Chapter 75: Chapter 75 He Can Find Her Quickly
Before dinner, Su Meixi still needed to help the person in charge move the equipment into their storage room and complete the inventory.
The storage room was behind the cafeteria, a very large warehouse filled with military equipment. All the items were neatly placed and spotless, exuding a solemn and sacred aura.
The person in charge instructed her, “Once you’ve finished the inventory, you can come out. Inside, you’re not allowed to walk around or take pictures.”
Su Meixi replied, “I didn’t even bring my cell phone inside.”
That’s because she saw the notice before entering that cell phones were not permitted, so she left hers outside.
The person in charge had to leave temporarily for an emergency, leaving Su Meixi alone in the storage room to check the physical examination project list.
She went over the inventory very carefully and followed the instructions to register it.
Out of nowhere, a gust of wind picked up and the door of the warehouse suddenly slammed shut.
Once the warehouse door closed, the lights automatically went out, plunging the space into darkness. She was frightened out of her wits.
Groping in the dark, she made her way to the door and pounded on it from the inside.
But the iron door was too heavy, her banging did not make much noise, and she couldn’t contact anyone outside without her cell phone.
She began to get nervous.
If this had been a warehouse in any other place, she wouldn’t have been nervous, but this was a military warehouse—what if she was mistaken for a criminal or a spy?
She knocked for a while longer, but still, no one came.
Having no choice, she fumbled around in the dark, trying to find a light switch, but to no avail.
She remembered seeing a flashlight when she was doing the inventory, so she went over and fumbled around for a while.
Fortunately, this time she found it and turned on the flashlight, bringing a glint of light into the darkness.
…
People were already eating in the cafeteria.
There weren’t many soldiers at the border, and the cafeteria was small, so it was easy to see who was inside at a glance.
Gu Wei didn’t see Su Meixi and asked Xiao Ding beside him, “Where’s Dr. Su? Isn’t she coming to eat?”
Xiao Ding couldn’t help but think: Why are you so concerned about her?
However, Xiao Ding was also curious—surely the doctor who had come to assist with the physical examinations would eat with everyone, right?
So, Xiao Ding went to ask the person in charge from the Military District Hospital, “Where is the Dr. Su who came to assist you today?”
“Oh, her?” The person in charge looked around and, not seeing Su Meixi, said, “Maybe she went back? She wanted to leave right after finishing the physicals.”
Xiao Ding reported back to Gu Wei, “She must have left.”
Gu Wei didn’t say a word and silently continued eating his rice.
Before long, he had finished the rice in his bowl.
He walked outside and wandered around for a bit, then saw the van that Su Meixi had driven here.
He walked over and looked inside; there was no one there. Where could she be?
…
Helpless, Su Meixi sat on the cold, hard floor of the warehouse, fiddling with the flashlight in her hand.
When would someone come to the warehouse?
Her van was still outside; if Gu Wei and the others realized she hadn’t left, they should come looking for her.
With this thought, she suddenly felt less worried.
As long as she didn’t touch anything here, she wouldn’t be considered a suspect.
Thus, she leaned against a pillar and closed her eyes to rest.
She had woken up too early in the morning and had been busy all morning; now she felt exhausted, hungry, and sleepy.
She was about to fall into a doze when she suddenly felt a hand on her shoulder.
Startled, she instinctively used the self-defense techniques taught by Gu Wei.
But her fist hadn’t reached the other person before it was grabbed. She tried the next move, and she was forcefully pinned by the newcomer.
Her entire body was pressed against the pillar.
“You…” Who is it?
Looking up, she saw Gu Wei’s face with a hint of a smile.
“Not bad, you haven’t forgotten what I taught you,” said Gu Wei.
Seeing that it was him, Su Meixi immediately breathed a sigh of relief.
Now she wouldn’t be suspected.
But he was still firmly pinning her down, and she felt his solid chest again.
“Gu Wei, let go of me.”
However, her hands were lifted up and pinned by him, “This is a military key point. Do you know the consequences of entering without authorization?”
“Isn’t it more like I was brought in?” Su Meixi said, “I… I was brought in by the person in charge here to help. If there are consequences for this as well, then I just won’t come in the future. Besides, it’s this door that’s too heavy. It closes as soon as you say so, without checking if there’s anyone inside. That’s inhumane. And to think you’re some sort of prodigy, able to develop new life detection technology. Why can’t you improve this door? Wait until everyone has exited before closing it.”
She ranted in agitation, spittle spraying on his face.
The corners of Gu Wei’s mouth lifted unintentionally.
But he still didn’t let go of her.
Her hands were restrained, and her waist pressed close against him; the position was too suggestive, like a scene from a cheap movie.
“What? Can’t get enough of sticking to me, or are you planning to take me in for interrogation? Then hurry up and interrogate. I still have to get back to work,” Su Meixi’s stomach growled audibly.
Gu Wei finally let her go.
He walked over and pressed a switch, and the iron door automatically opened.
Turns out the switch was on the left side, while Su Meixi had been fumbling on the right side.
After stepping out, Gu Wei asked her, “There’s still food in the canteen. Do you want to go eat?”
“Of course,” Su Meixi replied. “I’m here to work today; you can’t expect me to pay for my own food after that.”
Without eating soon, she would have no energy left to drive.
Gu Wei led her to the canteen.
Xiao Ding and the others were surprised when they saw her.
So Su Meixi hadn’t left, and the boss had found her so quickly!
Gu Wei had Su Meixi sit at one of the tables, then went to the service window to swipe his card for a whole pile of dishes before bringing them to Su Meixi.
Su Meixi didn’t stand on ceremony, picking up her chopsticks and wolfing down the food.
Gu Wei watched her eat in silence.
The nearby Xiao Ding and Da Liu were astonished.
When had the boss ever been so caring toward a woman? Even watching her eat.
Xiao Ding was especially anxious. The boss already had a wife; he wouldn’t really be messing up, would he? Should he remind him? Or not?
If he reminded him, he had no evidence of any wrongdoing; if he didn’t, he worried the boss might lose control.
After some thought, he decided to drop it.
…
After finishing her meal, Su Meixi left.@@novelbin@@
She drove a van.
After driving a while, she saw a jeep following her from the rearview mirror.
When she sped up, it sped up; when she slowed down, it slowed down, maintaining a distance of two hundred meters.
Was the driver Gu Wei?
Who else could it be?
Was he trying to protect her?
There were several moments when Su Meixi wanted to stop and ask him what he meant.
Was he unable to let go, or was he deliberately teasing?
As she neared the town, the jeep didn’t follow.
Thinking back to how he had pressed against her in the warehouse, and how he had watched her eat across the table, her heart started racing like a deer again.
…
Half a month passed.
Su Meixi was busy as ever.
Sometimes she saw patients at the health clinic, sometimes she made distant house calls, and other times she participated in various free clinics.
During this time, she hadn’t seen Gu Wei.
And so, her agitated heart gradually calmed down.
That day, Su Meixi had to visit a village 20 kilometers away to treat a child who had ingested detergent and might need a stomach wash.
She grabbed her things and rushed out in the van.
This village only had a dozen or so households, scattered halfway up the mountain. She had to ask around to know where to find the child from the An family.
At the entrance of the village, there were two young men who looked like thugs. The moment they saw her, their eyes narrowed into a leering smile.
What do you think?
