Chapter 40: Chapter 40: Titles are External Trappings

Ji Tian arrived at the classroom only to find Jian Chuyi already deeply engrossed in her book.

She leaned in and asked, “Chuyi, want to go for some milk tea?”

Jian Chuyi held her chemistry book in both hands, “No, I need to study.”

“How about we play a game?”

“No games, I need to study.”

“I recently found an amazing comic, let’s read it together?”

...

“No reading, I need to study.”

Ji Tian, “…,” getting wool from this sheep is getting tougher.

She then looked around the classroom and, frankly, under Shen Zhiyi’s influence, the class was fiercely competitive.

And after returning to the classroom, Shen Zhiyi kept her head down and read.

Ji Tian’s gaze lingered on her for a while longer, noticing how she seemed to grow prettier.

Bei Ning also glanced at Shen Zhiyi then lowered her head, seemingly messaging someone.

Ji Tian stood up, unable to find an opening in Class 1. Consequently, she left the classroom. After she left, Bei Ning continued messaging on her phone.

Ji Tian hadn’t really explored the big university campus. @@novelbin@@

It was the time for morning self-study, and besides her bold move, no one else dared step out of the classroom.

She wanted to check out Class 8, but as soon as she descended the stairs, she ran into Gong Dongxi at the corner; after the last warning from Gong Yu in the cafeteria, she had kept her distance from her for a while.

But this time, it seemed she had brought a few people deliberately to block her.

Choosing a corner without surveillance cameras.

Ji Tian’s glance swept over the four people, led by Gong Dongxi, the other three—wealthy hang-arounds, her so-called sisters and lackeys.

Gong Dongxi, still sporting twin ponytails, towered elegantly, donning a pricey custom JK outfit, exposing her slender, long legs in the chilly air.

Crossing her arms, she stood brazen, “Blocking you isn’t exactly easy.”

Ji Tian twitched the corner of her mouth, giving her a weird look, “Are you okay? Why are you blocking me?”

Gong Dongxi couldn’t stand Ji Tian’s aloofness, which smacked of pretentiousness. How else could she be the praised child of wealthy families if she wasn’t putting on an act?

Lately though, Ji Tian seemed to have changed; she had stopped attending painting classes, dance practices, and had even abandoned numerous skills including piano and calligraphy.

She curled her lips mockingly, “Of course, I’m here to mock you. Ranking two thousand five hundred made me almost die of laughter. Also, you’d better stay away from the dance and piano classes forever, so no one will compete with me for first place.”

Ji Tian, “…”

Reflecting, she recalled that Ji Tian indeed used to attend those classes every week, but had stopped for one after the drowning incident.

Having assumed her place, every time she thought of her fate getting back on track and possibly stepping on a sewing machine at any moment, who had the mind to waste time on these useless pursuits? There was not enough time to slack off, let alone waste her youth in a chilly classroom.

Moreover, she wasn’t that interested.

Ji Tian decided to keep up her act, raising her eyebrows, “Rankings are trivial to me, I’m not very interested. Of course, if I wanted to, I could achieve a high ranking too.”

Gong Dongxi was momentarily stunned before bursting into laughter, “Hilarious, still putting on airs, did you become dumb from a fall to score so low? I hope you keep it up, mingling with the trash.”

Ji Tian wouldn’t lose the moral high ground, narrowing her eyes slightly, “Even if I’m trash, I’m still better than a dog like you who likes to bite everyone.”

“Ji Tian, are you looking for death?” Gong Dongxi was so angry her face turned red, she now found it difficult to even look at her own name.

Ji Tian shifted her gaze, thinking about how in the book, Gong Dongxi was madly in love with Bai Tingyu to the point of distorting her own nature from jealousy, making her utterly vile, deserving the tragic end outlined in the plot summary.

Her eyes twinkling, she smiled, “Whether I die or not isn’t up to you, but you seem to be sprinting down the road to your own demise.”

Gong Dongxi frowned, “What are you talking about?”

“The incident where Shen Zhiyi was cornered by thugs was your doing, wasn’t it?”

Ji Tian stated this not as a question but as a firm assertion.

Intended to explode Gong Dongxi’s day.

And Gong Dongxi didn’t disappoint, a flash of panic in her eyes, “What, what are you talking about, I didn’t do such a thing, don’t slander me.”

Ji Tian smiled slightly, “Actually, whether you did it or not doesn’t really concern me, because no matter how you compare, you can never surpass Shen Zhiyi. Bai Tingyu only has eyes for the outstanding Shen Zhiyi. The more you try to sabotage, the closer you bring them together. Shen Zhiyi was rescued by Bai Tingyu, and he even went out of his way to help her. What do you think he would think of you if he knew you were behind this?”

Gong Dongxi was panicking terribly when someone gently tugged at her clothes. Turning around, she saw her best friend, Feng Juanjuan, giving her a meaningful look.

Her expression cleared immediately, and looking back at Ji Tian, she arrogantly tilted her chin up, “This has nothing to do with me at all. You can tell Bai Tingyu if you want, let him investigate. Ji Tian, do you think you’re clever? Moreover, Bai Tingyu would never fall for a poor girl like Shen Zhiyi, who has neither money nor looks. Only a lady of a wealthy family like me is worthy of him.”

With that, Gong Dongxi walked away.

Ji Tian frowned slightly, it wasn’t Gong Dongxi?

Then who was it?

But subconsciously, Ji Tian felt that Gong Dongxi was involved in this affair.

Unable to understand, she went to class 8.

After Gong Dongxi walked away, she raised her hand to soothe her racing heart, her expression somewhat distorted, “Did you guys secretly leak this out?”

Apart from Feng Juanjuan, the other two panicked and waved their hands vigorously, “Xixi, we swear we didn’t say anything. Maybe Ji Tian guessed it, it has nothing to do with us.”

Feng Juanjuan observed for a moment before saying, “Xixi, we’re all sisters here, we’d never betray you. But, maybe we should ask Bei Ning if there was a mistake on her end.”

Gong Dongxi frowned, “You think Bei Ning would betray me?”

Feng Juanjuan’s expression remained unchanged, “You value her more because she’s in class 1, helping you keep an eye on Bai Tingyu in class 2, but who knows if she has developed inappropriate thoughts.”

Though Feng Juanjuan’s words were ambiguous, Gong Dongxi still involuntarily thought of Bei Ning also liking Bai Tingyu and exposing her flaws to him behind her back.

Just thinking of Bai Tingyu drifting further away from her made her want to kill Bei Ning.

Her face dark, she asked, “So, what should we do?”

Feng Juanjuan’s eyes flickered, and she promptly suggested, “We can test her loyalty. There’s a field trip in a couple of days, and Ji Tian will definitely be going. Then we can…”

She whispered the rest, and Gong Dongxi’s eyes lit up. She had long disliked Ji Tian and smiled gleefully, squinting her eyes, “Okay, that’s settled then. I’ll go talk to Bei Ning later.”
