Chapter 514

Chapter 514: Before Dawn 513 Chapter 514: Before Dawn 513 Blah blah blah—

The sound of an argument buzzed over the eardrum, but not a word could be understood.

Looking into the distance, it seemed to be a man and a woman arguing, both raising their voices, growing louder and faster, with sounds of different frequencies filled with anger and irritation intertwined.

The empty restaurant was completely filled with their dispute.

Half-asleep and half-awake, caught in confusion, unable to distinguish between dream and reality, hazily, in a misty halo of light, a girl with ears as pointed as an elf’s appeared before him.

Their gazes accidentally collided, which made Li Wei slightly startle, his consciousness somewhat hazy.

“So, do you know what they are arguing about?”

Her eyes lifted, veiled in a smoky haze, yet the clear spring-like eyes could not be hidden, with a hint of blue, clear and bright, and light brown hair lazily curling and draping down, her eyes and eyebrows exuding a childlike innocence and a quietly lingering sunniness.

It was just a brief moment, but it was captivating.

...

Then.

She flashed an apologetic smile, “Sorry, I only know they are speaking Italian, but my Italian really isn’t helpful at all.”

Li Wei gently lifted his chin, “Italian?

I thought it was German.”

Pfft.

Talia Ryder couldn’t help but laugh out loud—

Italian and German are indeed quite different, and there is no way to confuse the two; clearly, the young man in front of her was just making a joke.

Originally, Ryder had just noticed that his coffee cup was already empty.

She came over to ask if he needed a refill, but the conversation took an unexpected turn.

Looking up, Ryder could see the bright eyes on that clear-cut face, which still held stars despite the weariness and fatigue.

Ryder set down the coffee pot, pondering.

“Have you heard that couples lose the ability to listen to each other over time?”

Li Wei looked back, “Is that a scientific study or a folk saying?”

Ryder’s lips curved slightly, “If you believe it, then it’s a scientific study; if you don’t, then it’s a folk saying.”

“Ha, correct answer, Gryffindor gains ten points.” Li Wei laughed, “So, what’s the deal with this rumor?”

Ryder pursed her lips and chuckled softly, “The rumor is, men lose the ability to hear high pitches, while women can’t hear low pitches.

I think, they just intentionally ignore each other.”

“Oh.” Li Wei had a sudden realization, and couldn’t help but turn his head to look at the couple who were continuously gesturing and shouting at each other without hearing what the other was saying—spouses?

Partners?

A pair?

Beyoncé and Jay-Z came to his mind again.

“So, is this the law of nature, so that spouses can grow old together without trying to kill each other?

Some kind of survival of the fittest in a sense?”

Pfft.

Ryder’s smile curved up, “What do you say?”@@novelbin@@

Li Wei shrugged slightly, “Not for each other, but to let the world spin in their own way, since they don’t need to change for each other.”

“Oh, that sounds a bit sad.” Ryder tilted her head to examine Li Wei.

Li Wei chuckled lightly, “Growing up is always sad, because things start to get complicated; but fortunately, we can choose our attitude.”

Ryder quietly regarded Li Wei, paused for a moment, still unable to contain her curiosity, “What do you mean?”

Feeling the warmth in that gaze, Li Wei was, in fact, a bit dizzy, though he had stayed sober tonight to take care of Mahomes and Kelsey and hadn’t drunk much; still, he felt his head was somewhat heavy.

Thus.

Li Wei changed the topic, “Has anyone ever told you?

You walk like a tilde.”

Ryder was stunned, unable to believe her ears, “A tilde?”

“Ha,” Li Wei laughed, “it’s the accent mark on top of the Spanish letter ‘n’.”

Ryder couldn’t help but laugh too, “Oh God, I know what a tilde is, though I’m a foolish, vulgar American who doesn’t know any other languages and lacks any cultural background.

I bet you can speak at least three languages, but at least I’ve tried.

I’ve tried Spanish, I’ve tried French, even though I ended up knowing nothing, but for God’s sake, I’ve really put in a Herculean effort.”

The atmosphere lightened completely with a mix of self-mockery and teasing.

The corners of Li Wei’s eyes were also filled with laughter, “Don’t worry, let me tell you a secret, I’m not that amazing either; for instance, I don’t understand Italian.”

Ryder was startled again and couldn’t control herself any longer, covering her mouth as her shoulders began to shake uncontrollably with laughter.

Li Wei looked at the sprite-like girl in front of him, his smile pausing at the corners of his mouth, “Do you believe in soulmates?”

Ryder, “What?” She couldn’t hide her surprise.

How did the topic jump to this?

Li Wei explained, “I just said, we can choose different attitudes to face things, like, preserving some foolish, naïve romance.”

Ryder suddenly realized, “So, do you believe in soulmates?”

“I do,” Li Wei said without hesitation.

Ryder smiled, but did not speak, seemingly having a different opinion from Li Wei.

Li Wei didn’t mind, “I believe on this earth, we have many soulmates living in different corners.”

Ryder, “Many?

But, the stories I’ve heard are slightly different; each person might only have one soulmate, which is why soulmates are so rare, and some people don’t even believe in their existence.”

Li Wei shook his head, “No, I believe each person can have many soulmates, lots and lots.

However, it might be a special case for you; you might only have a few, they might be your soulmates, but most people on the earth aren’t your soulmates.”

Ryder tilted her head, “Why?”

Li Wei, “Because you don’t believe in soulmates.”

Emphatically.

Ryder tried to argue, “I didn’t say I don’t believe.”

Li Wei didn’t speak, just quietly looked at Ryder, his eyes full of smiles.

Ryder bit her lower lip gently, stopped struggling stubbornly, her beautiful eyes flinched slightly, then she changed the subject, “How many soulmates?”

Li Wei raised his eyebrows.

Ryder, “Me, how many soulmates do you think I have?”

Li Wei didn’t immediately answer, but fell into deep thought, seriously considering, “For you, I think…” his expression was especially fierce as he struggled terribly before giving an answer like a prophet, “Possibly four.”

“Four?”

“Yes, four.”

“Oh, God, that’s really a lot,” Ryder exclaimed exaggeratedly, “but so far I haven’t met any of them.”

Li Wei shook his head, “No, you have four soulmates, God will arrange for them to appear on your path, you’re always going to meet them.

Or perhaps in a 24-hour diner.”

Ryder gently lifted her chin, looking meaningfully at Li Wei, remaining silent, just quietly staring, her eyes slowly brimming with a smile.

Li Wei didn’t look away either, openly gazing back, letting the air fill with a palpable atmosphere.

In the end, it was Ryder who broke first, hurriedly lowering her gaze to hide it, but then lifting her eyes again, gazing directly into Li Wei’s, “What about you, how many soulmates do you have?”

Li Wei didn’t immediately speak, but squinted his eyes, seriously pondering as if counting carefully, “Roughly about twelve hundred.”
