Apocalyptic Disasters: Carrying a bun and hoarding supplies

Chapter 202: Like a rat

"Hurry up!" Su Hu jumped out of the car as soon as Lei Qian’s car disappeared around the corner. He felt like a little rat who was hiding from the big bad cat. His face was flushed red with shame and embarrassment as he turned to look at Bai Qingshi, who was refusing to get down.

"There is no need for me to get down, is it?" Bai Qingshi asked nervously. He looked around the street and even though there were no more zombies, he was afraid that Bai Meiyue and Lei Qian might have missed one and it might attack him when he was not paying attention.

When Su Hu heard Bai Qingshi’s question, he was furious. However, he still pursed his lips and spoke in a calm voice, "You and I are the only ones who came here to collect supplies; if you don’t come with me, how will I carry all the supplies? What if we waste our time and more zombies appear in this street?"

Su Hu was going crazy. Why didn’t he know that Bai Qingshi was such a selfish and cowardly man? In the past, he used to admire this man very much; he used to think that Bai Qingshi was man among men but now —

He stared at Bai Qingshi, who was hiding in the car like a quail and didn’t know what to say. Was this man the same Bai Qingshi that he knew?

What Su Hu didn’t know was that the reason Bai Qingshi was so lawless and arrogant in the past was because there was a backer behind him. With Mister Huang protecting him, Bai Qingshi didn’t have to worry about anything and there was also Bai Meiyue.

If something went wrong, Bai Qingshi knew that he could use Bai Meiyue as a human shield.

But now that there was no Mister Huang and Bai Meiyue to back him up and protect him, how dare he act as arrogant as he used to in the past?

When Su Hu saw that Bai Qingshi was not getting out of the car, he pursed his lips and said, "If you don’t want to do it, Uncle Bai, then it’s fine. We can go back and I will return with someone else."

"No!" Bai Qingshi immediately refused. He glared at Su Hu and said, "Are you stupid? If we bring those people with us, wouldn’t we have to share our supplies equally with them?"

Bai Qingshi might have become a big boss because of the little schemes that he pulled under the orders of Mister Huang. But he still was as petty as he was when he had no money to enjoy his life.

These supplies were the key to a full stomach; how could he share them equally with others?

"Then what do you want to do?" Su Hu asked with a sigh.

"Can’t you do it alone?" Bai Qingshi asked as he hugged his small baseball bat that he brought with him. He was nervous and scared; even though he couldn’t see any zombies, he didn’t want to step out of the car.

"I can’t carry so many supplies," Su Hu felt his patience run dry. He said angrily, "Do you even know how much time it will take if I continue to go in and out of the supermarket, bringing one sack at a time? By the time I am done, the sun might have set!"

There were five to six sacks of rice and three sacks of flour; even though it was very little when compared to the number of survivors in the house, these supplies were better than nothing.

At least they could save some privately and cook extra bowls of rice to fill their empty bellies. This was why Su Hu agreed to come here alone but after seeing the cowardly appearance of Bai Qingshi, he suddenly regretted it.

If he knew that this man had the guts of a chicken, he would have rather stayed at home than come outside.

When Bai Qingshi heard Su Hu say that he couldn’t do it alone, he bristled angrily and called him useless but no matter what he said, Su Hu stayed put and asked the man to come down and help him.

In the end, Bai Qingshi had no choice but to get down and help Su Hu get the things from the supermarket.

However, when he saw Bai Qingshi drop the sack of rice, saying that he had a bad back and asked him to help, Su Hu regretted it even more. If he had known how useless the Bai family was without Bai Meiyue, he would have never betrayed her.

"Achoo!" Bai Meiyue sneezed. With her hands flying to her nose, she sniffed softly.

"Are you alright?" Lei Qian asked her. "Did you catch a cold?"

"No," Bai Meiyue shook her head with a frown. She glanced at the small building where another farmers’ market was usually held and said to Lei Qian, "It seems like someone came here before us; the meat and vegetables are almost gone."

"Well, even a small amount of meat is meat," remarked Lei Qian as he looked at his team members who were collecting supplies after dealing with the zombies. "It’s better than having nothing to eat."

Though the farmers’ market was more or less ransacked, the previous survivor still had some conscience and left one-third of the supplies behind, which was better than nothing.

Lei Qian then turned to look at her and asked, "Do you want something?"

Bai Meiyue wanted to say ’no’ but suddenly her heart moved a little and she said to Lei Qian, "I want some cherries. See if you can find some."

When Lei Qian heard her response, his eyes lit up and he snapped his fingers before saying, "Don’t worry, I will get you the best cherries."

He then turned on his feet and headed inside the building and Bai Meiyue watched him silently. Though she had no desire to tell Lei Qian about Bai Cai, she still wanted her son to taste the warmth and care of his father.
