Chapter 121: Chapter 121: None of Them Are Simple

Qiu Wenyin glanced at Qiu Yurou and, noticing her aunt’s displeased expression, couldn’t help but ridicule Su Meixi, “Sister-in-law, spending your husband’s money sure seems exhilarating.”

Su Meixi laughed, “You know that Gu Wei is my husband. Isn’t it natural for a wife to spend her husband’s money?”

Just then, her phone rang. It was Gu Wei.

Gu Wei had just returned from a mission, and upon turning on his phone, he saw the spending notification. His card was being used in Feng City, which meant Su Meixi was using it.

His wife finally swiped his card, and this made him very happy.

“Wife, you’re back in Feng City?”

...

“Yes, I’m having dinner with mom and my cousin.” As she spoke, Su Meixi turned on the speakerphone. “Say hello to mom and my cousin.”

At first, Gu Wei didn’t catch on to which mom and which cousin she was referring to.

He was wondering whether Su Meixi had patched things up with Fang Xin?

Fortunately, Qiu Wenyin spoke up first, calling out, “Cousin, where are you right now?”

Gu Wei could recognize Qiu Wenyin’s voice, for as a child, she liked to stay at his place, noisy and boisterous, hard to not recognize.

“I’m outside, are you all having dinner with Ah Xi?”

“Yes, sister-in-law is treating us, but she’s using your card,” Qiu Wenyin said with an unenthused tone.

Gu Wei replied, “I gave her that card the moment we married, but she never used it before. Now that she has, it’s an honor for me and I thank her for keeping her husband in her heart.”

“Cousin… nevermind, I won’t say more. Talk to aunt.”

The phone was handed to Qiu Yurou, who, holding Su Meixi’s phone, asked with an indifferent voice, “Where are you on duty?”

“Mom, that’s confidential.”

“You’re not hurt, right?”

“Of course not.”

“Good.”

Qiu Yurou didn’t mention Su Meixi, forcing Gu Wei to ask, “Mom, how did it happen that you ended up dining with Ah Xi today?”

Qiu Yurou glanced at Su Meixi and said, “You insisted on marrying her, and I couldn’t break you two up, so I might as well acknowledge her. I’ve brought her back to live at our house.”

“Back to the Gu family’s house?”

“Yes.”

Gu Wei immediately sensed it wasn’t simple. His own mother was no pushover; bringing Su Meixi back must mean she’d be under pressure.

Yet, he couldn’t say it outright, so he said, “Mom, Ah Xi has been used to living freely on her own. I’m afraid she might trouble you. Wouldn’t it be better to let her stay at Yang Guang Garden?”

“How could that be? The house is so big, living together we wouldn’t bump into each other that often. Besides, it’s safer at home. Are you coming back for the New Year?”

“Not for the time being.”

“Then take care of yourself out there. We’ve finished our meal. Your cousin just got back from the UK; she needs to rest too. I’ll hang up.”

With that, she handed the phone back to Su Meixi.

“I’ll drop mom and cousin home first, then contact you later,” Su Meixi told Gu Wei.

“Weren’t you driven here by a driver?” Gu Wei asked.

“The driver went home for the New Year. Let’s not talk about it, I’ll hang up now.” Su Meixi hung up after saying this.

The more Gu Wei listened, the more something seemed off, so he hurriedly called Gu Cheng.

After picking up and hearing the situation from Gu Wei, Gu Cheng couldn’t help frowning, “Mom won’t let me live there, so I can’t help Xiao Xi. But don’t worry, your wife is no naive woman. I’m aware of everything that goes on at home. Right now, the Gu family is in the midst of a silent war. Our mom and your wife were already at each other’s throats, and now with the addition of a cousin, it’s even more of a headache.”

Gu Wei became anxious, “Then my wife will definitely be wronged!”

“That’s not necessarily true. Why else would Mom call the cousin back if not because she couldn’t defeat your wife? Even though your wife appears gentle and frail on the surface, she’s actually not easy to mess with. Who will lose or win is still up in the air.”

This reassured Gu Wei somewhat.

Meixi escorted her guests home and then returned to her own room before she finally made a call to Gu Wei.

Gu Wei was still worried, “Ah Xi, did my mom give you a hard time?”

Meixi countered, “What do you think?”

“It must have been tough. My mom is really dominant, but she’s not a bad person at heart. Of course, you don’t need to put up with her.”

Meixi stated bluntly, “I didn’t put up with her. I treated her the same way she treated me. I can’t just endure it simply because she’s older.”

“You’re right.”

He understood very well that respect must be mutual.

“Ah Xi, if you dislike living with the Gu Family, then move back.”

“I won’t. I just earned over a million the day before yesterday, thanks to your mom’s hard work. If I move back, I won’t have the chance to make that much money anymore.”

She then relayed the events of the mahjong game to him.

Gu Wei couldn’t help but both cry and laugh; indeed, as his older brother had predicted, his wife was not one to be trifled with.

“Then you must be careful. If anything upsets you, you have to tell me.”

“I will. You also need to be careful out there,” Meixi guessed what Gu Wei was probably up to.

She wouldn’t ask too much, just hoping for his safety.

The two of them exchanged more words of affection with each other.

In the evening, while Meixi was engrossed in a book in her room, Mdm. Zhang came knocking on the door, “Mrs. Junior, the lady asked me to tell you that it’s time to cook.”

Meixi couldn’t help feeling irritated.

She was used to living alone, cooking whenever she wanted to or eating out when she didn’t feel like cooking. But now, at the Gu Family’s home, she had to mind their meal times!

This was unreasonable.

She wouldn’t go.

She laid down to continue reading her book.

Half an hour later, Mdm. Zhang came again, “Mrs. Junior, the lady is getting angry now. Since your cousin has come from a long way, you, as the daughter-in-law, should be the host. Hiding in your room is not proper behavior for a hostess.”

Meixi was annoyed.

She still felt full from lunch and could easily skip dinner, possibly having a snack later if she got hungry at night.

Qiu Yurou and Qiu Wenyin usually cared a lot about maintaining their figures; they probably wouldn’t eat much for dinner anyway.

Fine, if they wanted to eat, she’d go cook.

When she went downstairs, she saw Qiu Yurou and Qiu Wenyin cuddling while watching TV and chatting.

Upon seeing her coming down, Qiu Wenyin remarked, “Cousin-in-law, hurry up and cook dinner, I’m starving.”

Meixi kept her emotions in check and said, “You’ll have to wait a bit; I’ll have it ready soon.”

She walked into the kitchen, opened the fridge, and took out some ingredients.

Entertaining guests, a feast is expected to be generous with fish and meat laid out.

She took out a sea fish and a piece of pork, put them into the microwave for defrosting, and then dumped them into the pot.

Whatever, as long as they got cooked.

After stewing for about fifteen minutes, she tossed in some eggplant and green beans, a few black mushrooms, and even added a handful of noodles.

When it came time to serve, she separated the fish, pork, eggplant, and green beans, and noodles into different dishes, and at first glance, there were four dishes.

This was a trick she learned from some bloggers on a certain app: one pot, four dishes.

Having served the dishes, she brought them out and then went to the living room and called out, “Mom, cousin, dinner’s ready!”
