Chapter 460: Chapter 431 Chittagong (1)
“Check your belongings, put on your life jackets, and help those around you make sure the safety buckles are secure.”
The safety officer stood in the middle of the inflatable boat, reminding the medical aid team members again and again to check their safety measures.
“Isn’t anyone coming to meet us?”
Lin Xinyue asked Gu Yu while securing her suitcase to a fixed buckle nearby.
Gu Yu shook his head, “I don’t know, but it looks like no one is coming for us.”
Watching the second inflatable boat quickly descend from the deck, splashing into the sea, Gu Yu was also puzzled.
“The notice I got was that the port’s barges are in short supply; if we wait for one, it could take days, so they let our aid team leave ahead of schedule.”
Ge Zhengxiang, fully armed and holding a gun in his arms across from them, spoke up.
“Uh… shouldn’t they have arranged a barge for us in advance?” Gu Yu still didn’t understand; their mission to aid the refugee camp was by invitation, and yet here they were, with no one to receive them.
This seemed a bit preposterous.
“Hmm, I don’t know what the situation is.” Ge Zhengxiang nodded; he was just a squad leader and wasn’t privy to more detailed information.
All he knew was that his mission was to protect the medical aid team.
“Squad leader, we are ready over here too.” Wang Long called out from the inflatable boat five meters away, while signaling everything was okay.
Three boats, thirty medical aid team members, plus his squad of twelve, totaled forty-two people—the whole team for this mission.
“Prepare to depart!” Ge Zhengxiang called out to the driver.
Engines of all three boats started simultaneously, with white foam churning at the stern of each boat.
Meanwhile, on the deck above, Du Zhenhua stood with a group of officers at the railing, watching them.
“Reporting, my team is ready to depart; request permission!”
Holding down the call button on the walkie-talkie, Ge Zhengxiang looked up at the officers and shouted.
“Permission granted, you are allowed to depart! I wish you a triumphant return!”
Du Zhenhua’s steady and concerned voice came through the walkie-talkie, prompting everyone to stand tall with chests puffed out, a sense of honor welling up inside them.
Each of them was representing their country, and they were engaged in a noble cause.
Ge Zhengxiang gestured to the drivers of the boats on either side, and then shouted, “Depart!”
“Salute!”
As the boats began to move away, Du Zhenhua called out with a stern expression, and dozens of soldiers saluted the medical aid team from afar.
The speed of the boats picked up, with everyone holding on tightly to the safety buckles with one hand and grasping their companion’s side with the other to prevent themselves or their companions from falling.
The strong sea wind blasted against their faces, and Gu Yu could taste the salty flavor of the sea in his nostrils and mouth.
He wanted to speak, but his words were swallowed by the wind before he could utter them.
He could only gesture to Lin Xinyue, telling her to hold on tightly to his arm hooked onto the safety buckle.
Lin Xinyue understood his gesture and clung closely to him.@@novelbin@@
Watching the surging sea around them, she felt scared; if they fell in, even with life jackets, it would be very dangerous, wouldn’t it?
“Everyone, pay attention to your belongings.”
In this tumultuous environment, Ge Zhengxiang showed the composure befitting a naval soldier.
His eyes carefully scanned everyone and their belongings tied down at their feet, and if any suitcase or similar item became dislodged, he would kick it back in place.
Just as the boat had left the Ark about two miles behind, threading through the traffic lane of the giant cargo ships, a police speedboat came speeding toward them.
“Here comes someone, slow down.”
Seeing the fast-approaching police speedboat, Ge Zhengxiang shouted to the driver against the wind while signaling to the other two boats.
The three inflatable boats promptly reduced their speed.
Surrounded by giant cargo ships, the people on the boat felt as if they were in a world of colossi; their inflatable boats seemed as modest as straw huts compared to skyscrapers.
Although they kept a safe distance, the sensation of enormity was still intense.
“Be careful, the surface might look calm, but underneath are hidden currents; if anyone falls in, it would be impossible to save them.”
Ge Zhengxiang’s gaze stayed fixed on the approaching police boat, while reminding everyone to stay safe.
“থামো, এখনই থামো…”
As the speedboat was about fifty meters away, the loudspeaker suddenly blared out incomprehensible gibberish.
“What the hell are they saying? Can’t understand a word.”
A soldier sitting to the left of Ge Zhengxiang complained.
“It means they want us to stop.” Wu Shaohan suddenly spoke up from across the way.
“Impressive! You can understand that?” Ge Zhengxiang turned his head, looking at Wu Shaohan in surprise.
“I studied a little bit of Bengali, enough to understand everyday phrases, but I don’t speak it well.”
Wu Shaohan smiled, without a hint of arrogance.
“Let’s all stop and wait for them to come closer.”
Now that they knew what the other side was saying, Ge Zhengxiang quickly signaled for all three inflatable boats to stop—you had to obey the rules in someone else’s territory.
The three boats came to a silent halt amidst the behemoths, waiting for the police speedboat to close in.
“They’re not going to arrest us, are they?”
“You’ve got to be kidding! We came here to help, and not only did no one greet us, but now we might get arrested?”
