Demon Hunter and His Cabin

Chapter 32 - 32 Foster Care

Chapter 32: Chapter 32 Foster Care

The room was filled with warmth, with a sumptuous meal laid out on the dining table; it seemed Adeline had prepared for quite some time for this meal.

Aside from Amanda, whom they had not seen for several days, Roger also saw a chubby little boy sitting next to the dining table.

Roger had seen his picture; he was Adeline’s youngest son, Little Jack.

Amanda looked so thin she was nearly unrecognizable, her once radiant red hair had lost its luster. She seemed to have stabilized a lot emotionally, and upon seeing Roger come in, she managed a weak smile.

Roger nodded but didn’t say anything.

Some memories can only be smoothed over by time.

...

“Let’s eat first, or it will get cold,” she said.

Adeline took her seat at the head of the table and devoutly said her prayers. Little Jack went through the motions, while Amanda remained completely indifferent.

It was clear she was not a believer.

“Finally, we can eat!”

Little Jack seemed carefree, stuffing food into his mouth while casting curious glances at Roger.

The atmosphere at the dining table was heavy; too much had happened recently, and aside from Jack, everyone seemed preoccupied with their own thoughts.

After finishing the steak on her plate, Adeline put down her knife and fork, coughed lightly, and upon hearing the sound, Roger also set down his utensils, wiped the grease from the corner of his mouth, and looked up at her.

“I have something to announce.”

Adeline glanced at Roger, and then her gaze swept over Amanda and Jack.

“This matter concerns Roger.”

“I’m sorry Roger, I lied about some things before.”

“In fact, we haven’t found any missing person information that matches your identity in the neighboring towns and districts.”

“Several days have passed, and the investigation still hasn’t made any progress.”

She looked at Roger with sympathy.

“I don’t know whether your parents met with misfortune in a shipwreck.” Hesitating for a moment, Adeline didn’t tell Roger that there hadn’t been any shipwrecks in the nearby waters in the past few months.

Roger, a living person, appeared as if he had abruptly emerged from the seawater, creating far too many questions in this case.

“You’re still young and without a guardian. According to the law, an orphan of disaster like you would be sent to a community welfare institution until adulthood when you could live independently.”

Adeline took hold of one of Amanda’s hands.

“Thank you, Roger, for everything you did in the woods. If it wasn’t for you, Amanda might… might never have come back.”

“I just did what I had to do,” Roger replied politely.

“Just like Greg said, only when faced with real danger can one’s true character be known.”

“On one hand, it’s out of gratitude, and on the other, I’ve genuinely come to admire your character during our days of interaction.”

“So…”

“Would you like to live with us?”

Roger was slightly taken aback. He had thought his only option was to go to a community welfare institution, but was Adeline suggesting something different?

“I’ve submitted a foster care application, and given my situation, it should be approved quickly. Until your real family finds you, you could live with us.”

In front of the dining table, Adeline drew an imaginary circle with her hand.

“To live together, as a family.”

“Would you like that?”

Having finished speaking, she squeezed Amanda and Jack’s hands, looking at Roger with a hint of nervousness.

Watching the sincerity flickering in the sheriff’s eyes, Roger hesitated only for a moment before nodding in agreement, “It would be my honor!”

He had been in this world for some time now, experienced Kant’s struggles, and witnessed the true affection of the female Murloc. Although his time was short, his experiences had been quite rich.

It was only with Adeline that he felt a long-lost sense of peace, as if he had returned to the ordinary world of his previous life.

“Welcome!”

Amanda smiled, showing her teeth; clearly, Madeline had discussed this news with her children in advance.

“That’s fantastic!”

“I finally have my own brother!”

Little Jack, however, was incredibly excited, “Next time Benny dares to bully me, you’ve got to stand up for me!”

He spoke boisterously, then immediately looked at Roger with a bit of concern, “Shouldn’t you eat more, though? Because you look too frail right now, and Benny’s brother is a big guy on the football team.”

Roger laughed nonchalantly, “Don’t worry, I can even chase away wild wolves!”

Roger’s gaze swept past Amanda’s face, who was standing with her arms crossed, “Don’t even think about it, I’m definitely older than you.”

“You’d better call me big sister.”

It was clear she was also very happy about Roger’s joining.

Amongst everyone’s playful banter, a delightful dinner came to an end.

After the meal, Adeline found Roger alone, and she laid out her plans for him.

Through her personal connections, she planned to place Roger in Baytown High School. This high school required four years of study, and Roger would need to join as a sophomore, while Amanda was in her junior year.

“Go to school?”

Roger was completely baffled by this.

With his previous life included, he had almost 10 years of not knowing what it felt like to sit in a classroom. Naturally, he instinctively rejected such a thing.

If he went to school, where would he find the time to practice swordsmanship and improve his physique?

This was something he absolutely could not accept.

But on this point, Adeline was incredibly firm. How could an ordinary person who didn’t study and attend college be of any use once they entered society?

Roger was just full of WTF, but all his struggling was futile. After negotiations, under the promise of maintaining good grades, Roger still managed to secure a substantial amount of free time from Adeline.

As for the grades?

Though Roger knew nothing about this strange education system, with the Concentration Potion, he was confident that he could undoubtedly be a top student in terms of learning.

On closer consideration, entering school wasn’t entirely without benefits. Systematic study of botany, chemical experiment procedures, and precise measurement methods all significantly helped his research in Alchemy Potions.

Additionally, there was the corresponding historical, geographical, and cultural knowledge. Mysteries were concealed within reality, and he was now full of curiosity about the unknown languages recorded in the Soul Transference Book.

If he could find some clues, then he would have a deeper understanding of the transcendent powers of this world.

What future is there in going to school?

Wouldn’t becoming a Demon Hunter and then impressing female sorceresses be more thrilling?

Hey? Something seems off. Why do such pure thoughts of mine always drift to pile drivers?

Could this be some kind of subconscious influence?

Someone shamelessly thought.

Night fell, and Roger climbed into bed early. Only when the entire house was silent did he change his clothes, sneak out the window, hop on his bike, and dashed away like a wisp of smoke.

What Roger didn’t know was that soon after he left, a tall figure stepped out of a car parked on the street. Watching Roger disappear into the distance, he wore a contemplative expression on his face. @@novelbin@@
