Chapter 143: Chapter 143: Complete the Last Task and You Are Free
“It’s no use. Fights and brawls are only taken seriously if they result in death. This person’s arm is broken, but their life remains. If the Host chooses to call the police, it would cause many problems. Please choose wisely.”
Shen Zhiyi ultimately couldn’t overcome the fear in her heart. She was a bit too scared to go down there. She was intelligent and had a good head on her shoulders, but she didn’t know self-defense, and it was clear that this wasn’t a place for honest folk.
So she decided to wait outside for Qin Jiangsheng.
After passing through the gambling area, Qin Jiangsheng approached a large door, pushed it open and walked inside. Four people were sitting around a gambling table, each wearing expensive clothing and adorned with large gold necklaces and bracelets, with champagne and women all around them.
The man leading was dressed in a proper suit, wearing a silver mask on half of his face. He pushed all his chips to the center of the table, a cigarette hanging from his lips as he laughed, “I’m going all in. Anyone want to follow?”
The stakes were two million.
The others exchanged glances, one obese man confidently raising the bet. He grinned and said, “Reveal your cards, Ninth Young Master.”
The middle-aged obese man, with an even larger grin, responded, “I appreciate it, Ninth Young Master.”
Mo Jiu lost.
He tossed his cards onto the table, laughing carelessly, “Just bad luck.”
His gaze turned to the entering Qin Jiangsheng, a hint of interest arising, “Ah Jiang, your luck is always good. Come help me win a few rounds?”
Qin Jiangsheng nodded expressionlessly, moved beside Mo Jiu, where a maidservant brought over a stool for him to sit on. His hands were indeed lucky; he not only won back the money Mo Jiu had lost but also gained a few million more.
“Ninth Young Master, where’s it fair to call in a substitute mid-game? We finally win a little from you, and now it’s all gone back,” said the bosses, jesting among themselves, although, for them, the loss of a few million wasn’t much to fret over.
Anyone coming here to play had to have some wealth to spare.
Mo Jiu chuckled, the half of his face that was visible almost divine, “You all are welcome to find a lucky substitute as well. Ah Jiang is one of a kind.”
He lounged back, “Let’s play some other time. I have things to take care of.”
The others, knowing to take a hint, also got up and left. They came here to lose some money to Mo Jiu in exchange for good merchandise from him now that they’d achieved their goal, there was no need to linger.
The vast room soon cleared out, leaving only the two of them. Mo Jiu’s gaze lingered on Qin Jiangsheng, “Not bad, you seem to have put on some weight. Old Sir Bai has treated you well, hasn’t skimped on anything.”
Qin Jiangsheng didn’t want to chat about such matters and asked directly, “Ninth Young Master, why did you call me here?”
Mo Jiu’s amber eyes showed a hint of helplessness, “We rarely meet, why the rush? Come, have a couple of drinks with me.”
He poured two glasses of liquor. After Qin Jiangsheng received his, he downed it in one gulp. Although not very strong, it packed a punch, but Qin Jiangsheng seemed unaffected.
Mo Jiu asked, “How’s everything at school lately?”
“Not bad.”
He took a small sip, “Thinking of leaving Capital City? I’ve arranged another identity for you in Central Continent, that will let you get closer to the Qin Family faster, oh right, you’ll also get to see your mother whom you haven’t seen in thirteen years.”
The teasing tone in Mo Jiu’s voice didn’t consider whether Qin Jiangsheng was willing, as he laid out the plans.
Qin Jiangsheng hung his head, casting a small shadow, “Ninth Young Master, I don’t have a mother, and I don’t wish to see her. Please refrain from such comments in the future.”
Mo Jiu paused for a moment, then with his hand against his forehead, shook with laughter, “She truly doesn’t deserve to be a mother. She’s probably still scrambling over the Qin Family’s Inheritance Order, yet if she had only brought you back, she could have obtained half of the inheritance for herself. The Qin Family’s direct lineage has been producing daughters for generations, the family’s ancestor decreed that whoever bore a son would get the inheritance. It’s amusing that she knows a shortcut but chooses to seize power alone, such an ambitious woman.”
It meant that Qin Jiangsheng’s biological mother, Qin Wantang, had never mentioned his existence to the Qin Family. Even after being recognized by Bai Family, years have passed without a hint of him in Central Continent; any information heading that way was deliberately intercepted.
If one thought about it, it was obvious.
She would never acknowledge his existence.
Mo Jiu watched Qin Jiangsheng’s complexion with an appreciative look. But to his disappointment, Qin Jiangsheng showed no sign of disturbance, hard to imagine for a youth of only seventeen to conceal his emotions so well. With a few more years to mature, it was terrifying to think what he might become.
“You don’t feel hatred? For you, I’ve always kept an eye on the news from Central Continent.”
A cold laugh seeped from Qin Jiangsheng’s throat, “Ninth Young Master, compared to hatred, you’re no less than I am. The Qin Family is also your target, right?”
Mo Jiu nodded, “Indeed, the Qin Family is loathsome. Once you get your hands on the Inheritance Order, their good days will be over. Do well, and you won’t miss out on what’s yours.”
Qin Jiangsheng exhaled slowly, finally speaking, “Ninth Young Master, I came here today to tell you that I want to leave the organization.”
Mo Jiu slowly raised his head, straightened up, the perfect half of his face cold as ice, his voice unnaturally gentle, “Why?”
“You said when you first met me that I could leave whenever I wanted. This life… it’s grown tiresome, so I want out of the organization.”
“You’re giving up on revenge?”
Qin Jiangsheng locked eyes with him, “I will reach the Qin Family on my own merits.”
After a lengthy silence, Mo Jiu took a drag, exhaling a ring of white smoke, “In these two years, I’ve taught you a lot, and as payment, you’ve done one dangerous mission after another for me. We’re even now. But Ah Jiang, some things don’t go as you wish. I’m not heartless. How about this, at the auction next month, you get the Inheritance Order in front of me no matter what it takes, even if you have to steal it. Complete this final task, and I’ll let you go. You’ll be free, Ah Jiang.”
Qin Jiangsheng frowned slightly, having expected Mo Jiu to be angry at his request, but instead he was met with calmness and asked to do one last task. Not wanting to involve Qu Rong, he nodded, “It’s a deal.”
After speaking, he left.
“Actually…” Behind him, Mo Jiu’s voice was soft and fleeting, “There’s someone else in this world who’s more entitled to the Qin Family’s inheritance than you.”
Qin Jiangsheng paused momentarily, then kept walking without looking back.
He wasn’t interested in the inheritance; he merely couldn’t reconcile and sought an answer from the Qin Family.
After he left, Mo Jiu stood up and scattered all the poker chips on the table in a fit of rage. In the force of it, his silver mask slipped off, revealing the side of his face that was burnt by fire, half angel, half devil. His laughter resembled that of a twisted monster.
“Ungrateful little brat, so naïve, thinking he can leave the organization. Only the dead can leave.”
After venting, he slowly and elegantly put the mask back on.
He had the power to make him, and equally to destroy him.
He should pay the price for his words today.
What do you think?
