Chapter 43: Chapter 43: Is that…really okay?
Because in her previous life, Lu Zhaozhao had indeed seen Xia Wenyan.
But not in real life, but… in the news.
The incident of a popular top-tier celebrity suddenly dying from a drug overdose had dominated the entertainment news that year.
There were many conspiracy theories about Xia Wenyan, but in the end, all came to nothing.
Lu Zhaozhao looked at the bright-eyed youth in front of her, finding it impossible to associate him with the words “drugs.”
Wen Qingyu saw that Lu Zhaozhao’s gaze kept falling on Xia Wenyan and explained to her with a light laugh, “Zhaozhao, this is your fourth brother, Xia Wenyan. He is currently…”
She paused slightly, “Um, unemployed.”
“Uh…”
“Mom!” Xia Wenyan exploded as soon as he heard Wen Qingyu’s explanation, “I’m a trainee, about to debut soon, and I’m already quite popular now, okay?”
Xia Nie glanced at Xia Wenyan and said dismissively, “We’ll talk when you actually debut. If your mom says you’re unemployed now, then you are.”
Xia Wenyan: “…”
Pleased with Xia Wenyan falling silent, Xia Nie then put a chicken wing in Lu Zhaozhao’s bowl, “Zhaozhao, eat up, don’t mind him.”
“Oh, okay.” Lu Zhaozhao nodded her head obediently, sitting quietly and eating her meal.
She had been a bit nervous about meeting the Xia Family’s four brothers, but after meeting them, her mind was even more in chaos.
She hadn’t expected Xia Wenjue and Xia Wenmo to be the two people she’d seen at the auction that day.
And she’d never imagined that her fourth brother would be someone who could make headlines in both social and entertainment news in the future.
Her gaze inadvertently swept over Xia Nie and Wen Qingyu. If something were really to happen to Xia Wenyan, they would surely be heartbroken, wouldn’t they?
Lu Zhaozhao thought so, frowning inadvertently, surprised that Xia Wenyan, so young, had chosen the wrong path upon entering the industry.
Seeing his defiant attitude from earlier, it was no wonder he made such a stir in the entertainment world.
“How long have I been away from home? You’ve added a sister without a second thought for Wen Jin’s feelings. She… uh…”
Xia Wenyan hadn’t finished speaking when his mouth was suddenly covered by Xia Wenjue and Xia Wenqing, both at once.
Xia Wenjue narrowed his eyes and forced a smile as he looked at Lu Zhaozhao, “Lao Si just got back from the training base; his head isn’t very clear. I’ll take him back to his room to rest properly.”
“Yes, how could our future star trainee eat so many carbs? He needs to train properly!” Xia Wenqing couldn’t help but add with a noticeably “kind” look in his eyes.
“I—!” Xia Wenyan wanted to struggle, but was quickly subdued by the two again.
Then, Lu Zhaozhao watched as Xia Wenjue and Xia Wenqing stood up together and dragged Xia Wenyan away.
Lu Zhaozhao was somewhat bewildered watching the actions of the eldest and second Xia brothers.
She had never had siblings in her previous life and didn’t know how to interact with them.
So she felt somewhat panicked in these circumstances.
Xia Wenmo seated beside her gently patted Lu Zhaozhao’s hand and smiled reassuringly, “Don’t worry, Lao Si is tough; he’s always been a handful since he was little, and he never knows when to shut up. Getting scolded is nothing new for him.”@@novelbin@@
“!!!”
She felt Xia Wenmo’s attempt at consolation did nothing to soothe her!
Lu Zhaozhao silently turned to Wen Qingyu beside her and asked tentatively, “Is that… really okay?”
Wen Qingyu nodded slightly, forcing a smile that was less skin-deep than heartfelt, “Yeah, nothing’s wrong, just beating up Lao Si on a rainy day, since there’s nothing better to do.”
It seemed Wen Qingyu was also quite angry.
At the same time.
Xia Wenyan, who had been dragged into the room by Xia Wenjue and Xia Wenqing, looked visibly displeased.
“What’s gotten into all of you? Even if you dislike Wen Jin, the change in attitude shouldn’t be this abrupt, should it?”
As he spoke, he looked up at Xia Wenjue, “It’s one thing for the second and third brothers, but why aren’t you, big brother, standing up for Wen Jin?”
Xia Wenjue let out a soft sigh, patiently attempting to explain, “You weren’t here earlier, there are some things you’re not aware of, Xia Wenjin…”
“I know! Wen Jin already told me, she and Lu Zhaozhao were switched at birth, so our family has recognized Lu Zhaozhao.” Xia Wenyan blurted out before Xia Wenjue could finish.
Xia Wenjue shot Xia Wenyan a look, a foreboding feeling creeping in.
No wonder Xia Wenyan had come in with such hostility towards Lu Zhaozhao, whom he had never met — it was because of Xia Wenjin.
Xia Wenjue suddenly remembered the incident over the weekend, when Xia Wenjin came home and tried to smear Lu Zhaozhao. Likely, she hadn’t spared any details with Xia Wenyan either.
Xia Wenqing glanced at Xia Wenyan and spoke coldly, “Since you know that Zhaozhao is our sister, you should treat her well and drop the young master act in front of her.”
Xia Wenyan raised an eyebrow, his disbelief apparent as he looked at Xia Wenqing, “Second brother, am I hearing you right? You’re telling me to treat Lu Zhaozhao nicely?”
Back in the States, his second brother was a law mogul who dealt with both black and white, seeming well-mannered and mild on the surface but actually indifferent to others’ woes.
Utterly aloof.
He would normally ignore Xia Wenjin just because he found her bothersome.
Let alone looking out for someone else.
Now that he thought about it, his typically sharp-tongued third brother had, earlier, seemed almost too gentle toward Lu Zhaozhao.
This Lu Zhaozhao must be toxic, right?
Xia Wenqing’s gaze swept indifferently over Xia Wenyan’s face, already guessing what was going through his vacant head.
He sighed out of helplessness, “You’d better not believe Xia Wenjin’s words, or you’ll surely regret it later.”
Of all their siblings, Xia Wenyan was the most naïve.
It was bad enough that he was always taking the rap for Xia Wenjin, being strung along and deceived by her.
Previously, since he had thought Xia Wenjin was his sister, he had let them have their way, smoothing things over behind the scenes as long as the problems weren’t too severe.
But now… since she’s not his sister, he no longer had the obligation to clean up after her.
Xia Wenjue, meanwhile, patted Xia Wenyan on the shoulder and said, “When Xia Wenjin found out that the Lu Family was her birth parents, she didn’t even look back before heading to the Lu Family. If you don’t believe me, I have a video here you can watch.”
“No need,” Xia Wenyan refused outright, “Wen Jin has already told me about this, she didn’t go to the Lu Family by choice, plus Lu Zhaozhao has been bullying her!”
Xia Wenjue and Xia Wenqing exchanged a look, both almost immediately giving Xia Wenyan a look that said they thought he was a fool.
They really shouldn’t have protected this brat too well; now he was sold out and even helped the seller count the money!
“You…” Xia Wenjue wanted to say something more but was stopped by Xia Wenqing raising his hand to silence him…
What do you think?
