Chapter 490: Chapter 459 Entering the Refugee Camp (Part 1)
Tonight there was no moon, so this part of the isolation buffer zone was especially dark.
Within a ten-kilometer radius, if one didn’t rely on electronic devices and the lights of the pickup, it was nearly impossible to see one’s own fingers before their eyes.
Arriving at the midsection of the buffer zone, one could only distantly see the specks of light from the checkpoint behind them.
It was then Gu Yu realized why those refugees he hadn’t encountered before had fled this place.
Having entered the isolation buffer zone, in such darkness, the lights of the checkpoint became the last hope.
People, like moths to a flame, instinctively moved towards the places where there was light.
Despite the refugee camp being not far ahead, the red light casting down from the sky gave one glimpse enough to feel it was an ominous sign.
“A little cold,” Lin Xin mumbled in Gu Yu’s embrace.
Gu Yu wrapped his arm around her to pull her closer, but the heat transfer was very limited with the protective suits between them.
“Wait until we stop, it’ll be much better then,” he said, gently squeezing Lin Xin’s shoulder.
“Mhm,” Lin Xin hummed, then leaned on his chest to continue resting.
“Infrared shows movement on the left side of the road ahead, everyone stay alert,” Distant through the intercom attached to the belt of the soldier holding the machine gun, the voice rang out, making everyone in the truck sit up straight, their eyes anxiously watching the pitch-black sides of the road.
The road was flanked by overgrown weeds, giving the impression that anything unknown could burst out at any moment.
The machine gunner remained highly vigilant, his gaze briskly sweeping over the surrounding environment constantly.
Simultaneously, the vehicle’s side lights turned on, instantaneously illuminating a five-meter range on both sides of the road.
Any person or animal attempting to attack the convoy would be exposed under the bright lights.
“Suspicious individual approaching, stay on guard, any abnormality permits a defensive shot,” Ge Zhengxiang’s stern voice came through the intercom once again.
The machine gunner, without any hesitation, immediately loaded the prepared belt of ammunition onto the machine gun.
No one doubted that if an attack occurred, he would instantly turn the attackers into a sieve.
Inwardly, everyone was filled with a sense of safety.
Indeed, when out and about, the sense of safety that comes with military power was the most substantial.
The pickup continued to drive forward, churning up billowing dust and ash.
“It’s refugees, hold your fire, keep on high alert,” the voice through the intercom transmitted the command in real time.
The machine gunner’s expression relaxed slightly, but his eyes still watched the surroundings like those of a hawk.
Before long, the people in the pickup saw the refugees they were warned about by the leading vehicle.
They were a group of ragged individuals, both men and women, mostly teenagers and young adults, carrying worn-out backpacks and walking towards the direction of the checkpoint.
Their pace was quick, as if fierce beasts were chasing them.
In the instant when the vehicle and the group of refugees brushed past each other, Gu Yu and the youngest-looking boy amongst them coincidentally made eye contact.
Despite being only fourteen or fifteen, his eyes were dull and lifeless; perhaps it was the glare from the pickup’s lights, but a ripple stirred in his deep, pool-like eyes.
Gu Yu saw fear, confusion, and longing.
It was a look that simple adjectives could not encapsulate.
It was the fleeting fluctuation of life intertwined with death.
The boy thus quietly made two seconds of eye contact with him before the pickup drove off, and he vanished from Gu Yu’s sight.
Watching the group disappear into the darkness, Gu Yu didn’t need to guess what they wanted to do.
Apart from escaping the quarantine line, he couldn’t think of any other reason for their presence here.
But is escaping the blockade really that easy?
The gunshots before had proven the answer.
Perhaps it was just escaping from one hell to another, but without real experience, these people would not believe it without trying.
Outside the blockade line might be a wonderful, orderly world.
But… it was not their world.
“We’re about ten minutes from the refugee camp now, everyone get spirited, make sure to check your protective suits and speak up immediately if there are any issues.”
The lights and fires ahead were getting closer, and the machine gunner turned around and addressed everyone huddled together.
“Are we almost there?”
Lin Xinyue, who had been half-asleep, muddledly raised her head.
“Almost,” Gu Yu said with a gentle nod.
His left hand touched the hand ax strapped to his back; he was actually quite nervous.
Nobody knew the situation in the refugee camp; they knew nothing about the conditions inside.
“I want to emphasize again, put your own safety first! None of you is more important than the rest! I hope everyone can return safely to Ark!”
Ge Zhengxiang’s voice came through the radio, stressing solemnly.
It was clear that he too was worried about the safety of this mission.
Although the armed squad was strong, this was ultimately the refugees’ territory. As the largest refugee settlement in the world, there were over a million Rohingya refugees here.
A nine-person armed team, plus thirty doctors with almost no combat ability—if they really clashed with a million refugees, even with an unlimited supply of bullets, they would be overwhelmed by the sheer number of people!
“Once we’re in the camp, keep it low-key, and don’t make a sound. Let’s get to the humanitarian medical aid station first,”
Said the machine gunner, who was likely not new to this place, offering advice to everyone.
Everyone nodded their heads, keeping them bowed.
Ten minutes passed quickly, and the Pickup convoy soon reached the outer limits of the camp.
Shacks as far as the eye could see, and these so-called shacks were simply cobbled together from a few mud deflectors, waterproof tarps, or discarded composite boards.
Lighting was a rare commodity here; most had lit a bonfire outside their shacks for illumination, warmth, and even cooking.
People gathered around the fires, chatting or eating some unidentifiable food.
The arrival of the Pickup convoy clearly disturbed the atmosphere of the camp, with many people standing up to watch this fleet of Pickups flying red flags.
Most of them didn’t know which country’s flag it was, but they knew it wasn’t Bangladesh’s nor their own country’s.
Some sat back down next to their fires, disappointed, while others watched curiously.
Some children wanted to get a closer look, but the heavy machine guns mounted on the Pickups caused them to think twice.
Most of these children were only eight or nine years old but had already developed a fear of firearms.
It was hard to imagine what they had seen and what they had gone through.
“So pitiful…”
“Yes… these kids, they’re so thin they’ve become unrecognizable.”
“Such rudimentary living conditions, and so many people… It’s hard to imagine what their daily lives are like.”
“…”
People on the Pickup began whispering to each other.
They didn’t dare to speak loudly because of what the machine gunner had said earlier.
“It’s pitiful, right? But if you got off, they would strip you bare, leaving not even a scrap of bone,”
The machine gunner spoke ominously.
Everyone was startled, and a chill ran down their spines.
What do you think?
