Chapter 42
41, The New House
Xie Shuyue and Xie Hanhan shared a yard, which normally only saw Xie Hanhan’s younger sisters stay in it, and it was kept very clean. Everything inside was carefully chosen; the room wasn’t small and had everything that was needed, but it was still smaller compared to Xie Hanhan’s main house.
Xie Shuyue remained silent, but her maid murmured softly by her side.
At this time, Xie Shuyue didn’t know that Xie Hanhan wasn’t the Marquis’s biological daughter but an adopted one, so she was extremely cautious and dared not speak loudly.
But to Xie Zhinuan, none of this mattered.
Her house had been repaired, with blue-gray bricks and black tiles, a courtyard wall two and a half meters tall that enclosed the area around it, with filled-in soil. Stone slabs had been laid inside the house, and wooden boards had been nailed to the roof to prevent ash from falling and to add beauty.
Even the walls were plastered cleanly, the heated brick bed in the middle was built, and the furniture had all been moved in. The bedding and fabrics would be moved on the day of relocation.
Xie Zhinuan had gone to the town twice with Old Yuan, buying bowls, teapots, plates, small stoves, casserole pots, and also pans, spatulas, hoes, and shovels that had been ordered ahead of time. She had also bought hundreds of jars of various sizes and several large water tanks.
She had dug a well and a small pond in her new home and planned to raise a few fish; she had already planted lotus roots in it.
When these goods were brought back, the villagers of Xiaohe Village were stunned.
A woman who couldn’t remember anything had purchased so many things…
Xie Zhinuan had exchanged for small Copper Coin and settled the wages at Old Yuan’s house, one by one.
Some families, with several members working, could earn several taels of silver. As for the two buns provided daily, they were settled based on the cost of one wen each. These people worked hard, and she paid generously and promptly without any delay.
However, after all this, she had only fifty taels of silver left in her hands.
Fifty taels, Xie Zhinuan felt, were quite good. After all, she had a home of her own. She planned to buy some grains, spices, and yellow wine and then she could move in.
The morning of April 7th.
After breakfast at the Yuan Family’s, Xie Zhinuan took Routuan to her new home because someone was delivering fruit trees that day.
There were several orange and grapefruit trees, and they were already in bloom. One day, she had secretly poured a bucket of Spiritual Spring Water into the well, and after tasting it later, found the water delightfully sweet. She used it to water a dying plant, and when she checked on it the next day, the plant was thriving. Only then did she realize the power of the Spiritual Spring Water.
That was why she bought several orange and grapefruit trees, planning to plant them in the backyard. Come autumn, when the fruits ripened, she would have something wonderful to eat.
If the orange trees took root, she also wanted to plant grapevines or other fruit trees. Any type of fruit tree, as long as it was available, she wanted to plant some.
Xie Zhinuan felt that she was indeed very ambitious.
She swept the house with Routuan in tow, as all the furniture had been varnished. Although the varnish from ancient times differed from modern varnish and didn’t smell bad, it actually had a faint fragrance, which Xie Zhinuan particularly liked.
She swept the floor, humming a tune, while Routuan scampered about, full of joy.
Xie Zhinuan reached out to rub its little head.
The young pup, only two months old, ate so well it was chubby, and its body trembled as it walked.
“Is anyone there?” a woman’s voice called from the door.
“Yes!” Xie Zhinuan responded, running to open the door.
Behind the woman was her husband, and on their ox cart were a few orange trees.
“The two grapefruit trees are quite large, they’ll be delivered soon!”@@novelbin@@
“No problem, help me move the orange trees in first, I’ll plant them in the backyard!”
