Chapter 85: Dried Meat
Chapter 85: Dried Meat

And so it continued until the water level receded and the sun appeared.
Wang Huifang figured out a way to find some work.
But, it was unknown whether it was because she had eaten too many green mushrooms, she remained listless at work, resting after only a little effort.
The Supervisor, seeing this, thought she was slacking off.
He instructed the person serving meals to give her less.
...
Wang Huifang already received less food than the others, but Gu Honghua, upon seeing this, still came to get her share.
Gu Honghua was doing the same work as her.
Gu Honghua had a bit of cunning; she slacked off when the Supervisor wasn’t looking, but as soon as he came by, she pretended to be working hard.
The Supervisor was fooled by her act; in comparison to Gu Honghua, Wang Huifang seemed even more like a slacker.
Whenever the Supervisor saw her, he had to scold her a few times.
Gu Honghua would then fan the flames beside her, and Wang Huifang, being a bit simpleminded, couldn’t detect any of it.
The Supervisor wasn’t initially that angry, but once Gu Honghua stoked the fire, his anger flared up.

With the Supervisor upset, Wang Huifang’s already difficult life became even harder.
Gu Honghua still went to her for food.
Gu Honghua came out to work, but her precious son didn’t want to move, so now when Gu Honghua received food, she had to give two-thirds to her beloved son.
She herself would eat only one-third.
The food they received was already meager; minus two-thirds, how could Gu Honghua be satiated?
Then she set her sights on Wang Huifang.
Wang Huifang was very gullible.
All she had to do was pretend to feel a bit faint while working, and Wang Huifang would become extremely anxious. Then by cleverly mentioning her own hunger and insisting on continuing to work,
the Supervisor would think she was working hard, and Wang Huifang would feel sorry for her, willingly offering to share her food.
Two birds, one stone.
Wang Huifang genuinely cared for her Sister Gu and did not hesitate to share her food.
Thus, Gu Honghua ate her own one-third and also the two-thirds given up by Wang Huifang.
Wang Huifang, after receiving her food, could only eat one-third.
Eating less and working more,
Wang Huifang eventually became the one to faint.
But since the Supervisor already thought she was slacking, he viewed her fainting as a deliberate ploy, an act.
He woke her with a single slap.
Wang Huifang could only bear the discomfort and continue working.
Watching this, Gu Honghua felt very pleased inside.
What a fool.
Doing her part in raising her son.
Wang Huifang led a difficult life, but Liu Piaoxu, who had followed her sister, was living quite happily.
Liu Piaoxu lived with her sister now. When her sister went hunting, she would stay with the other sisters of the Cheetah Team.
The sisters all liked her, often played with her, and gave her delicious snacks.
Although her sister often went hunting with the Cheetah Team, always returning covered in the scent of blood, she still felt that life was delightful.
Now she could eat her fill every day, not having to go hungry like before when her sister brought home food.
She no longer had to listen to Gu Honghua’s complaints about her wasting food.
Life was too good; sometimes, it seemed so good that it might all be a dream.
If it were a dream, she wished to continue it for a long, long time.
“Piaoxu, go sort out the vegetables,” Bai Yuanyuan called out to her.
The people from the Cheetah Team were about to return, and they needed to prepare meals for the whole team. Bai Yuanyuan was extravagantly planning to cook swamp cabbage that she had bought from Galaxy Supermarket the day before.
Originally fresh and crisp, the swamp cabbage had wilted after a day and turned a bit yellow.

The weather was too hot, everything edible was prone to spoilage.
“Okay, Sister Yuanyuan,” Piaoxu obediently replied.
She was now doing what she could with the Cheetah Team.
Like picking vegetables, making fire, washing dishes…
There actually weren’t many opportunities to pick vegetables, as the Cheetah Team rarely went to the supermarket to buy them, since in this weather, they spoiled too easily.
The Cheetah Team, although they had plenty of Crystal Cores, still couldn’t bear to see the purchased vegetables rot and go to waste.
Most of the time, it was to celebrate, like when the Cheetah Team returned from a hunt, they would prepare them a welcome-back feast.
The welcome-back feast was actually just rice with a side of stir-fried greens, stewed meat, and, if possible, a tomato soup.
Those of us who stayed behind to look after the place usually didn’t eat meals, but drank more rice porridge.
Even though the Cheetah Team brought back a lot of rice, they were used to being frugal and couldn’t bear to eat rice every day.
Most of the time, they only ate rice before going out on a mission with the base and again after returning.
At all other times, they had to drink porridge.
With porridge, sometimes it was just rice porridge, sometimes a few vegetable leaves were added, and sometimes some dried meat.
They all preferred to drink rice porridge and vegetable porridge.
They didn’t really like the porridge with dried meat.
The porridge with dried meat had a gamey taste; they felt it sullied the purity of the rice porridge.
So, they only added dried meat once, and after drinking it, they never wanted to add it again.
How delicious rice porridge was.
Liu Piaoxu was quick and skilled at picking vegetables.
During this time of hers, Bai Yuanyuan made a tomato and egg soup and stir-fried some sliced meat. Once the vegetables were ready, she took over and stir-fried some water spinach, even adding garlic to it.
It turned out fragrant, the green water spinach garnished with white specks of garlic, so tantalizing that even Bai Yuanyuan, the great chef, couldn’t help but sneak a taste.
After Bai Yuanyuan snuck a taste, she saw Liu Piaoxu looking at her with wide eyes.
“Here, you have some too,” Bai Yuanyuan offered, stuffing a piece into Liu Piaoxu’s mouth.
Liu Piaoxu gobbled it down in a flash, not even tasting it.
“Alright, we’re on the same side now, don’t go ratting your sister out,” Bai Yuanyuan playfully winked at her.
Liu Piaoxu nodded and zipped her lips with her fingers.
“Our Piaoxu is so well-behaved. I’ll treat you to some chocolate later,” Bai Yuanyuan had been frequently visiting Galaxy Supermarket these days, sometimes to buy vegetables, other times to mooch off the air conditioning and snacks.
Su Yinhe was very generous to her, often sharing snacks with her.
But after mooching off so much, Bai Yuanyuan felt a little embarrassed and bought some herself.
“That chocolate is so tasty, it even has a molten center,” Bai Yuanyuan said, finding herself salivating at the thought.
“Okay. Thank you, Sister,” she responded.
“Such a good girl,” Bai Yuanyuan affirmed.
After they finished cooking, it wasn’t long before the Cheetah Team, who had been out for several days, returned.
Aside from Monkey, everyone else returned unscathed, bringing back a lot of dried meat.
Only Monkey’s hand was wrapped in a bandage larger than his head.
Why was it always Monkey?
When Bai Yuanyuan saw him, a bizarre thought popped into her head.
She remembered that last time it was Monkey who got injured, wasn’t it?
Even though Monkey’s hand was hurt, it didn’t affect his eating; he ditched the chopsticks and buried his head straight into the bowl, inhaling the food like a storm.
Having been out for so long, in the early days, they had canned goods bought from the supermarket, but then they were left gnawing on jerky day after day.
But that’s what happens when you’re hunting mutant animals.
These Superpower Users were responsible for hunting mutant animals, while the support staff was tasked with making jerky, which then became their sustenance.
This hot weather made drying meat all too convenient.
Only, this jerky, without a hint of salt and poorly cleaned, was just gamey and foul-smelling when chewed.
What do you think?
