Chapter 26: Concern
To Bo Jingmo, last night’s events felt like a bizarre dream.
Inside the film set, he had actually… fallen for an NPC.
When he woke up, he found a message from Hou Liang.
As both an observer and someone who had teamed up with Bo Jingmo multiple times, no one was more shocked than him about last night’s events.
He had seen, with his own eyes, just how obedient Bo Jingmo had been to that NPC.
[Hou Liang: Did you watch the playback from last night? Uh… you might want to prepare yourself. You were a bit different than usual.]
Hou Liang assumed that, like before, Bo Jingmo had no self-awareness after turning into a ghost and had no memory of what happened in the film. So, he tried to gently break the news.
But Bo Jingmo remembered everything—crystal clear.
More than that, his mind couldn’t stop replaying the woman’s final words to him:
“See you next time.”It was as if… she hadn’t just been delivering a line, but rather, she was genuinely expecting their next meeting.
Suppressing the strange feeling in his chest, Bo Jingmo’s gaze darkened as he pulled up the playback.
The first time she appeared—a golden-haired, blue-eyed woman looking down at him with an air of superiority—his heart had skipped a beat.
His expression darkened further. He pressed his lips together and fast-forwarded through the footage—only to realize that many scenes were missing.
Scenes like…
The night he went to find her at the villa.
The moment he pinned her down and kissed her while she was drunk.
None of them had been included in the playback.
It was as if… those moments were his secret alone.
The audience claimed Filia had been manipulating Bo Jingmo, but in the uncaptured moments, it was him who had made the first move.
Even after rewatching the entire plot, Bo Jingmo couldn’t deny the undeniable pull he felt toward the golden-haired woman on the screen.
Did he really like this NPC? Or was it just the system messing with him?
The fact that this emotion was beyond his control both intrigued and unnerved him.
After a moment of thought, he started digging through old footage of the same horror film from past runs.
To his surprise, Filia had never appeared in any of them.
He kept searching until he finally found a scene where the neighbor showed up.
Same golden hair, blue eyes—but this time, the woman was barely on-screen for a single second, staring at the protagonist group with a venomous gaze, as if plotting something.
And yet, Bo Jingmo’s brows furrowed.
Something was off.
This wasn’t the same person.
The Filia he had met—whether she was deceiving him or using the protagonist group—always had a playful smirk on her lips, her gaze casual and nonchalant.
She had never made an expression like that.
Was it just an NPC reset error?
“A coincidence?”
His gaze darkened as he closed the playback screen.
And yet, the image of her smiling eyes continued to loop in his mind.
At that very moment—those same smiling eyes locked onto his from across the distance.
One black, one blue—even though their eye colors were completely different, the feeling he got was exactly the same.
His chest tightened, breath stuttering.
Even as someone called his name multiple times—
"Bo-ge? Bo-ge? What are you thinking about?"
Chen Chao, confused, followed Bo Jingmo’s gaze and saw a girl sitting on a bench wearing a cap.
Her features were delicate and refined, her eyes especially captivating—slightly upturned at the corners, carrying a teasing, almost seductive glint.
And she was staring directly at their group.
No—she was staring directly at Bo Jingmo.
Wait…
Did they know each other?
“Bo-ge, do you know that girl?”
Bo Jingmo’s Adam’s apple bobbed slightly. His expression darkened as he shifted his gaze away and continued walking, his voice indifferent:
“No.”
…No?
Then why had they just stared at each other like that?
Chen Chao scratched his head and looked over at Ye Boli, silently asking what the hell was going on.
But Ye Boli just shook his head—he had no clue either.
—
Meanwhile, Yu Li, watching Bo Jingmo completely ignore her, leaned back on the bench, propping herself up with one hand.
She clicked her tongue twice and sighed dramatically.
“Sigh… so cold.”
The system, witnessing this, was absolutely furious.
“How dare he treat you like this?! Sister! You literally saved him in the horror film! What a scumbag! We’re not saving him ever again!”
It sounded personally betrayed, as if Bo Jingmo had wronged it instead.
Yu Li: “……”
Why was this system always more emotionally invested than she was?
Bo Jingmo’s indifference didn’t surprise her.
This was just how he acted in front of outsiders.
Even when she first met him, he ignored her several times.
The only reason things had played out differently in the horror film was because he had lost control.
She chuckled and glanced at the system. “Didn’t you observe us before? You should know this already.”
The system froze. “…Know what?”
“That I was the one who pursued Bo Jingmo first.”
The system completely short-circuited.
Wait. What?
This… was a female-chasing-male dynamic?!
Its sister was actually the one who had taken the initiative?!
The system lagged. “But… this… this…”
“Even so, he still shouldn’t treat you like this! Doesn’t this upset you?!”
Anyone would feel bad being treated this way after everything, right?!
Yu Li watched the group move further away, then slowly lowered her head, pressing a hand to her stomach.
Her eyes gleamed slightly beneath the shadow of her cap, and she let out a soft chuckle.
“You really think Bo Jingmo’s acting indifferent?”
“He’s already starting to care.”
Just like before—when she had pursued him, he had pretended not to care, only to secretly check in on her at night.
And this time, it would be even easier—because right now, Bo Jingmo had amnesia.
He was much easier to mess with.
—
Chen Chao had been discreetly watching the girl the whole time.
Just as he was about to look away, he saw her suddenly clutch her stomach and lower her head, looking visibly unwell.
Without thinking, he blurted out, “Hey—”
He turned to tell Bo Jingmo—but before he could even speak, he froze.
Because—without a word, Bo Jingmo’s footsteps suddenly changed direction.
He walked straight toward her.
Chen Chao: ???
What the hell?!
Didn’t you just say you didn’t know her?!
His expression was utterly bewildered as he watched Bo Jingmo crouch down in front of the girl, speaking to her in a low voice.
…Bro.
Didn’t you just say you didn’t know her?!
Still baffled, Chen Chao turned to Ye Boli and asked, “…Should we… follow him? Are they really strangers?”
Ye Boli’s lips curled into a slow, knowing smile.
He patted Chen Chao’s shoulder.
“You tell me.”
Then, with an understanding look, he said, “Let’s go. Time for class.”
—
Meanwhile, Yu Li gazed at the shadow that fell over her as Bo Jingmo crouched down in front of her, the corner of her lips curving upward.
When Yu Li finally lifted her head, her expression had already shifted to one of confusion.
The harsh sunlight made her squint, preventing her from clearly seeing the young man’s face.
Noticing this, he crouched down slightly, his voice distant yet gentle.
“Classmate, are you feeling unwell?”
At that moment, Yu Li’s vision adjusted, and she got a proper look at him.
She froze for a brief second, subtly raising an eyebrow.
The man before her had an innately refined and aloof demeanor. His deep-set eyes carried a natural sharpness, framed by double eyelids and a strong brow bone. His pupils were dark and fathomless, always giving off a detached air when he looked at someone.
There was an undeniable elegance to his posture and mannerisms—evidence of a strictly disciplined upbringing.
He was exactly the same as before.
Even the faint scent of pinewood on him—she recognized it instantly.
She had bought that exact same fragrance for him before.
Yu Li lowered her head, her long eyelashes casting shadows over her expression, concealing the flicker of emotion in her eyes.
All he would see was her pale complexion, the way she lightly bit her lip, and how her voice sounded soft and weak.
"It's nothing… I just didn’t eat breakfast this morning. My stomach hurts a little."
Bo Jingmo’s gaze swept over to the bread beside her.
The plastic packaging was still covered in condensation, clearly taken straight from a fridge.
His brows instinctively furrowed, and his tone unconsciously sharpened:
“Your stomach hurts, and you’re eating cold bread?”
Yu Li blinked at him, looking genuinely perplexed.
It wasn’t until she met his gaze that Bo Jingmo realized—his reaction was far too strong.
These weren’t the words someone like him would typically say.
Why did it bother him that she was eating cold bread?
Why did it matter to him if her stomach hurt?
The mask of cool indifference cracked slightly, revealing a subtle, nearly imperceptible trace of nervousness.
His body tensed, and his voice sounded oddly stiff as he tried to recover.
“I was just—”
"Ah, sorry."
Yu Li cut him off before he could finish, tilting her head and blinking innocently.
“And… you are?”
The air between them stilled.
Bo Jingmo went completely silent for a few seconds.
He had initially approached to dispel his suspicions, to convince himself that the girl in front of him was nothing like that NPC.
But after getting close, after seeing her discomfort—he had instinctively wanted to ask more questions.
He had completely forgotten his original purpose.
Looking into her beautiful, upturned eyes, his Adam’s apple bobbed slightly.
Then, he abruptly averted his gaze.
A few seconds later, his voice finally broke the silence—his tone formal and polite, giving no room for error.
"Apologies, classmate. I’m the student council president. I saw that you seemed unwell—"
He hesitated.
It was obvious that this wasn’t something he was used to saying.
But he quickly adjusted and continued, voice unwavering—
“—so I instinctively felt the need to check on you.”
Yu Li: “……”
Yeah, sure. Keep making things up.
What do you think?
