Chapter 119.1: Demon Sect Leader’s Holy Maiden Concubine (11)

When Jia Ling returned, Gu MingYue was playing with Jia Luo on the deck. He stepped out of the sunset’s lingering glow, his bearing as elegant as a crane soaring over autumn waters. The distant mountains were shrouded in a faint golden glow, their verdant depths dark and sombre, stretching high and low in an unbroken expanse that cast long shadows over the lake.

Gu MingYue tossed aside her little puppet and embroidered ball before running over to him, pouncing into that blackness with a thud. Her enthusiasm and eagerness perfectly matched the saying – A day apart feels like three seasons. Her mind was simply too young to comprehend shyness or reservedness, hence her actions always reflected her thoughts.

The icy fabric of the man’s robes pressed against her soft cheeks, and his thick palms stroked her head. But his touch wasn’t as warm as usual; it was tinged with a chill, and his movements were sluggish.

She looked up in confusion, only to be drawn into those dark eyes and lose herself in their depths. What kind of eyes were those? They were deep and dark, so black that not even a single star could be seen within them.

The man’s thin lips moved slightly, forcing a curve to his lips even though there was no smile in his eyes. Perhaps he didn’t want to scare her, but his expression was stiff and forced, the smile pale and eerie. If she really possessed a child’s mind, she would probably have started crying in fright.

“Were you good today?” He took Gu MingYue’s hand and walked into the painted boat, one step at a time. His voice was no longer as clear and refreshing as a stream, but rather hoarse and weary.

“Miss slept until noon.” Jia Luo answered from behind him. “After eating, she played all day without crying or causing any trouble.”

Jia Ling made a soft sound of assent and sat down in the armchair in the front hall with Gu MingYue in his arms. He squeezed her hand gently, then more firmly, then again gently, all without speaking.

His jade-like face was pale as snow, his hair black as ink. A pair of long, pretty eyebrows were lightly furrowed, as if in worry. When he looked down, long lashes that were both thick and curled cast a faint shadow on his eyelids. The two thin lips that had once seemed to be painted with the finest rouge were now as pale as paper.

Gu MingYue sat quietly in his arms like a porcelain doll.

Jia Luo had served the leader since she was young and was familiar with his every emotion. So, she quietly stepped out of the hall and began to quietly pick up the toys scattered across the deck.

The night sky was a giant net that stretched across the heavens, covering everything in its reach. The candlelight in the front hall flickered, and from time to time, there was the soft crackle of flames. Jia Ling held the woman in his arms, pinching her delicate hands lightly or more firmly. He said nothing, and Gu MingYue didn’t dare speak either. The furnishings in the hall were all brand-new: a jade table, a wide, bone-inlaid beechwood couch with a gold-embroidered cushion, a four-panel screen of nanzhu wood with glazed mountain and river decorations, and all sorts of exquisite porcelain… The old furnishings had long since been pulverized into dust by the man’s rage.

When Jia Ling learned that Gu QingHui had escaped, he’d found an excuse to punish the monks on duty that day. His dungeon was a secret; so how could he not be furious when someone who had been locked up disappeared without explanation? After returning to the painted boat, he had gripped Gu MingYue’s delicate chin with a cold expression on his face, his eyes like sharp knives as he glared at her for a long time. Only then had he ground out through gritted teeth, “How did such a useless thing manage to escape?!”

Gu MingYue knew that this must have triggered him and caused him to experience an episode again, hence she quickly responded by shivering in fear and rolling her eyes back before fainting.

And so, the furnishings in the front hall were left to bear the brunt of Jia Ling’s rage. He nearly tore the entire place to shreds. Gu MingYue lay on the ground, listening to the wind whip past her ears and the deafening rumble as her heart trembled in her chest.

The man who had just destroyed everything still seemed to be in a rage. Gu MingYue felt a gust of wind rush toward her, and her lashes fluttered slightly. She hastily circulated her internal energy to protect herself, inwardly thanking herself for having exchanged martial arts from the System. Otherwise, she would have been in serious danger. But that gust of wind stopped right at her chest, not moving another millimetre. She could hear Jia Ling groaning in pain as he carefully lifted her into his arms…

“She ran away, but don’t worry, I’ll catch her and bring her back. Don’t worry…” Jia Ling murmured to the unconscious Gu MingYue, gently caressing the bruise he had left on her chin with his fingertip, as if trying to wipe it off. And to her surprise, his movements were surprisingly soft and tender.@@novelbin@@

Gu MingYue sighed to herself in her heart. Judging by Jia Ling’s expression, it was unlikely that Gu QingHui would be caught.

Gu ZhenKai had lost two of his beloved daughters, one of whom had barely managed to escape. He would definitely be much more protective of Gu QingHui this time around and hide her somewhere safe to make sure that the demonic sect could never find her.

And in actuality, her wild guess was accurate.

Jia Ling received word that the Gu Family had hidden Gu QingHui somewhere, and though he had the ability to capture her and bring her back to Taisu Island, he would not be able to do so without knowing her whereabouts.

The truth was that Jia Ling was anxious, and his heart was searing like it was being fried in oil. But Gu MingYue was calm, as she was the one who had planned everything.

She had a plan in mind and she took her move, so she did not have any other choice but to continue moving forward with no way to retreat.

Still, regardless of how she looked at this issue, it would still be in her best interests if Gu QingHui never returned.
