Chapter 148: Amyra is Suspicious

But what did heightened rationality actually mean?

Does it numb my emotions like that one skill from one of my favorite novels?

He recalled the badass skill from one of his favorite novels in his past life.

The MC had a similar skill which honestly made him quite broken.

But he didn't feel anything different.

He looked at the skill again.

It's a passive skill, so the effect should always be active.

Does that mean it doesn't actually numb the emotions?

Then what exactly does it help with?

Perhaps taking rational decisions while ignoring the emotions.

Is that the reason why I didn't hesitate about deciding to accept Jeremy's offer this time?

It needs further testing.

After Alden was done looking around his status screen, he calmly looked at the surrounding space again.

Now how do I get back again?

"Hey system, send me back."

Nothing.

No response except silence.

What the hell?

How am I supposed to go out again?

Let's see.

Alden looked around again, this time a bit more carefully.

Still, nothing was there except the big golden book and a bright red orb of energy swirling violently.

Huh?

Since when was that here?

Alden had seen the Eclipse Codex, but the energy orb wasn't present when he had arrived.

Do I have to touch it to get back or something?

He quickly reached a decision and walked toward the orb just beside the Eclipse Codex.

The distance looked a bit too far, but as soon as Alden took a step forward, he was already in front of the orb.

It seemed as if distance was irrelevant in this space.

The glowing orb of bright energy was swirling violently.

Alden could even feel a slight pull coming from it. He instinctively understood what it was.

It was his Supreme Ability.

So it's also here, huh?

But why was it hidden when I first arrived?

Whatever, not like that's any help in this situation.

So this definitely is my soul space, huh?

Alden concluded, as he knew supreme abilities existed in the soul and not the body.

He gently touched his finger to the orb.

Swish!!?

The orb started turning brighter and brighter until it completely blinded Alden.

As the light from the orb swallowed him whole, Alden felt his consciousness gently unravel… then reweave itself somewhere far more familiar

__

The next thing he knew, Alden was back on his bed.

He felt the soft mattress beneath him. His eyes felt dry. His body felt numb all over.

He slowly opened his crimson eyes.

The sudden light assaulted him, making his vision a bit blurry at first.

Slowly, his eyes adjusted.

He had expected to be met by the same old room.

But he saw something… someone standing close to him.

"Amyra?" he muttered.

What's she doing in my room?

His mind was still not adjusted. He felt groggy.

"What are you doing inside my room?" Alden asked. His voice didn't hold any warmth.

"I was following a suspicious person."

What now?

A suspicious person?

Spirit pearl?

As soon as he heard her, he snapped his head toward the table where the Spirit Pearl was situated.

Thank God!

The Spirit Pearl didn't look any different from a normal marble with some decorations on it…

So most people wouldn't even know what it was.

"What suspicious person?" he asked, still suspicious of Amyra's intentions.

She is speaking about a suspicious person. But everything in the room is the same as it was before I left. What's her goal?

Still, Alden decided to listen to her.

"I saw someone suspicious in the lobby," she explained, voice smooth. "So I followed them. They came toward your dorm room. When I arrived, the door lock was broken. I came in to stop them, but it was too late—they'd already left."

Her face looked calm.

"What did the person look like?" he asked.

"Their features were cloaked in the shadows."

Hmm, shadows?

Alden still didn't fully trust Amyra. But he still thought about who it could be.

The first name that came to his mind was obvious.

Shadow Witch.

Seles.

Yeah, that btch could definitely do something like that.*

I'll think about it after I deal with Amyra.

Alden's numbness had long since worn off, and he felt warmth in his right hand.

He held a hand, which he had failed to notice before.

"Thank you, Princess," he said.

"But why are you standing so close to me?" he asked. "And why are you even holding my hand?"

Alden again felt his suspicion increase.

Still, he released her hand.

"That thing," she said, her hand pointing to the Spirit Pearl, "just as I was about to chase after the intruder, it suddenly started glowing—ominously."

"Then it floated above your chest."

Alden followed her gaze toward the Spirit Pearl.

Damn it.

Why did it have to glow in Amyra's presence?

Still, I could somehow recover from it.

It's a magic alarm clock.

Yeah, that excuse could work.

But just as he was about to utter it, Amyra spoke again.

"It's a Spirit Pearl, isn't it?"

Alden's muscles fully tensed. His eyes turned cold.

How did she know?

That's a dumb question.

Instead... What should I do?

He spread out his mana in his surroundings, feeling shadows around the room.

He accepted Amyra was not a Villainess.

But that didn't mean she had to be a good person. He had seen her blush like an innocent maiden.

So had he seen many actresses roll out similar expressions in dramas.

For all I know, she could've been acting back then.

If she decides to fight me, I'm not going to hesitate.

Many would think he was just being too paranoid, but Spirit Pearl was something people would kill for.

It gave a completely normal person a chance to form a bond with a powerful spirit. And if used correctly, it could even increase their potential.

Alden was ready to summon his Sword of Chaos at a moment's notice.

He already had an escape plan.

His pendant.

If anything goes awry, I could just use teleportation to escape.

All three calculations happened within seconds.

He soon asked her.

His voice this time was completely devoid of any emotion whatsoever.

"What do you want, Princess?"

Amyra simply smiled, which was a stark contrast to her usual cold self.

Still, Alden didn't relax.

"I want to propose a deal. I'll keep your secret safe," she said, her voice almost a whisper. "In exchange, I want you to do one thing."

Obviously, she wants something.

He frowned.

"What deal?" His hands twitched, and his eyes were still cold.

What's she after?

The Spirit Pearl?

Or something worse—like trying to collar me with some slave contract?"

In any of the cases, Alden wasn't going to entertain her. He would rather fight than accept any of those.

He waited for her request.

Amyra's face heated up slightly.

Alden felt confused by this reaction.

Why's she reacting like that?

"Be my friend." That's all she said.

"Huh?"

What?

Alden's body, once tense, seemed to deflate slightly in surprise.

Not because he trusted her.

Just because it was such a bizarre answer.

"What the hell?" he muttered unconsciously.

Even when Amyra dropped that ridiculous request, he didn't feel panic—just mild confusion.

So this is what Voidheart means.

Amyra just met his gaze, steady and sincere.

"Be my friend," she repeated.

There was no calculation in her eyes. No demand behind the words.

Just a strange… warmth he couldn't quite place.

"That's all."
