Chapter 74: She’s Feeling Guilty
Chapter 74: Chapter 74: She’s Feeling Guilty
“Ah, then I misunderstood. I thought you wanted to show filial piety to our mother,” Jiang Changhai said to Sun Lixia with a smirk.
“My own son hasn’t shown me any filial piety, how could I expect it from a daughter-in-law?” Zhang Guihua scolded both of them in one sentence.
Sun Lixia’s face turned bright red, and she kept her head down, not daring to say a word.
Yet Jiang Changhai acted as if Zhang Guihua’s words weren’t about him at all, “Mom, what are you talking about? In what way is my younger brother not filial to you?”
Jiang Changtao was once again shocked by his brother’s shamelessness, “Big brother, mom wasn’t talking about me, she was talking about you.”
“Huh? Me?” Jiang Changhai looked as if he had just had an epiphany. @@novelbin@@
“It’s you, you white-eyed wolf, always buying clothes for your daughter. Your old mother hasn’t bought clothes for over a decade, and you’ve never even asked once,” Zhang Guihua complained, heartbroken.
“Hey, mom, that’s a huge misunderstanding. You know, the clothes Mianmian is wearing were approved by dad. When I went to the Supply and Marketing Cooperative, there was only such a big piece of fabric left, just enough to make a set for a child.”
“But mom, don’t worry. Once Mianmian scores first in the whole school and gets the scholarship, I will definitely buy you a piece of good fabric so you can make a new dress. How does that sound?” Jiang Changhai sweet-talked her soothingly.
Hearing her son say this, Zhang Guihua suppressed the smile tugging at her lips and said flatly, “You’ve got some conscience, kid.”
Busy times always fly by, and Jiang Mianmian went to school day in and day out like clockwork. Just like that, half a semester had passed.
Today was the midterm exam at school, and Zhang Guihua had been worrying about it all day. As soon as she finished work in the evening, she hurried home.
Seeing Jiang Mianmian blowing in the yard alone, she immediately asked with eager anticipation, “San Ya, how did the exam go today? Can you get first place?”
Jiang Mianmian thought today’s exam was quite easy, but she knew better than to speak too confidently before the results were out.
So after thinking it over, she said modestly, “Granny, I think I did alright.”
Upon hearing this, Zhang Guihua’s face darkened and she demanded in a high-pitched voice, “Just alright?! You had said you must get first place!”
Jiang Mianmian, seeing her granny’s impressive ability to switch expressions, feared being sprayed with saliva and quickly took a step back.
But to Sun Lixia, that step back indicated guilt.
The brat must have done poorly, mooching off the family for so long at home, afraid of being scolded, she didn’t dare to speak the truth.
“San Ya, good children shouldn’t lie. If you didn’t do well, just tell your granny directly, she won’t blame you,” Sun Lixia said, looking at Jiang Mianmian with bad intentions.
“Third Aunt, I said I did alright,” Jiang Mianmian just repeated herself.
“Good is good, bad is bad, what do you mean by ‘alright’?” Sun Lixia started to nitpick.
Jiang Mianmian was also getting impatient, “Alright means alright. If you really want to know, wait until the results come out tomorrow. And third Aunt, if you have time, you should pay more attention to my second brother. He almost arrived late for the exam today.”
Sun Lixia, feeling that her son was being used to make a point, glared at Jiang Mianmian fiercely, “Your second brother would never lie to his elders!”
“Granny, I’ll be going now,” Jiang Mianmian didn’t want to stay any longer and turned to walk towards the house.
From behind her, Zhang Guihua cursed, “You ungrateful girl, if you do poorly, see if I don’t beat you, you little thieving sprite that mooches off others.”
What do you think?
