An evolving dragon

Departure

Following the initial wave of anxiety, I found solace in my mother's affection. Having been an orphan prior to transforming into a dragon, this was an unfamiliar feeling for me. Mid-flight, I felt her gently inspecting me for any injuries sustained during the hatching process. It was then that she bestowed upon me the name Fafnir, reminiscent of one of the mightiest kings among fire dragons in our world's legends.

In a blink, two years sped by. During this period, my mother, Ember, guided me through the fundamentals of dragon life—hunting and tracking prey took precedence among them. As I was inherently a fire dragon, she also introduced me to basic fire spells that came more naturally to me; mastering abilities like Dragon Breath, Mana Flow, Fire Lance, and Fire Arrow proved relatively straightforward.

One day after our training session she suddenly said:

"Child, enemies of our family are pursuing us. Consequently, I cannot remain with you any longer. It is essential for your safety that I leave so you can become the beacon of hope needed to save your father and conquer those who threaten us."

"I don’t understand why they’re after you? Is Dad at risk?" I inquired urgently.

She reassured me that clarity would come as I matured but added gravely,

"For your final lesson today, it's crucial that we discuss Drogo's terrain—the world we inhabit—and its neighboring continents where various species reside."

Three distinct continents surround Drogo:

1. **Elven** – This is primarily home to most elves.

2. **The Bright Empire** – A territory predominantly occupied by humans.

3. **Wastelands** – This area is infested with savage beasts known for their immediate aggression and increasing strength as one ventures deeper within it.

"You will glean further knowledge from my sister Blaze," Ember continued resolutely. "She will set forth your first challenge when you reach juvenile status from hatchling. And don't forget, Drake is your last name, but don't give it to anybody, not even your aunt. Learn everything that you can from her, and please don't cause any trouble. Now it's time to see what's outside; it is busy thinking about how to get... .

Anyway, at that moment, the unexpected roar covered the sky. Ember's features turned hard as she enveloped me under her powerful wings. The warmth and strength of her presence told me that everything would be alright. But I could sense it was urgent.

"Fafnir," she whispered in a soft voice full of love with determination, "you've got to be strong. Remember all the things that I have taught you and believe in yourself. The family legacy is upon your shoulder."

And with that, Ember flew away into the skies until I saw her vanish into the horizon. I couldn't stop myself from watching her leave, both sad and determined in me. My journey had just begun with the determination to grow stronger against every possible challenge to come.

During the following weeks, I kept training under Blaze's careful gaze. She was a strong dragon and an amused mentor whose scales shimmered like molten lava. Blaze taught me advanced forms of combat, making me push myself and develop strength and the magical abilities needed to survive.

One day, as she trained me, I learned about the prophecy about which the ancients spoke ages ago-some dragon fire was to return and become the great leader who would carry forth the fragmented clans of dragons, protecting peace in Drogo. I wondered, could it be me who was to fulfill it? Having grown up, I was beginning to understand the extent of my responsibilities; I knew that my father's fate and the fate of our world depended on how I chose to act. Every day, I worked on that magic and grew to become ever more persuaded that I was worthy of the name my mother had bestowed upon me-a name that would go back to its ancestry, Fafnir, the fire dragon king.
