Chapter 26: Days of Frustration
Chapter 26: Chapter 26: Days of Frustration
Pityingly, she couldn’t vent her bitterness and frustrations openly, because when it came to thick-skinned arguing and throwing tantrums, she couldn’t outdo Eldest.
Life was unbearably stifling!
The other girls merely swallowed their saliva, full of envy. @@novelbin@@
It had been a long time since they had tasted egg custard, yet San Ya was able to devour a whole twenty eggs.
If they fell into water, they too could eat that much, no, just two eggs would be enough.
Jiang Mianmian felt their burning stares for a moment, a twinge of guilt in her heart, and then she chewed faster.
Sorry, she was too insignificant to help others at the moment, and could only look after herself.
“Honey, slow down, don’t choke,” Jiang Changhai saw this and hurriedly passed her a bowl of vegetable soup.
He knew his nieces were staring hungrily, but that was none of his business!
If their own parents didn’t care about them, he, being just an uncle, definitely wouldn’t bother, especially since he was hardly managing to provide for one daughter.
The old lady also valued the eggs, and said sternly, “Eldest, since San Ya is going to school, it will cost us an extra two dollars a year. You need to work harder and earn more work points.”
As for Eldest’s wife who had asthma, there were no expectations placed on her.
Any illness she had would probably cost more money than it was worth!
“Sure,” Jiang Changhai surprisingly agreed this time.
Which made the old lady somewhat uneasy, “Don’t try to fool me. If you do, San Ya won’t be able to go to school next year.”
Jiang Changhai immediately cried out in protest, “Mom, do I seem like someone whose words don’t count?”
The old lady thought about it, and although her eldest son was a good-for-nothing scoundrel, he indeed had never lied or deceived her. Still, she felt uneasy.
Then she heard Jiang Changhai say, “Mianmian will start school in the autumn, so I’m also going to wait until then to begin working more.”
The old lady felt much more reassured. That sounded more like something Eldest would say.
So she nodded, deciding to trust him for now, “Alright, when the time comes, you’ll join your father and the others.”
But everyone else, including Jiang Mianmian, didn’t quite believe it.
After finishing the meal and returning to their room, she asked, “Dad, when I start school, will you really work more?”
She felt that making her dad work more was even less reliable than her getting into college.
Seeing her wide-eyed and cute expression, Jiang Changhai teasingly responded, “Yes.”
After all, he had never specified how many days he would work more; even one day would count.
Jiang Mianmian was stunned. Her dad was actually serious?!
How could that be possible?!
Seeing her incredulous expression, Su Wanyu spoke softly, “Your dad is working so hard just for you. You must study hard, get into high school, and make a lot of money to repay us.”
“Yes, I definitely will!” Jiang Mianmian was moved instantly; she knew how lazy her dad was.
If it weren’t for her and her mom’s greedy appetites, her dad would rather sleep on an empty stomach than work to eat his fill.
Seizing the moment, the system chimed in, “Host, since your father is willing to work more for you, you should also strive to study hard to repay your parents. So, how about we officially start the study prodigy mode tonight?”
Jiang Mianmian sniffled, “Thanks, no thanks.”
Study prodigy mode sounded terrifying. Of course, she would delay it as long as possible; she still wanted to enjoy two more months of lazy life.
Unfortunately, fate had other plans. That very evening, the village chief came to their door with his daughter and a first-grade textbook.
What do you think?
