Chapter 4 – You go pick up the airplane
"It was just a dream."
This was Jiang Bei's automatic annotation to the content he had just experienced when he woke up, probably a reaction any sane person would have at this moment.
However, he quickly noticed a subtle new interface that was absolutely not present before, appearing on the retina screen in front of him.
"Treasury value: 899."
This was a new concept he had just accepted in that dream, used to reflect a person's value in the Present World, determining whether he could enter the so-called "Ideal State" heaven after death, or reincarnate into a spotted hyena.
Jiang Bei felt like he could hear the dying struggle of his shattered worldview.
A voice deep in his heart told him that everything was real.
"I'm so hungry! Hungry! Hungry! I want to eat!" The girl on the side was clamoring.
Jiang Bei's attention returned to her. There were too many troubling issues at the moment, even the question about why a beautiful girl appeared out of nowhere in his house didn't make it to the top of the list.
"Wait a minute, is that my shirt?"
Jiang Bei noticed the oversized white shirt the girl was wearing. The girl, with her unmatched figure, wore a quirky pair of baggy pants, revealing two unbeatable long white legs. The loose shirt draped over her, with only the chest area noticeably rising.
"Did you rummage through my closet?" Jiang Bei took a deep breath, "Never mind, that's not important... Who are you? Where are you from? Do you have any idea what's going on?"
"Um... I do. But if I tell you, you probably won't believe me." the girl said.
"Perhaps not." Jiang Bei thought of the bizarre experience he had just had and the glaring treasury value of 899 on the screen, "I don't think anything can surprise me anymore."
Without another word, the girl's eyes turned bright red, and two hot beams shot out, scorching two charred marks on the freshly painted white wall like a hot knife through butter.
Jiang Bei: (╯°Д°)╯︵┻━┻
Did she just shoot lasers? Did she just shoot lasers from her eyes!?
The red light in the girl's eyes died down. She looked at Jiang Bei with an innocent face as if to say, "See, I told you so."
She tilted her head, curiously examining Jiang Bei's constipated-like grimace, "What's wrong?"
There was even a hint of concern in her voice.
"Nothing."
Jiang Bei glanced at the charred marks on the wall, thought about his landlady's explosive temper, and couldn't help but look mournful.
"I was just thinking about something sad."
Of course, that's not important now.
"Okay, you can shoot lasers from your eyes... It doesn't really explain my problem. Can you tell me what exactly is happening to me? I'm feeling a bit slow right now..."
"Oh, that's normal." The girl waved her hand to assure him, "Don't worry, it's just because you died."

Jiang Bei sighed deeply. Oh, that makes sense, I was wondering...
"..."
"Wait, what did you just say!!?"
Jiang Bei, who felt a little stiff in the head, started to doubt his own hearing.
"You died." The girl blinked her big eyes innocently, "Huh? Didn't I just say that?"
Jiang Bei: (゚⊿゚)ツ
However, the girl didn't seem to have any intention of continuing the conversation, instead, she was unhappily clutching her stomach, "I'm starving! I want food! Food!"
It seemed she wouldn't continue unless fed.
Jiang Bei: "......"
"What? You don't want to?" The girl frowned.
"No, it's just that my fridge is empty right now, and I don't have any snacks..."
"You don't even have anything to eat?"
The girl seemed deeply shocked. Her steel-melting eyes were instantly filled with great sorrow and resentment.
"Ah! What a loss! I went all the way down to drag your half-dead body back here, and you don't even have anything to eat! What a rip-off!!!"
Saying that, she collapsed into the couch, her perfectly proportioned long legs kicking in the air.
The female Superman, who had shattered Jiang Bei's worldview just a second ago, suddenly threw a tantrum like this, which left him a bit dumbfounded.
And she said it took a lot of effort to drag him back...
Jiang Bei suddenly remembered the end of the "dream." The angelic figure that dived into hell, bathed in glory, grabbed him, and flew him back to the Present World.
Through the blurred filter of that memory, the face seemed to become clearer and clearer, until it overlapped with the lackadaisical female Superman, who was kicking her legs around on the sofa.
"Wow, it's you!?" Jiang Bei was astounded.
The girl ignored him, continuing to shout for food.
"Well... Wait a moment, I'll go get something."
So, with a belly full of questions, Jiang Bei went downstairs to the vending machine in the community and bought a pack of Oreo cookies and a small bag of chips.
The young girl, holding the cookies, was immediately quiet. She crisply bit into an Oreo, her eyes squinting into crescents: "Delicious! This is delicious! It wasn't in vain that I saved your life!"
Juxtaposing his own life with a bag of Oreos...
The Superman girl seemed to brighten up, casually explaining the situation as she ate.
As the saying goes, unexpected fortune and misfortune befall everyone. When bad luck comes, one can be bitten by a dog on the street, hit by a car while walking, get a lousy draw from a gacha game, or even choke on water. However, Jiang Bei's case was severe; a lunatic had attacked him in the middle of the night, bypassing ICU and proceeding directly to a coffin carried by pallbearers.
But perhaps due to the conservation of character or the notion of extremes leading to their opposites, when Jiang Bei should have died, a benefactor fell from the sky. An Extraordinary Superman girl descended, dredging him from death to resurrection.@@novelbin@@
"The Threshold, huh... it's a place like a recycling station of the Present World. The starting and ending point of every reincarnation in the Present World, bordering the Ideal State...
...Oh right, do you know about the Ideal State?"
Jiang Bei shook his head.
"Oh right, you don't... then think of the Threshold as something like the underworld. Basically, you were on your way to check in there, and I pulled you back." The girl's mouth was full of black and white cookie crumbs as she spoke.
"So you saved my life?"
The girl tilted her head to think: "emmm, that's not quite accurate. Because I saved your body, but not your life. You are still technically dead."
Jiang Bei was a bit stunned. He looked down at his own body, finding it hard to believe.
"Is that so? But I don't feel like I'm dead..."
"Of course, that's because I shared my life and abilities with you. We're now one heart and body." The girl said, as if it were a matter of course, "Don't think that you can jump around alive now. Once I leave, you will immediately return to being a corpse, the kind that is deader than dead."
Jiang Bei inhaled sharply. Damn it, sharing life, is this something like a hotspot?
Everything sounded ridiculous, a powerful challenge to his worldview fostered by nine years of compulsory education. But the watch from the dream on his wrist and the charred cut on the wall were such powerful evidence.
"...Why did you save me?" he couldn't help but ask.
If she just happened to pass by and it was a no-brainer, that would be fine; just like a young girl with overflowing love helping a stray cat or dog on the side of the road. But the phrase "sharing life" obviously exceeded this scope. After all, you might feed a hungry stray cat on the side of the road, but you definitely wouldn't want to merge with it.
There's a saying, 'no labor, no reward.' Years of dealing with unscrupulous game companies taught Jiang Bei that "what's free is the most expensive." A powerful existence with Extraordinary abilities willing to share her life with him must come at a high cost.
But for the life of him, Jiang Bei couldn't think of anything valuable he had to offer. He was already out of luck, and now even that was gone. What else could he give? Offer himself?
Looking at the female Superman's face, figure, and long legs, it seemed like he might be the one benefiting.
"Emmm, there's no special reason. I just happened to be here and saw you dying, then I discovered that I seemed to be bound to you, so that's that." The girl said, opening a bag of chips and biting into it with a crisp crunch, her eyes squinting into crescents again, "This is delicious too! I definitely saved the right person!"
Jiang Bei chose to ignore the debate on whether his life was worth a bag of Oreos or chips and continued to question: "What does 'bound' mean?"
"It means that I can't freely move in your 'Present World'. If I stay here too long, there will be a rejection reaction. So I bind to a host to help me adapt and merge into the environment of the Present World.
When I came here, I just happened to see you about to die. You needed me, and I needed you, so that's it."
This time, Jiang Bei seemed to understand. An M78 civil servant, right?
"So... you're an alien?" Jiang Bei asked cautiously.
"No." The Superman Girl shook her head but then reconsidered, "Well, you can understand it that way if you want. From the perspective of your Present World, I suppose I am something like an alien."
"So why me?" Jiang Bei asked.
As far as he knew, if the standard for an M78 civil servant to pick a host was either causing a traffic accident or being moved by the host's courage to risk their life to save a puppy, he didn't seem to meet either condition. Apart from being somewhat handsome, as per the local aunties, he seemed to have no special talent.
The Superman Girl pondered for a moment.
"......I don't know."
"You don't know?" Jiang Bei looked confused.
"Yeah, as soon as I arrived, I felt like I was bound to you. I'm not sure why."
She shook her head, continuing to munch.
Jiang Bei carefully studied this dangerous girl, capable of emitting laser beams from her eyes, somehow feeling that she didn't seem very intelligent.
"So what are you here to do?"
She paused her eating, her expression freezing for a moment.
After a brief pause, she looked up: "I forgot."
Jiang Bei: "?"
"I remember there was something important, but something happened on the way here, and I forgot... Oh well, it doesn't seem important. I'll remember it when needed, right?"
The girl gave up thinking and cheerfully began eating chips again.
Jiang Bei: "......"
Definitely not a very bright one.
He suddenly started to wonder if her mind might have something to do with the lofty peaks underneath that ill-fitting shirt. After all, it's not often one sees such a generous figure. Wouldn't be surprised if she said she sacrificed her brains for it.
"Oh right, I need to remind you of something. Although I've shared my life with you, I can't always do this." She said, "After all, you're technically dead.
I have some special abilities that can help you maintain normalcy, but not for long. Given your current state, this situation can probably last... two weeks? A month? Something like that, I can't say for sure."
Jiang Bei felt weak in his knees: "So what happens when the time comes?"
"You'll officially die, return to the Threshold. And I'll just have to find a new host."
Jiang Bei's vision blacked out again.
He thought he had escaped from death, but it turns out he's just on borrowed time. His death was only postponed.
The girl tilted her head and looked at him for a moment.
"Do you want to keep living?"
"I do, of course, I do. I want to live terribly." Jiang Bei replied despondently, "I've never realized it before. I used to think life was boring, tedious, and exhausting.
But now I know that only when you're about to die do you realize that even this mundane life is so worth cherishing... but it's too late now, isn't it?"
"Well... not necessarily." The girl said, "When I said it could only last two weeks to a month, it's because your Treasury value is just this high. The display of this power is affected by the Treasury value.
However, if you can increase your Treasury value, this time limit can be extended. Even if your Treasury value is high enough, it's not impossible to come back to life completely."
"Most people's Treasury value is random at birth, and every action and choice they make in their lives may affect its increase or decrease." The girl said, "But generally, it's challenging to significantly increase or decrease the Treasury value in a short period of time.
Because it's a long-term process, which relies on cumulative efforts. It's usually tough to see any changes within a month."
Jiang Bei suddenly felt that life is indeed full of ups and downs, his heart, which had just kindled a glimmer of hope, sank to the bottom again.
"Of course, that's under normal circumstances. With me here, things are different." She pondered for a moment, then suddenly asked, "Do you trust me?"
"......Do I have a choice?" Jiang Bei felt helpless.
Logically speaking, he had just met this odd girl, and it would be impossible for him to trust her blindly. However, reality sometimes doesn't leave people with many options.
"I suppose you're right." The girl nodded, "Don't be disheartened, the problem isn't that big. As long as you...um...explaining it would be a bit complicated, it might be better to have you practice directly."
"How should I practice?" Jiang Bei felt inexplicably nervous.
"Starting from now, in twelve minutes, a commercial airliner will malfunction in mid-air and will crash in this direction." The girl said seriously, "You go and catch it."
Jiang Bei: "???"
What do you think?
