Chapter 84: Chapter 084 The Rescue Team Finally Arrives

Peng Sanye and Su Shu had not been chatting long when a villager hurried back from outside to report that rescue troops were making their way through the blocked roads to enter the village.

Both were overjoyed and went along with the others to arrange the welcoming of the rescuers.

Su Shu hadn’t expected the rescuers to arrive so quickly, and he breathed a sigh of relief. As long as the mountain road was cleared, other matters would be easier to handle.

When the villagers heard that the rescuers were clearing the road and would soon arrive, everyone was thrilled.

Su Shu entrusted Xiao’ai to a trustworthy person and freed up his hands to help out. The remaining able-bodied people of Peng Village, led by Peng Sanye with tools in hand, went to the blocked section of the mountain road to assist the troops on the other side in clearing the way.

They knew that their advanced age might not contribute much, but every bit of effort could clear the blocked road a minute sooner, allowing the outside world to come in a second faster.

...

Peng Village was not only waiting for rescue and treatment for these remaining hundred or so people, but there were also dozens of villagers still trapped deep in the mountains who needed assistance.

On the other side of the blocked mountain road,

the local Garrison Troops’ rescue team, officers and soldiers drenched in sweat, were working at full strength to clear the road.

The rescue commander shouted loudly, “The people on the other side are waiting for our rescue. Everyone, hold on, keep holding on! If we push harder for one more minute and open the road sooner, the support troops behind us can come in. Do we have the confidence?!”

“Yes!” Countless soldiers shouted in unison!

The determination on the other side inspired the villagers on this side. Peng Sanye’s eyes grew moist, and he swallowed hard twice. Calming the excitement in his heart, he said to the surrounding villagers,

“Those on the other side are young men the age of our children. We still have our arms and legs intact; we can’t let them do all the hard work. We must also put in extra effort! Can we do it?”

“Yes!!!”

After a night of turmoil, the aftershocks in the Peng Mountain Region had almost subsided, with the epicenter not being nearby. Thanks to the collective efforts of the rescue troops and the villagers of Peng Village, the rescue operation was a success in a little over three hours.

With the arrival of the rescue troops came all-around medical aid. The medical personnel and emergency medicines they brought were beyond what Su Shu’s reserves could compare to.

With a strong support system in place, Peng Village’s local doctor finally was able to relax. He went in and took out the last box of reserved medicine, handing it over to the leader of the medical team.

The group captain of the medical team was named Luo, Luo Zhang, who, since the earthquake, had rushed back to his unit that very day to wait for rescue mission orders. He eventually became the team leader of the rescue squad heading toward Peng Mountain in Province D.

Following a Garrison Troop into remote areas was an urgent and dangerous mission. As he made his way, his mood, like that of group captain Zhao Kang of the Garrison Troop, grew heavier.

In the direction of Peng Mountain, there were a dozen counties and villages nearby, with nearly two-thirds reporting disaster cases of varying severity. Due to the region, the health and medical conditions were behind those of towns and cities. Coupled with transportation issues, these factors added many difficulties to the rescue efforts. News from the epicenter indicated severe casualties and injuries.

The sudden onset of a once-in-a-century disaster in Province D now gripped the hearts far and wide. Their rescue destination’s situation was not the worst, but as they traveled, both military officers and medical personnel were deeply shocked by the scenes they encountered.

Yet, they could not stop even for a minute to mourn those who had died in the earthquake, because they bore an even greater responsibility.
