Chapter 264 Luxury In War.
Kelvin was just a single man in this battle that involved hundreds of millions of soldiers. He was just a small spoke on a small wheel in a very large machine.
He felt insignificant as he saw large boulders and dangerous spikes sail through the air towards him. He couldn't run or hide. He could only hope that everyone else did the job they were assigned to.
Fortunately, he wasn't disappointed so early into the fight. The surveillance, targeting, and control systems that Command was using to direct the combat bots were impeccable. It won't be an understatement to call it one of the best in the galaxy.
Every projectile hurtling towards the human army was destroyed beyond fail. Even the extraordinary arrows shot by powerful royal elves that could move through the air and change trajectory couldn't harm the human soldiers because of the small field projected above them to protect them.
This allowed the human soldiers on the ground to remain focused on the enemies in front of them with peace of mind.
It was the aerial troops that met in battle first. One side was mostly mechanical while the other was biological, but both sides were faster than the land troops. This made it so that they were first to meet each other in combat and begin exchanging deadly fire.
The sky became lit with fire and the roaring sounds of airplanes zooming by. One side was made of flesh and blood, while most of the other side was made of cold and calculating metal.
The flesh-and-blood army was larger in number, but the metal army was smarter, better coordinated, better individual fighters, and capable of more individual damage than the other army because of bombs.
However, it was too early to tell which side had the upper hand. Both flesh, blood, and metal were falling down from the sky right from the very beginning of the clash.
The two armies were also trading long-range attacks from the ground. This time, it was clear that the human army had the upper hand. Their bots simply had better perception, coordination, and response times than the elven soldiers.
Meanwhile, on the ground, the human soldiers were waiting for their enemies to arrive.
Their environment was a white tundra vastly different from the forest of green trees that used to exist where they stood. So they were standing on ice.
Fortunately, their boots had good metal grips so they wouldn't fall easily. They also had armor keeping their bodies cool and the air they breathed warm.
The elven soldiers didn't have this luxury. In fact, ice was a strange concept to them. The Lignum world had always been a world that was either in spring or summer. Never in their lives had they experienced so much cold before.
In fact, for many of them, this would be the first time that they would be seeing snow and ice. It reinforced the idea that the humans were demons.
Still, they had to brave the cold whiteness in front of them and confront the demons in a bid to expel them from their dear world. So they marched on into the darkness and onto the ice tundra.
Unfortunately, determination alone is not enough to win battles. Being unfamiliar with ice, most of the creatures were slipping and falling.
Some of them were outright freezing while others were battling the strange lethargy that the cold was inducing within them.
Then there was the constant darkness that blanketed the battlefield. It reduced visibility and coordination. If not for the shining lights of the human army in the distance, the elven army would get lost and be in disarray.
In short, the environment was against the elven army. The human soldiers on the hand had tools to help them in the fight and make up for their weakness. What's more, the elves couldn't even the playing field with their acid rain.
The progress of the elven army was so slow. They had to be slow or risk stepping on animals that couldn't walk well on the ice.
By the time they reached the human army, the weak ones were already feeling the chill in their lungs, blood, and bones. They were shaking like the leaves of a tree in a windy storm.
So about half of the elven army had been eliminated even before the battle, while the other half had been slowed down to some extent.
This only made the elves more determined to eliminate the humans. They shouted with hoarse voices as they ordered their troops to prepare for an engagement.
The two ground troops finally met in battle. It became a scene of carnage and destruction.
Most of the human soldiers stood still while the elven soldiers threw themselves at them. Only a select, powerful few broke ranks and ventured into the elven army to eliminate the elven commanders and sow chaos in the army.
There were also powerful creatures and elves in the elven army that did the same. They jumped over the weaklings straight into the human army and began wreaking havoc.
But these enemies that stood out and other powerful enemies that had an eye-catching performance within the elven army were quickly put down by sniper rifles and rail guns.
Troublesome enemies like that were targeted early and eliminated quickly. Command used sniper rifles and rail guns because the two weapons dealt immense singular damage.
They were also fast and precise. That way, damage to the human soldiers surrounding the enemies within the human army would be limited.

The shells and missiles, on the other hand, were reserved for generous use against targets within the elven army. After all, Command didn't care if other elven soldiers were killed because of their targeted strikes. In fact, they were looking forward to it and willing to facilitate it.
The fighting was chaotic for those on the ground and in the thick of it, but anyone with an overhead view would be able to tell at a glance who had the upper hand.@@novelbin@@
