Chapter 64: Delicious Fish Head Soup
Chapter 64: Delicious Fish Head Soup
“Piaoxu, Mom already said, the cookie… Mom ate it,” Wang Huifang said, as she looked at her daughter’s expression, feeling uneasy inside.
Actually, Sister Gu had taken the cookie.
During those days, a few men had seen them, a woman and a child, and tried to cause trouble. Sister Gu had seen this, helped by driving them away, and even accidentally cut her hand in the process.
Sister Gu had done them such a big favor by asking for a pack of cookies; how could she refuse?
But she definitely couldn’t tell her daughter directly, knowing her daughter would surely scold Sister Gu.
Sister Gu had always supported their family; she needed to be grateful and not let her daughter speak ill of others.
Sister Gu was clearly a good person; why wouldn’t her two daughters believe it? It was bad enough that they just called Sister Gu by her name, but they also always maliciously speculated about her.
“Mom, you’re lying,” Liu Piaoxu said, staring at Wang Huifang, convinced. Her mom always avoided eye contact and looked around whenever she lied.
“Mom isn’t lying,” Wang Huifang could only argue weakly.
“You are lying. The cookies must’ve been eaten by Da Bao again,” Liu Piaoxu said, her face full of frustration.
It was always like this.
“Piaoxu…” Wang Huifang moved her lips, not knowing what to say.
“Mom, I’m tired,” Liu Piaoxu said, somewhat angrily, as Mom had once again given the stuff her sister brought back to Gu Honghua.
Stuff that her sister had brought back with such difficulty, always ended up in Da Bao’s mouth.
Da Bao was so fat, the fattest person she had ever seen. Gu Honghua kept saying they were poor, had nothing to eat or drink. Then why was Da Bao so fat?
As fat as a ball.
The more Liu Piaoxu thought about it, the more frustrated she became. Thinking about it made her headache lessen and gave her strength.
Out of anger.
Liu Piaoxu glanced at her still crying mother and thought about her sister again.
When would her sister finally come back?
Liu Wutong, deeply missed by her younger sister, sneezed.
She had just come up from diving to retrieve some items.
The Cheetah Team had taken on a salvaging task from a base, helping the base to salvage supplies, and getting a share of the salvaged goods in return.
Liu Wutong had been working like this for many days. The Cheetah Team was among the first batch to take on the task; they spent all day in the water picking up items and went straight to sleep when they returned at night.
Salvaging items in the torrential rain was very exhausting, so they divided into five groups, taking turns diving and resting.
Salvaging was not easy; stabilizing oneself in such heavy rain was hard enough, let alone diving down to retrieve items.
They would tie a rope around their waist and hold a rock before diving; that was it.
If they accidentally got tangled up in something underwater…
But fortunately, the pay was substantial.
The salvaged goods were split with the base—two for them, eight for the base.
The base also provided meals.
With some luck, they could even catch a mutated fish and get an extra meal.
Usually, those with a team would go out to salvage with their team; those without would try to form a team. Breakfast and lunch were consumed collectively at the base, lunch being taken away in the morning before departure.
The Cheetah Team was in luck; their leader Xu Jiaoqin found a high-rise building that hadn’t been completely submerged.
They occupied the highest residence in the building, thankfully having a shelter from the wind and rain.
They could come up here to rest.
Unlike the previous days where they could only stay on the rooftop, getting drenched while nibbling on dry food.
The dry food, once wet, was soggy, not at all like something that could choke a person.
Not only had they found a good shelter, but Yun Wujiu had also caught a mutated fish.
The body of this mutated fish was poisonous, but the head was not. Using a pot and some water from this residence, they could make a pot of fish head soup.
Although it had no green onions, ginger, or condiments, just salt and was quite fishy, at least there was a fish head.
There was some meat.
As long as it was meat, they were not choosy.
A fish head was meticulously divided by Xu Jiaoqin into many portions, each person cherished and carefully ate their share.
They wouldn’t even discard the bones, chewing them up to swallow as a calcium supplement.
As they ate, someone remembered the Galaxy Supermarket.
“The simmered skewers there were so delicious.”
Regrettably, the Cheetah Team was not very affluent, even though they were superpower users, their captain was strict and wouldn’t allow them to commit bad deeds. Thus, they also lived rather harsh lives.
Otherwise, if they were like the Fierce Tiger Team, with a few underhanded strategies, they would have been rich already.
They afforded it once, and after a difficult search, found some gold and silver, but it was soon gone. Since then, they had to honestly continue with the tasks assigned by the base.
“Yes, it was the tastiest skewers I’ve ever had, and I wonder if we’ll ever get the chance to eat them again.”
“But… the base has been flooded, and the supermarket…”
The supermarket area was even lower than where the base was situated.
“Ah, all those instant noodles snacks… and my skillets.”
“And the cola.”
“Ah.”
“Stop sighing and take the time to rest,” Xu Jiaoqin told them, seeing their sighing.
However, she too felt a bit worried after speaking.
The petty boss should have left, right?
That supermarket was no ordinary place, and neither was the boss who probably would not have come to harm.
Yet, the idea inspired someone.
“So could we maybe go and salvage things from the supermarket?!”
There weren’t many great things left at the base, scavenging there was like opening a blind box, with a nine out of ten chance of finding nothing.
But the supermarket…
It had so much stuff.
“What are you daydreaming about?” Xu Jiaoqin scolded him with a head smack, “The base asks us to salvage goods, and to put it broadly, those goods belong to the base. What does scavenging the supermarket count as? It’s not even within the base’s premises, and whatever we salvage would still have to be handed over to the base…”
Xu Jiaoqin was a person of strong principles, the supermarket owner had helped them by providing medical supplies that saved Monkey’s life, she could not be ungrateful.
“Alright. I just… really felt like having some instant noodles.” The scolded team member rubbed his head, not at all wanting to eat the base’s dry rations.
Hard enough to knock someone out.
Before trying the supermarket’s instant noodles, he thought they were decent, but after, what they had was garbage.
“Work hard, salvage more, later ask the person in charge for some gold bars, wait for the rain to stop, and the water to recede, maybe the goods from the supermarket aren’t washed away, we can exchange them for something tasty.” Xu Jiaoqin also craved instant noodles; she had actually exchanged for them several times before, but later, without the gold bars, she could just sincerely accept the base’s tasks and endure the base’s suffocating dry rations.
Preparing to exchange for gold bars after finishing a few jobs and spend at the Galaxy Supermarket.
But the gold bars hadn’t arrived, and damn it, the base got flooded.
The people at the base were becoming less and less reliable, not even noticing that the safety period had passed.
Wasting so many resources.
And having these superpower users go out to look for supplies, for resources.
“Captain, you’re just painting us a picture,” the team member looked mournful, with such heavy rain and deep water, the entire supermarket might have been washed away.
Whether the supermarket was still there after the water receded was not even certain.
“Picture, picture, picture, you just want to eat a pie,” Xu Jiaoqin was unapologetic and bestowed another chestnut.
“Ouch!”
Despite the teasing, after finishing the fish head soup, they had to keep diving into the water to salvage items.
By the time they finished and returned, it had already grown dark, they had to be careful not to bump into anything while swimming.
What do you think?
