Chapter 40: Chapter 40 She Doesn’t Care, She Can Fly
Jiang Yan had just finished scrolling through the important messages in the owner’s group chat when the property manager dropped an electronic spreadsheet in the group.
“Shallow Bay Underground Temporary Shelter Arrangement.xls”
Property Manager 1: Following official notification, all Shallow Bay owners please move your living supplies to the underground parking by 12 a.m. tonight (space is limited, it’s recommended not to exceed three items per person). See spreadsheet for your residence location and parking spot number. Those not present by 12 a.m. are considered to have forfeited their places, with the responsibility on themselves.
Property Manager 1: Some temporary parking spots will be reserved for official supply storage; the shelter is only for temporary respite from the extreme heat, the conditions are basic, so please be understanding. In this special period, we ask that all owners band together to overcome these difficult times! Struggle.jpg
Jiang Yan clicked open the spreadsheet and quickly found her own information:
Resident Name: A-3201;
Head of Household: Jiang xx (Female);
Parking Spot Purchased: No; @@novelbin@@
Parking Spot Rented: No;
Reported Going to Official Shelter: No;
Planned Accommodation Area: Shared Area – Miscellaneous Section, F Zone-414 (Co-inhabitants: D1103, Liu xx (Female); D1103, Zhang xx (Female); D1103, Gong xx (Female));
Well, a parking spot of less than ten square meters is squeezing in four people.
The latter are clearly several girls sharing a lease.
She glanced again at the others—those without parking spots or without rented spots, their situation was likely similar to hers.
Only then did she realize that in the Shallow Bay community, there were quite a few tenants.
Additionally, four or five families had reported that they would go to the official shelter.
Seven or eight households of elderly people, left behind while the young people weren’t at home and were residing in the high-rise, had simply given up on descending the stairs and were prepared to quietly face death.
Indeed, in such hot weather, even young people can hardly bear it, let alone the elderly with various chronic illnesses.
Just making it halfway down the stairs could bring on a fatal illness.
The neighbors, who usually helped each other, were now all remaining silent as well.
The heat and Blood Mosquitoes arrived swiftly, but the numbness and callousness of the people came even faster.
The property staff, not a few of whom had thrown in the towel these past two days and returned to their hometowns, were also involved in organizing the shelters in collaboration with the officials and had likewise ignored the choices of those elderly people.
Jiang Yan had her Space, and naturally, she wasn’t going to squeeze into an underground shelter with over a thousand people.
Not to mention the inconvenience of men and women of all ages living together, there would be snoring, farting, teeth grinding, sleep talking, and a bunch of noisy children.
She absolutely couldn’t stand such an environment.
But for her to choose to stay home would be too conspicuous.
After all, she lived on the top floor.
Of all the floors, the topmost are the least resistant to high temperatures.
Many developers, in order to save on construction costs, had cut corners on the insulation coating and waterproof materials on the roof.
This state-owned enterprise was no exception.
Jiang Yan quickly made up her mind: she would pretend to go to the official shelter alone, avoiding the collective living arrangement underground and other people’s gossip.
Then she would put on her jet flight suit and take advantage of the dark, windy night to stealthily fly back home.
There was no better solution than that.
With that thought, Jiang Yan stood up and exited her Space.
As soon as she set foot in her apartment, a wave of heat enveloped her completely.
It was like walking into a dry sauna room.
She looked at the thermometer, and it was already 62 degrees Celsius outside.
It wasn’t as bad inside thanks to various insulation measures. Even without the air conditioning on, it was around 58 or 59 degrees.
But that was still high.
The temperature in a sauna’s dry steam room is about 80 degrees.
But there, one has an ice towel covering their face.
It cools down your face while also preventing respiratory difficulties.
People sit still, and after getting hot, they can choose to leave at any time.
But now, obviously, that was not the case. This oppressive heat was continuously there, causing great discomfort.
Jiang Yan’s living room had a floor-to-ceiling window facing the garden, while her master bedroom window faced the outer side of the community, where she could see the urban buildings and street views outside.
She walked over and watched for a while.
The streets were dead silent.
The only living things were the sporadic Blood Mosquitoes flying in the air.
Not afraid of the high heat or bright light, they sought targets that could provide fresh blood.
She took out her phone to check the map and quickly chose a temporary stopping point for her outing.
Her flight suit could only fly for 8-10 minutes, so the place to rest couldn’t be too far.
And with the current high temperatures, along with the potential threat of Blood Mosquito attacks, she couldn’t go far either.
Just thinking of those increasingly large mutant mosquitoes made Jiang Yan’s back go cold.
She had plenty of mosquito repellents in her Space. However, thinking about what the experts had said earlier, that homemade traditional Chinese medicine mosquito repellent bags were much more effective than commercial repellents against these Blood Mosquitoes, she once again entered her Space.
She dug out a previous piece of news which listed twelve types of herbal ingredients:
Mugwort, Mint, Angelica dahurica, Lemongrass, Perilla Leaf, Lavender, Honeysuckle, Clove, Rosemary, Nard, Patchouli, Camphor Leaf.
Lavender, Honeysuckle, and Lemongrass were present in the herbal tea she had bought.
Rosemary, Clove, and Patchouli were in the spices she purchased.
As for Mint, she only had fresh ones that she bought with groceries.
She took some out to the space outside, placing it by the floor-to-ceiling window to dry in the high heat.
She couldn’t find Nard.
The rest, such as Mugwort and Angelica dahurica and so on, she had bought the herbs in bulk.
With a thought, Jiang Yan took all these supplies out of the “Warehouse Area” along with two large-sized gauze rolls and a sewing kit and began sewing small pouches.
She wasn’t very good with needlework; the dozen or so bags turned out crooked, looking as if a bunch of black worms had crawled across them.
However, as long as they served their function, it was fine.
After she finished sewing the bags and casually ate a bowl of cold noodles and drank a bottle of ice-cola, the Mint was almost done drying.
The traditional Chinese medicine mosquito repellent bags were quickly made.
She took out the backpack, which was previously disguised with instant noodles and tissues, once more and hung a circle of repellent bags on it.
After changing into the insulation clothes, she also strapped several bags onto her neck, legs, and arms. Fully armed, she then left the apartment.
The scent of these herbs was very strong. Even through the insulated suit’s hood, Jiang Yan could smell the intense aroma of traditional Chinese medicine.
She locked the door, set the intrusion prevention system to a high level with 500v electric shock strength, and then headed towards the stairwell.
The doors of apartment 3203 and 3204 were half-open, and He Chunmei and her group seemed busy preparing the items to be taken to the underground parking.
Occasionally, He Chunmei’s voice could be heard bossily instructing Zhou Guangfu inside the apartment.
It wasn’t just them either; the doors on other floors were all half-open.
The temperature in the corridor was a bit lower than inside the homes. To prevent Blood Mosquitoes from entering, nearly all families had shut their windows tightly.
The only air circulation was between the living rooms and the corridors.
All property-managed doors to the buildings and entrances to the underground parking were shut tight.
In such heat, no one dared to go out.
What do you think?
