Chapter 120: Chapter 120: Business Comes Knocking
Seeing this, Old Niu became even more curious, “You must be looking for someone, right?”
“It’s a bit of business, old brother, don’t ask too much, just tell us the way to go.”
Fortunately, Old Niu wasn’t the type to dig too deeply. “Central China Farm is in a depression behind Nanwan Village, the road there is not easy to travel, especially after this snowfall, it’s even more difficult. If you’re heading there, it’s best to wait until the snow has cleared before you go.”
After saying this, he kindly added another word of advice, “Changhai, that’s really not a good place, try not to go there if you can avoid it.”
This sentence hit Yu Cheng like a bucket of cold water, instantly cooling his excited emotions.
Even the villagers, living in poverty, say it’s not a good place, one can imagine how hard his uncle’s life had been these past years.
“Alright, I got it, thanks a lot,” Jiang Changhai patted Old Niu’s shoulder, “We were just asking, today we’re mainly here to pick up the cotton.”
After retrieving the cotton stored at Old Niu’s, Jiang Changhai and Yu Cheng each carried two large bags of cotton, heading for the nearest production brigade.
Halfway there, Jiang Changhai stopped to catch his breath, carrying all that cotton, walking so far in one go, it had really exhausted him.
Now he was very thankful that he had brought Yu Cheng along.
Looking at Yu Cheng who didn’t seem to be panting or flushed, he asked, “Yu Cheng, aren’t you tired? Put down the stuff, take a break.”
“I’m fine. Uncle Jiang, if you’re tired, just give me the stuff, I’ll carry it.” As Yu Cheng spoke, he picked up the two large bags of cotton he had set on the ground.
Seeing him carry a hundred pounds of cotton with such an ease on his face, Jiang Changhai watched for a while before lightly punching him on the shoulder and praised, “Not bad, you’re pretty strong, kid.”
“It’s nothing.” Yu Cheng didn’t say he often did frog jumps and sprints with a hundred-pound load.
And the more Jiang Changhai looked at him, the more he liked him, strong and willing to work hard with a very steady personality; his family had raised him right!
Seeing that he didn’t look any happier even after being praised, Jiang Changhai consoled, “Yu Cheng, don’t worry, that farm where your uncle is, it’s too far from here, a round trip would take almost a whole day. Today we’ll sell off the cotton, and first thing tomorrow morning, I’ll take you there.”
“Thank you, Uncle Jiang.” Yu Cheng forced a smile; he really couldn’t muster a genuine one at the moment.
At the first production brigade, a woman sweeping snow outside spotted the bit of cotton peeking out from the men’s bags and quickly called out to them.
“Hey, lads, hold up, is that cotton you’re carrying?”
“Yes, big sister, are you looking to buy some? I don’t need tickets for my cotton.” Jiang Changhai saw a business opportunity walking up to him and quickly jogged over to pull in the sale.
On hearing that no coupons were needed, the woman’s eyes lit up, eagerly asking, “No coupons needed? How much per pound?”
Jiang Changhai gestured a ‘nine’ with his hand and whispered, “0.9 yuan, big sister, the Supply and Marketing Cooperative is selling cotton with coupons for 0.6 yuan a pound. Mine might be a bit more expensive, but I don’t need coupons, you can buy as much as you want, and all my cotton is new, soft, light, and warm—you’ll see when you check.”
As he spoke, Jiang Changhai took out a handful of cotton from the bag for the woman to see.
The woman felt the cotton and found it really nice.
Even though it was a bit pricey, the fact that it didn’t require any coupons was a plus; their family truly couldn’t get their hands on cotton coupons.
What do you think?
