Gajev let out a bitter smile. Ever since he had sworn allegiance to Cabelenus, he had never once defied his orders. The thought that he would one day betray him, even in this small way, had never crossed his mind.

“Don’t feel guilty. You did the right thing.”

“For a loyal dog, right and wrong don’t matter. The master judges. A dog does not.”

“Even if you pretend to be a dog, you are still human.”

“There’s no reason to overcomplicate things. It’s just an unborn child. What could be so terrifying about a tiny life that one must reject it?”

“His Highness simply does not want a child.”

Lady Morco clenched the ring Gajev had handed her. It contained the conversation between Cabelenus and Gajev, carefully recorded.

“His Highness is not someone who experiences fear.”

“We can’t know that for sure. We don’t know what kind of life he endured before coming to Schwarhan.”
