Chapter 7: House Aldreth – A Nest of Serpents
House Aldreth was a place of power, politics, and quiet wars—a nest of serpents, each coiled and ready to strike. It was one of the oldest noble houses in the kingdom, renowned for its prowess in both military might and cultivation. Although its domain lay within a low-tier kingdom, House Aldreth’s influence stretched far beyond its borders. Yet with great power came great enemies—even within the family.
At the head of House Aldreth stood Duke Varian Aldreth, Sylas’s father—a man of absolute authority, both feared and respected inside and out. His philosophy was simple: strength determined worth. His children were nothing more than pieces on a chessboard, and he had no interest in those who showed no promise.
Sylas had met him only once—on the day of his naming ceremony. The Duke had barely spared him a glance. In that fleeting moment, Sylas understood that being ignored was far better than being crushed outright.
The duchess, Lady Evelyne Aldreth—Sylas’s mother and the Duke’s first and highest-ranking wife—once commanded the most power in the household. But she was not alone. Four other wives, each hailing from powerful families, vied for the Duke’s favor and for their children’s futures.
Lady Selene – Mother of Rael Aldreth, Sylas’s strongest and most dangerous half-brother. Cold, calculating, and ruthless.
Lady Isolde – Mother of the twin brothers, Dain and Kieran Aldreth, only a few years older than Sylas; clever and mischievous.
Lady Mirea – Mother of Cassius Aldreth, the quiet one whose silence masked a dangerous potential.
Lady Lilia – The youngest wife, whose son Elias Aldreth—only a year older than Sylas—already displayed prodigious talent.
Each woman plotted in the shadows, ensuring her own son received the best resources and training. Though once Lady Evelyne’s influence had reigned supreme, Rael’s rapid ascent had begun to erode her standing.
Sylas had five half-brothers—all older than him—and each regarded him differently:
Rael Aldreth (8 years old): The prodigy—strong, arrogant, and perilous. Sylas’s greatest rival.
Cassius Aldreth (7 years old): The silent observer, watching more than he spoke.
Dain & Kieran Aldreth (6 years old, twins): A mischievous duo, intelligent yet not overtly hostile.
Elias Aldreth (1 year old): Already showing early promise, a stark reminder that even in infancy, his brothers were more advanced.
Every one of them was, for now, stronger and more experienced.
On the surface, Sylas’s days seemed uneventful. Too young to partake in training or the intricate politics of the household, he nonetheless absorbed every detail. Every furtive glance, every whispered conversation between the wives, brothers, and servants was recorded in his keen mind. He noticed how his mother, once revered, was now treated with growing disdain; he saw Rael stride by with the arrogance of a declared heir; and he caught the secretive whispers of the other wives when they thought no one was listening. In House Aldreth, even a baby was not spared the ruthless calculus of power—weakness was a death sentence, and no one expected him to survive.
Sylas understood that he had only two choices: remain weak and be crushed, or find a way to become strong in secret. To defy the grim expectations of his house, he would have to do something no one anticipated—cultivate, even before his energy fully awakened. This clandestine pursuit of strength would be his next challenge—a hidden battle fought beneath the watchful eyes of a family that considered him expendable.
In the deadly game of House Aldreth, survival depended on outsmarting those who wished him harm. And Sylas had already resolved that he would not remain prey in this nest of serpents.
What do you think?
