Chapter 84 Virtual Reality [2]
Alden's vision soon cleared up as the white room was gone now.
In its place, a massive battlefield was before him.
The battlefield was filled with many corpses, and Alden could smell a faint metallic scent in the air.
The academy wanted to give the students a look at how it feels on the battlefield.
A weak-hearted student might just puke looking at the scenery.
Many corpses were sprawled on the ground, with some even rotted, and a pungent smell was present in the air.
Even Alden was feeling a bit nauseous.
Everything felt too real, as if it were reality.
He was currently alone, as his opponent was not present yet.
The air was eerily still.
Soon enough a translucent blue notification appeared in front of him.

[Match Start Countdown: 3… 2… 1…]
---
Across the arena, Bran Hayworth materialised.
The guy looked like a pack of bones.
He looked as if he would fly away with a single gust of the wind.
His weapon?
A sleek black rapier.
His face had a cunning smile as if he were scheming something.
Bran cracked his neck, rolling his shoulders.
"You're Alden Draven, huh?"
"You look too weak." He commented, looking at Alden. "And here I was expecting you would be stronger."
Alden sighed internally.
He would have taken it seriously if it had come from some bulky-looking guy.
But this one…the one who himself looked like a skeleton.
You've got to be kidding me.
Alden didn't even bother responding.
He adjusted his stance, hand resting lightly on the hilt of his katana.
[Match Start!]
Bran wasted no time. He enveloped his body in a wind element as he rushed towards Alden.
His rapier pointed straight at Alden's heart.
Alden stood still.
He could end this fight within moments if he used his Supreme Ability.
But he didn't wish to do so.
He wanted to take advantage of this test to check his raw combat power without relying on his ability or his spells.
Although they were also part of his powers, he still wanted to check how powerful he could be without them.
He had already decided he was solely going to use his sword art in this battle.
That would also help him train his sword art in real combat.
At least until he was pushed to the limit.
He didn't like to lose after all.
And he had no intention to do so as well
Alden could clearly see the movement without even activating the spirit domain.
He still didn't move as the rapier was coming closer to him.
He just stood still, his hands resting on his hilt in a quick draw position.
At this moment his mind was calm without any distraction.
Bran had a smirk on his face as if he had already won. 'He was just a weakling after all.'
'He must've been lucky to rank up so high in the entrance test.'
These were the thoughts of Bran as he saw Alden standing still.
Alden could clearly read what was going on in his mind, but he didn't care.
He was currently utmost focused on the rapier coming for his heart.
Just as the attack was inches away from piercing his heart.
Alden moved.
He drew his katana with the intent to deflect the rapier.
He hadn't used his sword technique. This was just a normal quick draw which he had mastered while practising his sword art.
This swing didn't even have an ounce of mana.
Still, his draw was too fast even without mana reinforcing it. Enjoy exclusive content from My Virtual Library Empire
His katana flashed.
As it deflected the rapier cleanly.
Or that should have happened, but Alden missed the rapier completely.
Alden realised his mistake instantly.
Bran had altered his rapier's trajectory with the faintest manipulation of wind, turning his original thrust into a deceptive feint. It was simple. And yet, effective.
He was not just an ordinary mob after all. He was ranked eleventh for a reason.
Bran came from an ordinary noble family which specialised in wind elements. Although he didn't have any special abilities, his mastery over his element was high.
He had used his mastery over his element to slightly alter the path of his rapier.
His combat technique was simple; he used his mastery of the wind element to create feints.
Alden, however, was cursing as he saw the rapier now coming for his neck.
'Fck,'
What did he expect?
He had just started using a katana, and perfecting quick draws was not child's play.
And more importantly, even if he had mastered quick draw, it was only against an immovable dummy and not real people who can move.
He wasn't the protagonist of some novel after all.
Or was he?
The smirk on Bran's face widened as he saw Alden's desperate attempt miss his rapier. 'Idiot, what was he even trying to do?'
Alden realised it was too late to dodge completely.
He moved his body at the very last moment as he barely managed to twist his body, but his left shoulder was pierced.
He felt the pain.
A burning sensation spread through his body.
But who was he?
He didn't even flinch as blood trickled down his shoulder.
'Fck, why did they have to make it so real?'
The blood was similar to how it was in reality, having a faint metallic smell.
Should I just use my ability to end it in one go?
Nah.
I will try that if I am going to lose only.
Bran grinned, "Is that all, Mr Top Ten Ranker?"
Alden was feeling very annoyed by this sack of bones, but he still controlled his emotions.
Alden exhaled slowly.
Fine by me.
He shifted his stance.
Time to get serious.
He was going to use his sword art for real now.
The first trial swing had already cost him an arm. His left arm hung limp, but he adjusted his stance.
Bran noticed the shift, his grin widening. Oh? He still has a fight in him?
"Come on, then."
Wind surged as Bran accelerated, his speed nearly doubling.
He rushed at Alden again with his increased speed.
But this time Alden didn't rush it.
He calmly circulated mana within his body and sword to make it resonate with atmospheric mana.
The process was quite quick, as he had trained very much for the last two days, resting only when he couldn't even lift his body.
The world slowed down for him.
He saw Bran coming for his neck this time.
Alden decided the location of his attack, he wasn't just going to deflect the attack now… he was going to end the battle.
Bran had already pissed Alden off enough.
He flared his mana as his sword accelerated.
He saw the pathway cleanly passing through Bran's neck.
'Sever'
He thought in his mind before he followed the pathway.
Bran's rapier was just inches away from piercing Alden's neck when his movements stopped.
For a brief second, his eyes widened.
He tried to move—tried to react—but his body refused to obey.
A thin red line appeared on his neck.
His mouth opened as if to speak, but no words came out.
Then—his head rolled off his shoulders.
Bran's body staggered, his fingers twitching, as if his mind still refused to accept what had happened.
Impossible...
Before he could even process the pain, his entire body vanished into light.
[Winner: Alden Draven]
[Healing all the existing injuries]
[Student, please prepare for your next battle…]
Alden swingy his katana, clearing the invisible remnants of his kill before smoothly sheathing it.
He exhaled.
"Next."
What do you think?
