D.E.M.O.N.S: Getting Summoned Weekly isn't so Bad

Chapter 1757 Adventure Quests!

--- Kat ---

When Kat finished retelling her story she laid back and just enjoyed the sound of the rain for a few moments. She’d retold it a bunch at this point but it didn’t get any less crazy. Plus, she’d gone into extra detail about just how awesome and helpful Lily had been at the end. Turning her girlfriend into an embarrassed mess even in her Memphis form. Honestly, it had been nice to explain that all to everyone.

"It’s rather shocking to hear that you were responsible for saving a world and have that be the truth, perhaps twice over," said Gareth. Green was nodding along with him while laying across his legs.

"Yeah that shit is wild," added Kress. "I mean, the fact you can get so much stronger so easily is kinda bullshit but then again… it’s not like I went and saved a world personally now is it? I wonder… think Stan could ever do something like that?"

"Um… is that something you’d want?" asked Kat somewhat concerned. "I mean… yes if he wanted to it’s possible but… my regeneration gives me a big leg up and there’s no certainty he’d survive. Those types of missions are the ones that actually can be deadly you know?"

Kress winced but nodded. "Yeah I got that part… and well… it’s not like I don’t understand the danger. Hell we ended up doing a lot riskier things for training recently. Not sure if we’re on the cusp of Rank 3 or not yet, but we could be close,"

"Oh?" asked Kat. "What do you mean,"

"Well, to start off with we were morons," said Kress.

Nixilei cut in while wincing, "We asked Thyme for a bit of attention and we managed…"

"No, we were morons," Kress cut back in. Turning to face Kat he explained, "See, we wanted to take down a sea serpent. They’re not real dragons but they’re big fuck of reptiles that can breath enough water to destroy a boat is less then a second, or keep it in thing, powerful beams that slice everything they touch. "That’s not getting into the sheer physical might something like that has. Plus, it’s naturally more adept at moving both in and around the water. Like morons, we thought we could take it. Stan and I ended up on a bit of a boat ride around the island and spotted it after all. Once we’d finished with the vacation part of things, we asked Thyme to watch over us while we made the attempt,"

Nixilei was looking a bit sheepish at this point as Kress simply continued on. "So we sail off on this little boat and attack it. Instantly gets destroyed and now we’re all in the water. I manage to grab onto one of its whisker things and I’m trying to climb my way up. Nixilei gets taken out by a water blast and nearly drowns but Green saves her.

"Gareth isn’t doing much because he’d taken his armour along. So he was busy shoving that into his storage ring while I’m trying to climb up this whisker thing. It’s not hairy at all, more like an eel attached to this thing’s face. It was slippery and wet and I had to use my daggers to climb up it at all.

"Obviously it wasn’t so happy at this, and it kept whipping its head around to try and get me to back off. Gareth stabbed it in the stomach while it was busy with me and it didn’t do too much so he had to start chipping away at the scales. This got its attention and it sent a whole bunch of water at him.

"Green nearly got it in the eye while it was doing that, but she missed. Don’t blame her, it’s head wasn’t exactly steady at the time… and then well it started to get serious and I started to lose track of exactly what was going on with everyone after that point. In the end, Nixilei had to get her lungs repaired, I had my arm re-attached, Green had her foot umangled and Gareth… well he was mostly fine,"

"I’d lost most of my jaw and both hands," retorted Gareth.

"Yup mostly fine," said Kress with a shrug. "Especially after the healing,"

Kat… wasn’t really sure how to take that. "Right… um… did you kill it?"

"Oh no, not at all. We fought it for a while and it just retreated under the water. It’s when I lost my arm actually. Couldn’t hold onto it anymore without my arm. Thyme healed us… and then turned into an old lady to give us this long, disappointed stare. We… did not go hunting for anymore sea life after that. Nope, Green decided it would be best if we went and helped people to make up for attacking an ’innocent’ animal,"

"Well it was!" retorted Green. "We attacked it when it was just minding its own business! I get why, it was a monster and I agreed to it at the time. We felt like we needed to get strong, and I stand by that. Doesn’t mean we did a good thing though,"

Kress looked at her a bit weirdly. "Did you not hear why Thyme agreed to let us fight it? That thing was responsible for at least forty deaths that Thyme knew about for a fact. They were considering dealing with it themselves before we stepped up to the plate and I’m pretty sure Thyme killed it when they got my arm back,"

"Oh… huh… that… hmm…" Green mumbled unsure of what to say in response.

"Why did you guys think you could take it anyway? Like… I get it was Rank 2 but… that seems a bit much," said Kat.

"I think it was mostly my fault," sighed Nixilei. "I am unsure if we found a stronger then usual variant but I was under the impression that at Rank 2 there scales were not so tough. The boat thing was a foolish oversight, but the fight itself? I was expecting Kress or Green to be able to do real damage to it without overly much trouble. I was hoping we could work together to take it out. Perhaps bleed it over time… and it crushed us,"

"Were your other missions more successful at least?" asked Kat not sure she really wanted to pick at that open wound. Without seeing the thing herself there wasn’t really much she could say. Hanging out with Hunter for a few weeks might’ve improved her hunting ability… but not by that much. She couldn’t say for sure what they should’ve done other than ’not hunt the thing’ but that wasn’t a useful criticism.

"Most of them yes," said Nixilei with a nod.

"Do you include the cake incident in that statistic?" asked Kress snidely.

Nixilei flinched a little. "Technically we received a completion stamp and the guild accepted it,"

Kress rolled his eyes, "Yeah well I’m not sure I agree. Though… yeah most of the stuff we had to do wasn’t that bad. Culling a few wolf packs, that one mutated bear. There was also those thieves. That was actually pretty funny…"

Green giggled. "Ooo! Let me let me," Kress shrugged and made a ’go ahead’ gesture. "Right so, we were hired to find this pack of thieves that had been robbing caravans along the road. We weren’t really sure where to start canvasing the area for them because the there wasn’t much of a hint as to where they had set up.

"Except, on our way out of town we spotted this old farmer complaining about his carrots getting stolen. He was an old guy and well, we were trying to help out. So we offered to look into it for him. The assumption being that it was a bunch of Chitterers or perhaps some other low rank pest. But nope!

"As soon as Gareth here with his heavy armour stood next to the carrot patch the whole place collapsed dropping us right into the thieves hideout! They were buried up to their necks… and a bit more in a few cases. Caught red-handed with most of the loot and all because we were just trying to help out an old farmer,"

Kat grinned. "I imagine the famer wasn’t exactly happy with that,"

Green let out another round of giggles. "Oh not at all. He was pissed. Not just that he’d lost a good chunk of his farmlands because of the tunnelling but also because the reason his carrots were going missing? It’s because his great, great nephew was one of the thieves. He’d expanded an old childhood hide away to be the secret base and always had a weakness for carrots! So he was the one stealing them all!"

Kat winced, "Why wouldn’t he just ask?"

"He wasn’t meant to be in town," said Nixilei. "I investigated a bit and his family were under the impression he’d gone off into elven names to make a name for himself as an adventurer. They didn’t think he’d do too well, but he’d been sending back some funds so they didn’t fight for him to come back… well not before we caught him anyway. Old dude was not happy…"
