffer such torment here?
"Sit down, let me tell you everything." As former teammates and brothers who had faced life and death together against the company, Xiao Buli naturally trusted Bai Yunfei. He recounted everything that had happened to him, hiding nothing—of course, he left out the details about the wand and the Crystal Ball. Still, even this much left Bai Yunfei's jaw dropping wider and wider, prompting Xiao Buli to quickly push it back up. The rot that should have been a tongue was truly disgusting to behold.
"Damn, is that what this game is all about?" Bai Yunfei felt like he did when he was five years old, having found a white porcelain bead, cherishing it as a treasure in his box, imagining that it was a piece of exquisite jade worth a fortune, which would allow him to buy lots of toys and goodies. When he finally mustered the courage to show his treasured find to his brother, who was already in the third grade and vastly more experienced, his brother casually remarked, "Isn't this just a marble?" A marble? Marble!!! His brother's words echoed in his mind, shattering all his fantasies in an instant. It was exactly like the shock he felt now, "This game is an alien training software?"
"Err, to be precise, it's not from aliens, it's from a different world," Xiao Buli corrected in the tone of a Gamemaster (GM). He wasn't dissatisfied with the result; many mysteries became clear when traced back from their outcomes to their origins. What seemed to be a minor cause at the time could lead to a series of consequences, so it's best not to dwell on such trivial matters. "So, what will it be, come with me or stay here?" Xiao Buli had told Bai Yunfei the worst of what could happen if he left, so now it was up to him to choose.
"Nonsense, of course, I'd go if I can." Bai Yunfei didn't hesitate, "But can we make it to the Barbaric Wastelands in seven days? It's much further from here than the other side. I don't want to get sent back halfway through." Bai Yunfei expressed his worry.
"Don't worry, I'll handle that. I learned a teleportation array on GM's Island." Saying that, Xiao Buli began to scribble aimlessly on the ground with the walking stick. He did not want to tell Bai Yunfei about the abilities of the wand, not because he didn't trust him, but because he was too worried about the power of the system. If every NPC had a unique connection with the system, could it be that Bai Yunfei, unbeknownst to him, had some special link with the system as well? It was necessary to keep up appearances, with nothing being more important than the final goal at this point.
Bai Yunfei knew that Xiao Buli had Mage Professions, and he was not surprised. He hastily summoned the twenty or so Zombies he had carefully collected and stood them inside Xiao Buli's teleportation array. The wand could teleport up to ten units at a time, so Xiao Buli looked at the Zombies and said with a grin, "Sorry, but it can only handle ten units. Choose some." Then, he continued drawing the array.
Upon hearing this, Bai Yunfei was stricken with grief. He had come to rely on those twenty-plus Zombies. To suddenly have to leave them behind was heartbreaking. He tenderly stroked each Zombie until Xiao Buli yelled, "Hurry up, the array is ready."
When Bai Yunfei heard that, he showed no signs of reluctance, leaped into the circle, and ordered the eight Zombies closest to him to stand inside as well. The rest of them, he didn't even look back at, constantly urging, "Hurry, let's go, hurry." He obviously couldn't wait any longer.
Xiao Buli had seen Bai Yunfei's emotional farewell, but he held back his laughter and asked everyone to form a circle. Channeling his Internal Energy, they suddenly disappeared, leaving only the remaining Zombies spinning aimlessly on the ground like headless flies, now without anyone to command them.
Xiao Buli had already decided on the teleportation destination, which was the site of the Teleportation Portal inside the mountain stronghold. For one, this was Xiao Buli's first stop. Secondly, the location was concealed, and with a Teleportation Portal already present, it would be easy to explain their emergence from it.
"Ah, this is the Teleportation Portal we first used to enter the Barbarian Wilderness." As soon as Bai Yunfei opened his eyes, he recognized the familiar scene. Walking out, he saw two patrol soldiers guarding the cave entrance. "Did Liu Xing die? Why don't I even see a corpse?" Bai Yunfei couldn't help but feel sentimental again.
"Hmm, I didn't see it either." Just as he was about to change the subject, he suddenly saw the guards at the gate raising their spears towards Bai Yunfei.
"Who goes there?" the guard shouted, though it was more likely to boost his own courage, as Bai Yunfei was recognized as a Silver Name monster.
"It's okay, it's okay, we're friends," Xiao Buli hurriedly said as he ran to the front of the group, while Bai Yunfei, in urgency, led a few Zombies ahead of Xiao Buli, nearly causing a disaster.
Seeing their leader, the few guards naturally recognized him and hurriedly bowed respectfully.
"Notify Vice Fort Master Han," Xiao Buli said to the guards standing at the entrance. He suddenly remembered a big problem: coming to this world, Bai Yunfei was indeed a piece of fat meat everyone wanted to slice, a Silver Name BOSS. If it had been him in the past, he definitely would've been unable to resist chopping it a few times.
Once Han Wenhuan got the message, he immediately brought everyone running over, huffing and puffing, a good dozen people in tow. Apart from his few brothers, there were Du Yibo and others, and behind them were two unfamiliar faces that Xiao Buli didn't recognize, likely newcomers who had recently risen in the ranks.
"Boss, you're back, how did it go?" Gu Shaobang couldn't help but shout from a distance, his excitement clear in his voice.
"Let's talk about it once we're inside. This is my former company colleague, Bai Yunfei, who, due to some reasons, is now a Zombie Monster. You guys think of how we can arrange things for him. I don't want him to get chopped up by someone else," Xiao Buli hurriedly expressed his worries.
Who knew Bai Yunfei would laugh upon hearing this: "Hahaha, Old Xiao, I wondered why you had to make such a fuss about someone coming to pick you up. Turns out you were worried about me. Relax, I am a Silver Name BOSS now; ordinary folks don't catch my eye at all, let alone that I am conscious, infinitely stronger than those system monsters. Just the fact that I can have minions makes my combat abilities not fixed. Thank you for getting me out of the Endless Desert. Let's part ways here today. Wait for me to carve out a piece of the world, and when the time comes, I'll help you accomplish great things." After saying this, Bai Yunfei sprang back and neatly landed on the shoulders of two zombies walking side by side. The zombies moved in unison, and with their shoulders aligned perfectly, Bai Yunfei sat steadily, waving in one direction: "To the Mass Burial Mound, march."
"Old Bai!" Xiao Buli called out from behind, only to see Bai Yunfei turning around with a smile, not staying any longer, moving forward. Xiao Buli had been rash; he was so anxious that he had considered getting everyone together to think of a solution, forgetting that Old Bai had his pride too. Now a proud monster, how could he live under someone else's protection? Unexpectedly, this had spurred Bai Yunfei to leave, and Xiao Buli sighed.
Han Wenhuan, watching Bai Yunfei riding on the zombies' shoulders, patted Xiao Buli's shoulder: "Boss, don't be like this. Everybody has their own path to walk. Besides, he might be in greater danger if he stays here."
Xiao Buli did understand this rationale; keeping a monster among the players' group was impossible to restrain. In the end, this turned out alright. He believed that, with Bai Yunfei's long experience in this game, self-preservation was definitely not a problem. This situation was certainly better than being in that boring desert.
"Well, let him go," Du Yibo said, appearing beside Xiao Buli at some point, his words popping up in a white bubble over his head.
Seeing a former teammate turned into a monster, he felt a deep sense of relief, thankful that he hadn't entered that Teleportation Portal himself.
Turning around, Xiao Buli glanced at Du Yibo and noticed his equipment seemed to have improved significantly, undergoing a massive style change.
Looking at the others, it seemed they had all improved quite a bit as well, which was slightly comforting. With this, their next moves would be much easier.
"Boss, you're finally back. Did it go smoothly?" Gu Shaobang and others bombarded him with questions.
"It went very smoothly, but we're not done yet. We have a lot of work to do next," he replied.
"A lot of work? Like what?" Everyone showed a curious expression.
"Of course, it's slaying dragons, founding a nation, and striving for supremacy!" Xiao Buli said with a smile of confidence spreading across his face.
