Chapter 144 Regina 4
"My king, it seems the tyrant has realised Regina was not the true ruler, you must escape at once, you death will lead to an imbalance in the continent." Commander Uda said, sensing that Vell was close.
"Hmm, its not a secret that I am the true king, people just ignored it since Regina was running everything. It unfortunate but we brought this upon ourselves. That day, when I watched them big up that poor man, I knew by the look in his eyes, it was not over. We denied him access to our city and beat him up. So tell me commander, do you think we are in the right?" The king stood up and removed his crown.
Uda could not reply, deep down he knew the king was right. "But still-"
"Enough, bring me my sword. I will face him with honor, if I fall then that is my destiny." Uda hesitated but and order was an order. He brought the king's sword, a holy weapon only found in the tower.
'I heard this weapon can kill even dragons, with it, I am sure the king will win this without issue and yet... I still worry.'
The king gripped his sword tightly, its blade shimmering with a faint, holy light. Uda stood beside him, his armor creaking as he shifted his weight. "Are you sure about this, sire?" he asked, his voice low.
He nodded. "I've hidden for too long. It's time for that to end." His hands trembled slightly, but he forced himself to stand tall. "If I fall, make sure the people know… I tried."
Uda clapped a hand on his shoulder. "You won't face him alone."
The throne room doors groaned as they slowly opened. Vell stepped inside, his shadow stretching across the marble floor. His eyes flickered with dark energy, and a cold smile played on his lips. "Well, well. The king finally grows a backbone."
The king raised his sword. "I won't let you destroy my kingdom."
Vell laughed, a harsh, echoing sound. "Your kingdom? It's a rotting corpse. I'm just here to bury it."
The king's chest tightened. He knew Vell was right—the kingdom had flaws, deep ones. But he also knew it was worth fighting for. "Then fight me," he said, his voice steady.
Vell lunged first, his fist crackling with black mana. The king parried with his sword, the clash sending sparks flying. Uda joined the fray, his blade clashing against Vell's shadowy attacks. The room shook as their powers collided.
Vell's laughter turned to a snarl. "You think a rusty sword and a loyal dog can stop me?" He swung his arm, sending a wave of darkness that knocked Uda to the ground.
The king rushed forward, his sword glowing brighter. "Uda, stay back!" he shouted. He swung with all his strength, the holy light cutting through Vell's shadows.
Vell staggered, but his smirk returned. "You're stronger than I thought, old man. But not strong enough." He summoned a wall of darkness, pushing the king back.
The king's breath hitched. His arms ached, but he refused to yield. He remembered the faces of his people—the farmers, the children, the soldiers who'd trusted him. "I won't let you win," he growled.
With a roar, he charged again, his sword blazing. Vell met him blow for blow, their duel echoing through the palace. The king's strikes grew slower, his legs heavy. Vell's attacks grew fiercer, his laughter echoing.
Then, in a single, desperate moment, the king found a opening. He swung his sword upward, the holy light erupting in a blinding flash. Vell's shadow shattered, and he fell to his knees, his body smoking.
The room fell silent. The king stood over him, his sword trembling. "It's over," he said, his voice hoarse.
Vell looked up, his smirk villainous. "That tickled."
His laughter twisted into a roar as dark tendrils erupted from his body, wrapping around the throne room pillars. "You still don't understand, do you? Your sword is just a tool—it can't erase your sins!"
The king stumbled back, his arms shaking. Memories of all his wrong doings flashed—that day, he was the one that ordered for Vell to be turned away and even when they used forced to beat him up, he did not stop it or show any signs of regret.
Uda charged, but a shadowy claw slammed him against the wall. "Stay down, dog," he hissed.
Panting, the king lowered his blade. "You're right… we wronged you." His voice cracked. "We let fear rule us. But this hatred—it's devouring you. Let it end."
Vell was silent for a moment, he could not believe his ears, "what the fuck did you say?" He began squeezing the king tightly, "what do you know about hatred?" He continued until the king's face started to pale. "do you have any idea what that bitch of yours did to my people? ABSWER ME!!" He threw the king through the wall, sending him crushing outside in the plaza, where people could see him for who he really was.
He looked at Uda, "what a stare, do you really want to kill me that badly?" Uda was trying his hardest to break free but the shadows were too strong.
"I...will kill...you." He managed to say despite his body being crushed.
"Cute but weaklings should know their place." He snapped his neck and went through the crack. "Now then, things are about to get very fun." He jumped and landed where the king did. He found people already gathering , curious on what was going on.
"Is that the king?" One civilian asked, carrying a basket of fruit.
"What is going on, why is he injured?"
"Are we under attack?"
"Where has the king been anyways?"
"Now that you mention it..."
People were talking some worried and some doubting his rule. Vell appeared beside him making people move back in fear. He gabbed the king's head and raised him up for all to see. The king coughed blood, his vision blurring as Vell shook him like a ragdoll. The crowd gasped, some stepping forward, others hiding behind market stalls. Children were pulled back by their mothers.
"This is your beloved king, and this will be his death sentence so I want all of you to watch closely. This is what happens when you treat people like insects." He summoned his sword, ready to cut the king's head off but before he could do anything, the masked men appeared, one of them tried to punch him away but Vell reacted swiftly, making distance between them.
"It's you." He adjusted his grip around the sword, "why are you stopping me?" His mana was manifesting more, he was ready to go.
The leader stepped forward, "We meet again, though, it seems not on good terms." He looked back at the king. "You cause chaos where ever you go, why is that?"
"Chaos?" Vell spat. "I'm cleaning up their mess!" He pointed his blade at the king, who lay gasping on the ground.
The masked leader shook his head. "And you believe that destroying things is the way to go? Look around you, these people are scared of you, not only are you destroying their home but you just threatened to kill their king. So tell, who is really the bad guy here?"
Vell looked around and noticed that people were indeed scared of him but.... "hahaha...so what? Do you think I give a shit about these people? I don't even know them. What I do know, is that he and his people have hurt my people for no reason, so why should I care what they think?" His patience was wearing thin, "look, I have no issue with you so just move and let me do what I must do."
"I can't do that. This may be a small territory but this man is still important, if you kill him, that would be seen as disrespectful and all the kings on the continent will come for you. Is that what you really want?"
Vell's fingers tightened around his sword hilt, his mana swirling in frustration. His glare flicked between the masked leader and the trembling king on the ground.
"Let them come," he growled. "I'll tear through every single one of them if I have to."
The masked leader sighed, as if disappointed. "Revenge is a cycle. You kill him, they come for you. You kill them, more follow. And in the end, what's left? Nothing but blood and ruin."
Vell's grip twitched. "Spare me the lecture." His voice was sharp, but a flicker of doubt passed through his mind. He spent a year planning his revenge, dreaming of this moment—of seeing the king broken, of making him suffer as his people had suffered. But now, standing over him with the power to end it all, why did it feel... hollow?
The crowd held their breath, waiting for his next move. Some watched in fear, others in curiosity. The king, barely holding onto consciousness, coughed weakly.
Vell exhaled sharply. "Tch. This isn't over." He swung his sword, not at the king, but at the ground beside him. The force sent cracks through the plaza floor, making people stumble back.
The masked leader nodded. "Wise choice. I like you, you may seem evil but I know you are just doing this because of your people."
Vell turned, his dark energy retracting slightly, but his rage still simmered beneath the surface. "Don't mistake this for mercy," he said. "I'll deal with him my way... when the time is right."@@novelbin@@
