Chapter 18: The Experienced Driver Leading the Newcomer
Chapter 18: Chapter 18: The Experienced Driver Leading the Newcomer
Su Meixi had never dealt with the police before, and because she was scared, she gripped his hand even tighter.
Gu Wei whispered to comfort her, “Go ahead, don’t be afraid. Just say what you need to say, I’ll be waiting outside for you.”
After Su Meixi was taken away, Gu Wei went out and made a phone call.
He called someone who could handle the situation.
Inside, Su Meixi was recording her statement. At first, she found the policewoman’s tone harsh and strictly professional, but after a short while, the policewoman got called out. When she came back, her face wore a smile, and she treated Su Meixi with great care like an old friend, even encouraging her to talk about the harassment she had experienced before.
Su Meixi asked, “But, those things from before are too far back. Apart from a neighbor of mine, I’m afraid I won’t find any witnesses. Besides, I’m worried about my neighbor getting retaliated against by Li Jiekai.”
The policewoman smiled, “Don’t worry about that. We, the police, will definitely protect the witnesses and ensure they won’t be retaliated against.”
So Su Meixi talked about all the harassment she had suffered in the past, including several instances when she was in middle school and high school.
After she finished, the policewoman closed her notebook and told her, “Alright, what you’ve told us is enough to put Li Jiekai behind bars for ten years.”
“Really?”
The policewoman said, “Li Jiekai does not only harass women; he’s also involved with organized crime. When we compile all the evidence, he’ll be facing at least a ten-year sentence.”
“But we’ll need evidence, right?” Su Meixi was hesitant to believe it.
The policewoman gave her a surprised look and then said, “You don’t need to worry about these things; we will find the evidence.”
Even if the police couldn’t find it, there would be people who would provide solid evidence, none of which would be unjust to Li Jiekai.
…
When they left the police station it was 11 p.m.
Su Meixi’s mood had calmed down, but she was still clutching Gu Wei’s sleeve tightly.
She knew that Gu Wei would not object, after all, he needed her touch to sleep well.
Naturally, Gu Wei did not object, but instead he took her hand.
Since she did not object either, holding hands seemed to become the natural order of things.
At that moment, a police car pulled up in front of them, and the officer driving stuck his head out, “Mr. Gu…”
Gu Wei shot him a look.
The officer seemed to catch on to something and changed his address, “Mr. Gu, you didn’t drive here, did you?”
“My car is parked near Gu Ta Park,” Gu Wei said.
The officer asked, “Do you need me to give you a lift there? Or should I take you straight home?”
Su Meixi was surprised, since when did the police offer such services?
Even if they did, she wouldn’t dare to accept it.
But Gu Wei casually took his seat, and he sat behind the driver, wasn’t that seat exclusive to the boss?
She nervously got into the car and sat next to Gu Wei.
During the ride, no one spoke. After the officer dropped them off, Gu Wei thanked him before pulling Su Meixi out of the car.
The night breeze was strong, and it wasn’t until it brushed against her face that Su Meixi felt less tense. Sitting in the police vehicle, she felt her palms sweat.
Gu Wei, perhaps knowing she was nervous, said, “Actually, whether it’s soldiers or police officers, they all serve the people. Isn’t there a saying? ‘If you have a problem, seek the police.'”
That did seem to make sense.
Gu Wei took out his car keys and pressed them; two beeps came from a Land Rover not too far away.
Gu Wei led Su Meixi over and then said, “I noticed you didn’t drive today, so I went and got the plates done. I also took care of the vehicle registration and everything, and it’s all in your name.”
“Mine?” Su Meixi asked.
Wasn’t this car supposed to be a purchase for himself?
Gu Wei said, “Of course it’s yours. After I go back to the military, I’ll be home less, and since you have to commute every day, it will be more convenient in your name. Besides, it’s all shared property between husband and wife, so it doesn’t make any difference whose name is on it.” @@novelbin@@
Su Meixi felt a warmth in her heart, and then she began to smile.
Seeing her smile made Gu Wei feel joyful, so he smiled too.
His skin was a healthy wheat color, but his teeth were very white, standing out clearly against the night sky, which suddenly reminded Su Meixi of the Darlie toothpaste.
This thought amused her, and she couldn’t help but let out a little snort of laughter.
Seeing Su Meixi laugh so happily, Gu Wei suddenly felt that Gu Cheng really did understand women—women need a sense of security. Although Su Meixi was not materialistic, she was obviously happy to have the car in her name.
Gu Wei wanted to make Su Meixi even happier, so he said, “Ah Xi, when you have time, I am thinking of adding your name to the property deed as well.”
Su Meixi’s smile froze.
Her demeanor changed abruptly, “Why add my name? I don’t care for it.”
For this car, she transferred 200,000 yuan to him, and 30,000 of that was on credit. If the property deed was to be updated, she didn’t have the money to contribute anymore, and she was not used to using credit cards.
Besides, the house was his pre-marital property, and she did not covet it.
Gu Wei was once again confused.
She was so happy when the car was put in her name, even laughing out loud, yet she refused to add her name to the house—why?
Was it because of money?
Seeing it this way, he concluded that he should not disclose his finances to avoid making her feel inferior.
He quickly diverted her attention, “Ah Xi, how about you drive us back tonight?”
“Me?”
“Sooner or later you’ll be driving, so it’s best while I’m here to guide you.”
Su Meixi was eager to try.
She had gotten her driving license but had never driven a car, only touching the steering wheel during driving lessons.
“Well, I’ll give it a try,” Su Meixi said nervously, taking the car keys from Gu Wei’s hand.
A new driver on the road is always nervous.
“Why isn’t the car moving?” Su Meixi, having just adjusted the seat and mirrors, asked.
Gu Wei was a bit exasperated, “You haven’t put the key in yet.”
“…This car is too big, I don’t think I can get it out of the garage,” Su Meixi added.
Gu Wei was resigned, “It’s not that the car is too big, it’s just… you’re right, the car is too big, let me teach you.”
He leaned over and his large hand covered her small one, “First reverse until a certain distance, then turn the steering wheel to drive out.”
Su Meixi complained to him, “Why didn’t you adjust the car’s direction when you arrived? I see other people always park with the car nose facing out.”
Gu Wei: “…”
Was she blaming him now?
Just as he was making a mental note of this, the car suddenly jolted.
Su Meixi quickly let off the gas pedal, “What happened?”
What do you think?
