Chapter 71: Chapter 71 I’ll Listen to You
So, to avoid an empty stomach, Jiang Changhai still decided to put in a few hard days of work. Once the rush to harvest the crops was over, he planned to take all the rest he had missed during this period.
During these days, Jiang Changhai kept to his work schedule punctually, although he still managed to sneak in some moments of laziness. However, he was much improved compared to before.
Even Zhang Guihua, who had always been critical of her eldest son, couldn’t help but smile at him these past few days. Jiang Changhai had never received such treatment before, and it almost made him giddy with joy.
At night, lying on the kang exhausted, Jiang Changhai let out a long sigh and complained to his wife, “Ah, wife, these past few days have worn me out. I’ve finally finished the harvest. I’ll have to go a bit later tomorrow; I need to sleep in and rest at home for a while.”
“Dad, I’m tired too, I’ve gotten a tan in just these two days,” Su Wanyu waved her still fair hands in front of Jiang Changhai, teasing him.
“Ah, that’s true, my wife has gotten a tan. Then you shouldn’t go tomorrow, let’s both take a good rest,” said Jiang Changhai, squeezing Su Wanyu’s hand and giving it a kiss with a chuckle.
“Dad, I’ll listen to you,” Su Wanyu smiled coyly.
Jiang Mianmian sat at the table miserably, listening to her parents being all lovey-dovey. She turned to look at her parents lying on the kang, hopeful as she asked, “Dad, I’ve also gotten a tan from going to school these past few days. Can I stay home and rest for a day tomorrow?” @@novelbin@@
“Is that so, my daughter? Come, let daddy see, where did you get a tan?” asked Jiang Changhai promptly, sitting up and looking at Jiang Mianmian with concern.
Jiang Mianmian randomly pointed to her face, batting her big eyes, hopeful as she looked at Jiang Changhai.
Su Wanyu stood up, tapped Jiang Mianmian’s forehead and looked at her with a face that said I know what you’re up to, “My daughter, you’re preparing for high school, you can’t afford to slack off two days for every three days of work.”
“Right, your mother’s right.”
Jiang Mianmian, seeing Jiang Changhai firmly on Su Wanyu’s side, turned expressionlessly and continued her homework.
The next day, when it was time to start work, Zhang Guihua saw that Jiang Changhai had just sent Jiang Mianmian back and was taking quite a while to come out. Perplexed, she knocked on the door and asked, “Changhai, what’s keeping you? It’s time to start work.”
“Mom, I’m feeling off today, I’ll go a bit later,” came Jiang Changhai’s groggy voice from inside the house.
Zhang Guihua, seeing her son’s laziness flare up again, took a deep breath to suppress her anger and asked, “What about your wife? Why hasn’t she come out?”
“Wanyu is also feeling under the weather, I’m staying home to take care of her, I’ll head out soon.”
“You’d better hurry up, if you don’t go, wait and see if I won’t beat you when I get back,” Zhang Guihua said, as she was already late herself and left after issuing a stern warning.
As Zhang Guihua was working in the fields, it was almost ten o’clock before Jiang Changhai leisurely made his way there. He left early in the afternoon, using the excuse of picking up Jiang Mianmian, which infuriated Zhang Guihua for the entire afternoon.
After finishing work, Zhang Guihua stormed home angrily and upon seeing Jiang Changhai sitting on the kang like a lord, she slapped his back hard and scolded, “You little rascal, only serious about work for two days before you start slacking off again, right? Do you not want your share of the grains at the end of the year?”
“Mom, I’ve been feeling unwell these past few days, don’t have much of an appetite, and can’t eat much grain anyway. The work points I’ve earned are enough,” Jiang Changhai said nonchalantly.
What do you think?
