As a Fisherman, My Fish Can Level Up

Chapter 56: Successful Rescue

Chapter 56: Chapter 56: Successful Rescue

Chu Mingcheng had grown up by the sea, so naturally, he knew how to swim.

However, his swimming skills were not exceptionally good, just at the level of an ordinary person, which made rescuing someone quite difficult.

But the moment he entered the water this time, he experienced a feeling he had never had before.

According to the current autumn weather, although the daytime temperature could reach 25 degrees Celsius, entering the water should have felt distinctly chilly.

Yet after he entered the water, he felt very warm, with no sensation of temperature loss at all.

Previously, when he swam in water, he could distinctly feel the resistance, but now he found that with a kick of his legs and a strong stroke of his arms, he could dart forward several meters.

Moreover, in the somewhat murky water, he could keep his eyes open normally, as if a layer of flowing water was protecting his eyes, allowing him to see several meters ahead without discomfort.

As for whether he could breathe underwater, he also gave it a try.

He found that even without using his nose to breathe, he did not feel oxygen-deprived when holding his breath; he could sense that there seemed to be oxygen entering his lungs.

However, the amount of oxygen provided this way was not substantial, as if it couldn’t meet his oxygen needs in the water.

It could only extend the time he could hold his breath underwater; if previously he could hold his breath for two minutes, now he estimated it could be at least half an hour, or even an hour.

Then he tried to breathe through his nose…

“Cough cough cough…”

Chu Mingcheng quickly surfaced, having choked on water.

It seemed this underwater breathing ability had to be taken with a grain of salt; he hadn’t grown gills like a fish, it just greatly extended his breath-holding duration.

But that was enough for now, he re-entered the water, swimming rapidly in the downstream direction where the firefighter had sunk.

Moving with all his might, he shot through the water like an arrow, and in just half a minute, he had reached the vicinity of the lifeboat.

But he didn’t plan to show himself just yet, deciding to locate the person first.

Chu Mingcheng continued to search for the sunken firefighter in the water, moving freely with this ability, truly like a fish in water.

However, the Ou River was too wide and large, and the murky water limited visibility, which undoubtedly increased the difficulty of the rescue.

If a normal, proficient swimmer were to look for someone, or if someone were to be fished out from a boat, the person who had drowned would certainly have been lost.

Luckily, his speed in the water was so fast he could catch fish; a big green fish, frightened by him, hurriedly fled, only to be overtaken by him in no time.

Chu Mingcheng didn’t bother with the fish; three minutes later, he successfully found the firefighter being carried downstream by the current.

It had been about seven or eight minutes since the firefighter had gone under, but the actual time of drowning must have been shorter, so there was still a good chance of saving him.

Grasping the firefighter, he kicked his legs and swiftly swam to the surface, then dragged him toward the shore.

A sharp-eyed man on the bridge suddenly noticed something in the water in the distance and shouted in surprise, “Look, someone is saving the firefighter over there!” @@novelbin@@

Following his shout, everyone nearby turned their attention to that direction.

“Wow, it’s true; the firefighter who had drowned was just saved!”

“That’s great; otherwise, it would feel like a life wasted.”

“Let’s hope everything’s okay; after being underwater so long, I wonder if he can still be revived.”

The fire department captain in charge on the bridge naturally saw this scene as well, and he was delighted. He immediately used a walkie-talkie to command the firefighters on the lifeboat to head there.

It was at this moment that Jiang Luoluo, who had been oblivious until now, realized that Chu Mingcheng, who had been beside her, was missing. The car was there, but he was not, yet the figure dragging someone to the shore in the distance was so familiar that it stunned her.

She looked under the bridge and surely found the clothes and mobile phone on the shore, rushed down to pick up the clothes and the phone, and ran towards Chu Mingcheng.

Chu Mingcheng was currently performing compressions on a firefighter, pressing out some water, but he hesitated a bit when it came to performing artificial respiration. Fortunately, the lifeboat had arrived.

There were three firefighters plus the diving girl on the boat, making four in total, one of whom jumped off the boat before it had fully reached the shore.

Chu Mingcheng quickly cleared the space, aware that he lacked professional emergency rescue training.

The police on the bridge, other firefighters, and medical staff all ran towards the shore.

But the first to arrive was Jiang Luoluo. Chu Mingcheng saw her approach him and, without uttering a word, stare blankly at him. For some reason, he suddenly felt a bit guilty.

“Uh, I’m a bit cold, could you please give me my clothes?”

Jiang Luoluo’s chest heaved up and down, unsure if it was from running there or from being upset by Chu Mingcheng’s actions.

She wanted to scold him severely, but they were just ordinary friends; she had no right to scold him.

In the end, after taking several deep breaths, she handed the clothes back to Chu Mingcheng, saying, “I just hope you think things through before you act. Don’t just rush into situations.”

“What would your parents do if something happened to you?”

Rescuing others was a noble deed, but Chu Mingcheng was still somewhat at fault as others weren’t aware of his “cheat.”

The currents of the Ou River were swift; even a skilled swimmer attempting such a rescue might have ended up in more trouble themselves.

“This young lady is right, young man, you were indeed too reckless, but fortunately, you’re unharmed!” At this moment, as others from the bridge arrived, the fire chief heard Jiang Luoluo’s words and immediately agreed.

After expressing his agreement, he tightly grasped Chu Mingcheng’s hands: “But I still want to thank you for saving my team member; his daughter was just born and cannot afford to lose her father.”

“Actually, I was confident in my actions; I’m a strong swimmer and even if I hadn’t found this comrade, I would have been able to return safely,” Chu Mingcheng said with a modest smile, explaining.

Of course, his words were also meant for Jiang Luoluo, but the young lady wasn’t quite convinced, giving him a rolled eye upon hearing them.

However, the emergency was ongoing, and everyone present was focused on the situation as the rescue personnel shifted from firefighters to medical staff.

After continuous compressions and artificial respiration, the drowning firefighter suddenly coughed, spat out some dirty water, and took deep breaths, reviving.

Everyone present showed a smiling face and cheered, especially the firefighters, who were visibly moved as the recovered man was their close comrade.

Jiang Luoluo looked at the shivering, remorseful girl huddled at the side. She really wanted to scold her and show her what others had to endure because of her actions.

Yet seeing her miserable state, Jiang Luoluo eventually softened and turned her head away, choosing to ignore her.

The rescued firefighter still required further examination at the hospital, so he was quickly placed on an ambulance and sent off along with the girl who had jumped into the river.

The fire chief didn’t leave; he again expressed his gratitude to Chu Mingcheng, insisted on taking his contact information, and said he would bring his team to express their thanks in person later.

A few police officers also took his contact details, mentioning that today’s incident would be reported and he would later receive a commendation for his act of valor.

Chu Mingcheng was actually reluctant; he disliked complications, but given the special circumstances and the fervor of all involved, he couldn’t refuse.

Eventually, claiming he needed to change his clothes as an excuse, he managed to leave swiftly with Jiang Luoluo.

As Chu Mingcheng led her away, Jiang Luoluo noticed that her heartbeat was a bit faster.

Looks are the most direct charm a person can have, but it’s just more likely to elicit a favorable response from others.

Jiang Luoluo had originally seen Chu Mingcheng as just a regular male friend, someone she liked but had not yet felt attracted to.

She wasn’t love-struck, naturally not going to fall for someone just because they were good-looking.

The current state of Chu Mingcheng was disheveled; his clothes were drenched, his hair was messy, and he even got muddy while dragging the man to the shore.

Yet even in such a state, he seemed exceptionally radiant and charming to Jiang Luoluo.

It was a kind of safety that allowed one to lower their guard, offering a great sense of security.
