Chapter 7 – Universal gas
The buzzing of a mobile phone on the table interrupted Tang Wen's peaceful dream, followed by the melody of "I didn't know you ten years ago" (Ten Years, the song from Eason, Youtube link) echoing throughout the room.
Yawning, Tang Wen stretched his hand out from the warm quilt to grab the mobile phone on the bedside table. He could feel his wife turning over disdainfully beside him, even pulling the quilt a little towards her side.

Suppressing another yawn, Tang Wen answered the phone: "Who is this?"
"It's me, Li Xiao'an, sir."
Li Xiao'an was a subordinate newly assigned to him by the organization. He was capable and efficient, a young man Tang Wen both liked and had high hopes for, though he was somewhat inexperienced.
It was clear that it wasn't time for work yet, so a call at this time must be urgent. Tang Wen was instantly alert, almost jumping out of bed, "Xiao'an? What's going on?"
"Well, sir. Earlier this morning, a plane passing over Kantu City had an engine failure, the wing broke..."
"Is that it?"
Tang Wen's eyes almost instantly closed again, yawning and lying back down, even casually pulling back some of the quilt that had been dragged to his wife's side.
"It is unfortunate, but plane crashes are not our responsibility. If you're too free, complete that form for me today instead of worrying about other department's business..."
"No, sir, the thing is, the plane did not crash," Li Xiao'an said, "it was caught by someone."
"What!?"
Tang Wen sprung back up as if he had a spring attached, while pulling the blanket in his hand. His wife mumbled beside him, "What are you doing, sit-ups?"
"What do you mean?" Tang Wen ignored the sarcasm from beside his pillow and asked.
"Literally, sir. According to the pilot and co-pilot, they said that someone flew thousands of meters into the air to catch the plane when it was falling and then placed it safely on an open ground outside Kantu City.
The first squad that arrived at the scene also reported similar findings. Many signs indicate that an Extraordinary Being flew over to catch it..."
"Hold on, what do you mean by 'caught'?" Tang Wen felt he didn't understand, "He flew in to rescue the passengers? Or did he use some mechanical power to take control of the plane? Or is it a wind element control type ability assisting in a gliding emergency landing? Or say..."
"No, sir. I mean 'caught', with his hands, like a weightlifter."
Tang Wen:???
Are you messing with me?
About ten minutes later, Tang Wen arrived at the scene. The site had been cordoned off by then, and the crew and passengers had been taken to the emergency center. Personnel from various departments were busy at the scene.
"Are you sure it was an Extraordinary Being?" Tang Wen asked his subordinate as soon as he arrived at the scene.
"Very likely, sir. We did find traces on the plane's body that match the pilot's description," Li Xiao'an paused, "And we still haven't found the Extraordinary Being who killed containment object N-2814..."
Tang Wen fell silent.
He knew what Li Xiao'an meant. Extraordinary Beings of sequence A and above aren't as common as cabbages, so the odds of two such powerful wild Extraordinary Beings appearing in just two days are as low as getting a free wife when buying a wife's cake.
In comparison, they preferred to believe that both incidents were the work of the same Extraordinary Being.
"So this time, it's a strength-enhanced Extraordinary Being...and then a flight ability?" Tang Wen rubbed his temples.
According to their conventional understanding, there are limits to a human being. The strength-enhanced type of Extraordinary Beings would be limited by the human body, and there is a limit no matter how strong they become. They haven't even seen a sequence B strength-type Extraordinary Being, let alone one of sequence A or above.
So they had no concept of how strong a strength-type Extraordinary Being of such a high sequence would be.
Maybe, possibly, it's quite normal to lift a plane?
Bullshit!
This has already transcended human understanding, hasn't it? Even Extraordinary Beings should make some sense, right?
"No matter what, we need to find him immediately," Tang Wen said.
The control of Extraordinary Beings was inherently a part of their "Sky Eye" duties. Being Extraordinary was a personal power, more dangerous than firearms. Proper control was necessary; otherwise, the consequences could be unthinkable if someone with such extraordinary power lost control.
"You mentioned there were witnesses. Did anyone see his face?" Tang Wen asked.
"The pilot seems to have seen it, but he couldn't accurately describe it when we asked him," Li Xiao'an replied, "We will arrange for a sketch, but the chances of getting an accurate portrait are slim."
"Hmm," Tang Wen grunted, frowning at the wreckage thoughtfully.
"And then there's the follow-up question," Li Xiao'an carefully asked, "There must be an official statement about the accident today. So, boss, what do you think..."
"Just handle it like before, you arrange it," Tang Wen waved dismissively, still pondering, "Gas, coal gas, natural gas, just choose one."
"Huh?" Li Xiao'an blinked, "But this is a plane, boss. Gas can't do much, can it?"
Tang Wen: "......"
......
At the same time, the main character who was the focus of the Sky Eye and the survivors of the air disaster, the Superman whose strength was extraordinary, was at his apartment holding his aching lower back, his face pale.
The girl sitting on the sofa responded to his plea for help with a matter-of-fact expression.
"I did tell you that you're not fully compatible with my power given your current condition, which is why you need that battlesuit to help you switch between activation and sealing states.
This is what happens if you maintain the activated state for too long."
"You should've said that earlier..." Jiang Bei weakly protested, casting a resentful glance at the beautiful girl on the sofa.
Indeed, power always comes with a price. He didn't expect his turn to deal with such a troublesome little devil.
After catching the plane and reveling in the exhilarating freedom that this incredible strength gave him, Jiang Bei had taken a few more laps in the sky to relish the experience. But now, he was beginning to regret it.
Fuck, pleasure for a moment, kidney on fire. He felt as exhausted as after a night of extreme physical activity, his body drained, his legs shaky as he walked.
"Calm down, calm down. As your physical condition gradually improves, your stamina will also increase, and then you won't feel weak. And soon you'll have your own Extraordinary...well...let's leave that for later." The girl comforted him, "Apart from that, have you noticed the change in your Treasury value?"
Only then did Jiang Bei notice the Treasury value display on the screen.
The original value of 899 had now become 921.
"It increased!"
His eyes lit up, and he cast an inquiring glance at the girl.
"Why is that?"
"Well, my ability is a bit special. It just happens to be the type that can temporarily increase the Treasury value."
Jiang Bei remembered that the people at the Threshold had explained that the Treasury value was a reflection of a person's value in the Present World. The description was still a bit abstract, but combined with what had just happened, he began to make connections.
"Could it be...by saving people?" he asked tentatively, "Because I just saved the people on that plane, so my value in the Present World increased?"
A quick look at "pawread dot com" will leave you more fulfilled.
"Indirectly, maybe, but that's not exactly how my power works...not entirely," the girl said as she crossed her legs, "If I had to put it into words, the force that drives this power...it should be what you guys call 'Hope'. "
What do you think?
