Apocalypse: I Built the Infinite Train

Chapter 35: Survivor Camp

“Hmph!” Qian Yu snorted coldly, immediately pulling out a pistol and aiming it at Lou Shasha’s head. His voice was laced with venom as he said, “If we were somewhere else, I wouldn’t care if you got yourselves killed. But here, nobody can leave, and we’re all in the same boat. If you attract trouble, I’ll be the first to put a bullet through you and your brother!”

At that moment, Lou Hua, who had been silent, suddenly reached out and grabbed Qian Yu’s hand. In an instant, all of Qian Yu’s men raised their guns and aimed them at Lou Hua. However, Lou Hua merely tightened his grip on Qian Yu’s wrist, forcing his hand down and preventing him from pulling the trigger.

“Let go of me!” Qian Yu’s eyes flashed with panic as he struggled to free himself, only to discover that Lou Hua’s strength was astonishing.

“Brother!” Lou Shasha called out anxiously, clearly not wanting to escalate the situation with these men.

Hearing his sister’s voice, Lou Hua finally loosened his grip on Qian Yu’s hand, his expression calm and unchanging as he looked at him.

Qian Yu gritted his teeth, shaking his now aching hand. His eyes glinted with malice as he glared at the siblings. Just as he was about to lash out, his gaze shifted to Lin Xian and KIKI in the truck.

“And who are they?” he asked.

“Same as us—unlucky fools who stumbled in here,” Lou Shasha replied.

Qian Yu’s expression flickered, his gaze lingering briefly on KIKI before he snorted and turned to leave, gesturing for his men to follow.

“Eagle, keep a close eye on those siblings. Bring extra men,” Qian Yu ordered in a cold voice as they walked away.

“Boss, that Lou Hua might be an Ability User, but he’s not invincible. If you want him gone, it wouldn’t be hard,” the scar-faced man walking beside Qian Yu said casually.

“No need,” Qian Yu replied, his tone dark. “If we’re going to charge through, that guy might still come in handy.”

Qian Yu wasn’t stupid. The combat power of an Ability User was far beyond that of ordinary people. While Lou Hua couldn’t be recruited to his side, with the group still trapped in the fog, Qian Yu wouldn’t mind having a few more disposable pawns to improve his own chances of survival.

The modified pickup truck slowly drove into the plaza, parking in a corner. Many survivors from the other convoys cast curious and wary glances in their direction, though most of the attention was focused on Lin Xian and KIKI, the two unfamiliar faces.

Aside from Qian Yu’s Black Jiao Convoy and the Lou siblings’ truck, there were over a dozen other survivor convoys stuck here.

Most of these groups were made up of people fleeing eastward from nearby cities. The largest groups had over twenty people, while the smallest had only a handful. Unlike the heavily armed Black Jiao Convoy, most of the others had only a few firearms at best.

The convoys were clustered in different areas of the plaza. Women and children stayed inside the vehicles, while the men patrolled the perimeter on high alert.

“When we first arrived two days ago, there were more people here. But yesterday, everyone banded together and tried to charge toward the edge of the city. We lost dozens of people, so we had no choice but to retreat,” Lou Shasha explained as she jumped out of the truck, tossing two cans of food to Lin Xian.

She added, “You have abilities, and so does my brother. If we work together, maybe we can make another attempt to break out…”

Lin Xian and KIKI glanced at Lou Shasha’s towering brother behind her. The stark contrast between the siblings was hard to ignore. Lou Shasha was petite like a fawn, while Lou Hua was built like a bear.

“I’m not sure,” Lin Xian said seriously. “Even just that spider today was tough enough. If there are more monsters out there, I don’t think our chances are very high.”

He surveyed the plaza. There were at least two or three hundred people here. Qian Yu’s Black Jiao Convoy was well-equipped, and combined with the other groups, there were at least seventy or eighty firearms. If even that kind of firepower had failed to get them out, and they’d lost dozens of lives in the process, adding just him and KIKI to the mix didn’t seem like a game-changer.

KIKI climbed onto the truck’s tailgate, her legs swinging as she gazed at the foggy sky. “What’s up with this damn fog?” she muttered impatiently.

“Who knows? It hasn’t shown any signs of clearing in days,” Lou Shasha said with a hint of despair.

“So what now?”

Lou Shasha gestured toward the center of the plaza, where Qian Yu and the leaders of several other convoys were deep in discussion.

“I think they’re still planning to make a break for it. If we can’t get out before the Polar Night sets in, we’re all doomed…”

Time passed slowly. Lin Xian glanced at his watch—it was 6:05 PM, with only forty minutes left until nightfall.

But thinking about it, the current situation wasn’t much different from nighttime already.

“Do the monsters attack more aggressively after dark?” Lin Xian asked Lou Shasha.

“They do,” she nodded. “Any loud noise will attract those grotesque zombies, but the bigger creatures haven’t shown up yet…”

Before she could finish, the distant roar of engines and gunfire suddenly shattered the tense calm of the survivor camp. Everyone immediately stood up. The men grabbed their weapons, ready for a fight.

“What’s that sound?!”

“Over there!”

“Be careful!”

“Is it another convoy?”

The survivors murmured in alarm. Lin Xian and Lou Shasha exchanged wary glances. “Let’s check it out!” Lou Shasha grabbed her grenade launcher and ran toward the commotion, her brother Lou Hua retrieving a rifle from the driver’s cabin to follow her.

Lin Xian and KIKI cautiously trailed behind.

In the northwest street, dense fog rolled in as the sound of groaning corpses and gunfire grew closer. The survivors scattered across the plaza spread out defensively. Some climbed onto vehicles, while others ducked behind roadside planters for cover.

Soon, several military jeeps burst through the fog, crushing a few grotesque zombies under their wheels. The people in the jeeps fired relentlessly at the creatures swarming the streets and sidewalks behind them.

Qian Yu’s eyes lit up when he saw the military vehicles. Regardless of who they were, their firepower gave him a better chance of survival.

“Everyone, help them out!” he ordered.

Gunfire erupted across the plaza, echoing like a small-scale modern battlefield.

Under the cover of the survivors’ heavy firepower, the military jeeps quickly broke through the zombie horde and entered the plaza.

As the vehicles retreated to the makeshift defensive line, more gunmen from the survivor camp opened fire, joining the battle against the advancing zombie tide.

At this moment, several pale zombie dogs, controlled by the black centipede-like creatures, howled as they lunged out of the horde. In a flash, they pounced on a few unfortunate survivors who couldn’t dodge in time, sinking their gaping maws into flesh and tearing viciously.

“Ahhh!!!”

The unlucky victims screamed in agony.

“Hold the line!!” someone shouted.

The convoy’s defensive perimeter began to shrink under the relentless assault, the sound of gunfire echoing as the zombie dogs rampaged, ignoring the hail of bullets and crashing straight into the crowd.

“Take these beasts out first!” Lin Xian barked decisively. To survive, they had no choice but to align with the other survivors.

Thud! Thud! Thud!

Lin Xian fired several wind cannon blasts, shattering the heads of multiple zombies. Meanwhile, Lou Shasha and Lou Hua also joined the fight.

Lou Hua didn’t bother with the rifle slung on his back. Instead, he charged forward, grabbing a roadside guardrail with one hand. With a tremendous heave, he tore off the metal pole and hurled it with all his might.

Whoosh!

The metal pipe screamed through the air before impaling a pale zombie dog, sending its body flying over ten meters, leaving a gruesome trail in its wake.

“Whoa, what incredible strength!” KIKI exclaimed in amazement.

“He’s an Ability User,” Lin Xian said solemnly.

“What kind of ability? Super strength?”

At this moment, the people in the military jeeps also disembarked to join the fight.

Lin Xian had assumed the newcomers would be military personnel, but to his surprise, they were civilians dressed in a hodgepodge of clothing. Leading them was a balding middle-aged man who appeared to be in his forties. However, the weapons they wielded were unmistakably military-grade—standard-issue Xinghuo-26 automatic tactical rifles.

“Focus on killing those dogs first!” Qian Yu bellowed in fury, his rage fueled by the sight of his own men falling one after another. His rifle spat continuous streams of bullets at the zombie dogs charging through the crowd.

“I’m getting in on this!”

Seeing the zombie dogs rampaging through the survivors, KIKI gritted her teeth in frustration. She suddenly reached out, and to the shock of everyone around, she lifted an abandoned bus on the roadside with invisible force. With a swift motion, she hurled it forward!

Boom!

The immense force flattened dozens of grotesque zombies and a handful of zombie dogs, crushing them into a pile of mangled flesh and gore that smeared across the road. The sight left everyone stunned and filled with dread.

The sheer magnitude of the impact drew countless astonished gazes toward her. Nobody had expected this new face to be such a powerful Ability User.

KIKI’s devastating move instantly eased the pressure on the group. The remaining armed survivors quickly regrouped and reestablished their defensive line.

With a renewed barrage of gunfire, it didn’t take long before the previously overwhelming zombie horde began to recede. The streets grew quieter as the last of the gunfire faded away.

The sudden zombie tide attack left the Black Jiao Convoy with three casualties, and the entire survivor camp suffered over ten deaths. The plaza was now heavy with the stench of blood and filled with an air of tragedy.

As the survivors caught their breath, Lou Shasha gaped at KIKI with wide eyes.

“Wow, you’re amazing!” she exclaimed.

Lou Hua, standing protectively behind Lou Shasha, also studied Lin Xian and KIKI with a curious and unreadable expression.

Meanwhile, Qian Yu and Eagle from the Black Jiao Convoy exchanged complicated glances, their eyes fixed on KIKI. The atmosphere turned distinctly uneasy.
