Ascending the Demon Realm

Chapter 2: What Kind of Explosive Opening Is This?!

This was another reason I wanted to join the Interdimensional Affairs Bureau—to uncover this dark smuggling ring and sever their human trafficking pipeline.

The capybara parents who saved me years ago gave me a new lease on life. Now, as a human myself, I felt it was my duty to rescue my own kind.

Human trafficking never ceased. Demons would devour their own kind if there was demand; humans were no exception.

My capybara parents were actually undercover officers in the demon realm's police force, though they worked in logistics. The latest demon-eating case had occurred just last month. Dad secretly showed me crime scene photos through his connections—boxes filled with demon cores and multiple containers stuffed with deceased demon corpses.

If demons smuggled human flesh into their realm, it was only natural that demon meat would be trafficked to ours. These demons lacked both humanity and demonic integrity, becoming scourges across realms!

I swore to eradicate them from all three realms with my righteous hammer.

The spirit vehicle finally moved forward. An aerial gate of jade materialized ahead, carved with ancient divine runes. Beyond it lay my dream destination—Eastern Sovereign University, the demon realm's top institution.

I urgently grabbed the "No-Desire" Spray from my bag and doused myself thoroughly.

"Pfft—"

My little brother Capy tried squirming away.

I yanked his ear, keeping the adorable prepubescent close. "Stay put, squirt. Don't want you getting harassed."

"Here, let me spray you too."

Inheriting our parents' zen capybara genes, he didn’t resist despite the ear-pulling.

Demons had complicated biological cycles. Different species matured at varying rates, leading to mismatched "physiological cycles"—that's what we politely called their mating seasons here. Naturally, higher species like dragons and tiger clans better controlled these primal urges. But rodents? Some started their cycles back in kindergarten.

This natural process carried no stigma here—as normal as farting or menstruating. During cycles, demons struggled to control their urges to seek physical contact. Self-discipline played a key role—weak demons succumbed easier to bestial instincts.

Hence the popularity of "No-Desire" Spray. Developed by Taiyi Bioengineering, this pheromone repellent sold everywhere signaled "Not Interested" in neon lights. Spraying it made all demons avoid me like the plague. The stench (undetectable to humans) worked like catnip in reverse. Bonus: It masked my human scent while saturating me with capybara pheromones from Mom's formula.

Result? A permanent two-meter exclusion zone around me since childhood. No demons near, no questions asked.

As vehicles descended through swirling clouds, the university emerged—a breathtaking fusion of ancient architecture and 5D surrealist structures cascading from heavens to sea.

I hyperventilated, mentally chanting: I'm a capybara. Chill. Alive? Cool. Dead? Whatever. Professional slacker. Unflappable even if the sky falls.

The mantra backfired, anxiety spiking until I crushed little brother You in a bear hug. Bliss.

"Can I bring You to campus?" I nuzzled his fluffy head.

Mom's serene gaze turned lethal—aimed at You. Even our perpetually calm brother stiffened.

"Xiao Yao," Dad turned uncharacteristically stern. "Never room with demons. Serious warning."

We capybaras stayed calm but weren't pushovers. I nodded obediently.

"Release your brother." Dad hardened. "Stop rubbing against him."

Pouting, I relinquished my cuddle buddy. You suddenly produced a 20cm plushie of himself, eyes still glued to his game.

"Custom-made?" I gasped.

"Mhm." He nodded, controller clicking.

I smothered him in kisses. "Best brother! I'll support you after graduation!"

"Xiao Yao!" Our zen parents panicked, ejecting me before speeding off like fugitives.

Watching their fleeing vehicle, I scoffed. You're entering your cycle, not me. What's the big deal?

Deep breath. Time to become one with capybara zen.

Gods know how hard this was. A hothead pretending to be chill? Like when school bullies mocked me—I itched to punch them!

But no. Couldn't blow my cover or trouble the parents. So. Damn. Frustrating!

Clutching my bag, I faced the majestic campus. Final challenge: Eastern Sovereign University. Getting into the Bureau would be my ticket to the human realm.

Turns out all three realms shared one truth—everyone's obsessed with government jobs.

Something suddenly plummeted past me.

CRASH!

A heavy impact shook the ground. Warm liquid splattered my face as a severed arm grazed my cheek.

Every curse I knew failed to capture this horror.

Bloodshed on orientation day?!

What kind of explosive opening is this?!

I stood paralyzed, looking down at the shattered body of a girl. Blood gushed from her mouth, drenching her exquisite features. Her dilated brown eyes reflected unimaginable agony. Her right arm ended in a ragged stump.
