Chapter 165
Ethan displayed a few props in his hand. Logan and Laura stood around him watching, and even Auriel perched on Laura's head, continually sizing up the items in Ethan's hand.
"Don't see anything special."
Logan reached out and picked one up. He examined it front and back for a while but still didn't find anything unusual. From his perspective, it looked like a cheap trinket from a roadside stall. He'd feel ripped off even if it cost just a dollar.
"How do you use it?"
Just because he couldn't see anything didn't mean Logan doubted Ethan's abilities. He understood very well that compared to Ethan, who had spent years studying and researching this stuff, he was an amateur. What concerned him more was whether this thing would be a hassle to use. That last belt was already enough of a pain.
"It's very simple. Just wear it on your body."
These types of amulets generally worked just by being worn. The ones he made worked the same way, though they were limited by the materials on hand and his own technical skill. They were consumables.
"Based on the interference and attacks I've experienced before, each amulet can support our activity in the central area of the island for about five hours."
"You mean this thing can't protect us all the time?" Logan glanced at the remaining amulets in Ethan's hand and immediately understood why Ethan had made so many at once. "No wonder these look so rough. You didn't even bother shaping them, did you?"
"I made them purely for practical purposes. They're just emergency-use transitional items. I'll consider aesthetics when I develop specialized protective gear in the future."
The amulets in their hands really didn't look like much, no one would bother picking them up if they were thrown on the ground. It wasn't that Ethan couldn't make them look better; it just wasn't necessary.
"The leftover materials I have should be enough to make a few more. I plan to use everything I brought to make amulets. Our goal has already been achieved."
The hardest part, the research and prototype phase was complete. Now, as long as there was enough time, Ethan could keep converting materials into amulets, though it would be time-consuming.
That's also why he made a point of coming to Paradise Island. If he tried making amulets off the island and wasted time, no one could guarantee what might happen in the meantime.
Would new adventurers arrive on the island? Would more powerful adventurers show up to compete—or even try to eliminate them? Would the island itself undergo some strange change, like the mental disturbances intensifying? Or worse, what if the amulet production took so long that the entire island sank? That would be the ultimate waste of time.
Using the space-time circle to do all of this in another world would perfectly avoid these problems.
And he could also use the opportunity to visit Diana, all while waiting for the original plot of Wonder Woman to unfold.
He didn't have to wait long. In fact, it happened exactly when he wanted it to.
Just as Ethan finished using all the raw materials he brought and had crafted a considerable number of amulets, he sat on the wooden chair outside the hut, basking in the sun, and watched as an old-fashioned plane passed through the barrier surrounding Paradise Island and spiraled down toward the sea.
"The story begins."
He thought he'd have to wait a while, but as soon as he finished his work, Steve Trevor flew into Paradise Island in that plane, officially kicking off the Wonder Woman storyline.
Diana, who had also been sunbathing, stood up immediately. Ethan's cabin was built on the edge of a cliff, giving a clear view of the entire beach. He had built and lived in the house here for a long time, never expecting to one day witness the beginning of this "story."
But it didn't really matter anymore. With his interference, even if the general plot of Wonder Woman remained the same, many of the details would definitely change significantly.
This time, Ethan had no plans to interfere. He just wanted to quietly watch Diana defeat Ares.
As Diana took off into the sky and flew straight toward the crash site, Logan who had been chopping wood nearby also walked over and looked out at the distant sea.
"Someone came in?"
"Looks like a fighter pilot. Not sure which side he's from."
Logan had fought in World War I, but when the plane came down, he was busy chopping wood. By the time he arrived, the aircraft had already crashed into the sea. Otherwise, he could have easily identified the model and which side it belonged to.
"The First World War."
He was just about to recall a few stories from the past when Diana, who had been underwater for a while, resurfaced, dragging someone behind her—clearly Steve Trevor.
"Let's go take a look."
Not far from Ethan's hut, there was a slope that led down the cliff to the beach. However, it would take a bit of time to reach the exact spot where Diana came ashore. By the time Logan and Ethan arrived, the pilot had already regained consciousness and was staring blankly at Diana in front of him.
"German."
The moment Logan saw the uniform, he identified the man's affiliation. However, Ethan knew this guy was actually part of the American Expeditionary Forces. He was currently working with the British, infiltrating the German camp to gather intelligence, hence the uniform.
Steve Trevor was still a bit dazed, but upon hearing someone approach and call him German, he immediately jumped up from the beach and asked Logan, "Where is this? Who are you people?"
In his eyes, the group before him looked very strange.
A young woman whose clothing didn't resemble anything modern, and two men in rather odd outfits, though slightly more normal compared to the woman.
"This is Paradise Island."
Ethan and Logan had no interest in paying too much attention to him. Ethan already knew who he was, and Logan had fought in both world wars. How could he get close to a man who appeared to be a German soldier? Still, he noted that the man was speaking English, which was interesting.
"Paradise Island? Where's that?"
Before he could ask anything else, another 'intruder' appeared at sea in the distance, this time, a heavily damaged warship that was slowly sinking. Several lifeboats were making their way to the beach, each carrying heavily armed soldiers.
"Germans." Steve kept addressing the group before him, "We need to get out of here—quickly."
His reaction intrigued Logan. This man's identity clearly wasn't simple: "Aren't you with them?"
Logan wasn't like Diana in the original plot, completely clueless about the situation. Steve couldn't get away with a vague "I'm a good guy, they're the bad guys" to trick this strong man. Logan had already identified him as part of the German army, meaning he clearly knew what was going on outside. This place didn't seem isolated from the world.
"It's complicated. Now's not the time to explain. We have to leave. If those guys catch us, it won't end well."
"So... those people are evil?"
Listening to Logan's exchange with the stranger, Diana understood one thing: this person and the approaching group from the sea weren't on the same side, even if they wore the same uniform. And based on Logan's reaction, that incoming group seemed to be evil?
"Yes, they're evil."
Diana frowned and looked to Ethan for confirmation, but to her surprise, the person who usually had an answer for everything simply shrugged and said he wouldn't help this time: "For the time being, you'll have to decide everything on your own. I won't offer any guidance... Diana, this is your best chance to learn how to truly integrate into the world."
This would be Diana's final journey of learning. Along the way, she would mature, turn her theoretical knowledge into practical understanding, grasp the gap between ideals and reality, and comprehend the complexity of humanity.
Only after this journey would Diana truly become Wonder Woman. Right now, while her combat strength might already be maxed out, there were still many areas where she lacked maturity. Ethan could help boost her fighting power, but he couldn't also make her max-level in every other way.
So in this plot, aside from watching Diana fight Ares, they would also witness the true birth of Wonder Woman.
"Can we stop talking about learning and all that? They're about to land... Watch out!"
Steve looked at the group speaking so casually while he was sweating nervously. He had no idea what they were even discussing. Couldn't they move to a safer place to continue this learning? Just then, he noticed the soldiers at sea begin to open fire and quickly warned the others.
But as soon as he shouted, he witnessed a scene that left him in disbelief.
Diana merely shifted her body slightly and raised her arm. Sparks burst from her shining bracers, followed by sand spraying up from the beach—the bullet had been deflected.
"A coincidence?"
As he wondered whether the bullet had just happened to hit her bracer, the woman turned to face the German soldiers and began deflecting bullet after bullet with precise, fluid movements.
And if that wasn't shocking enough, the young man beside her waved his hand gently, and a white light enveloped the entire group, including himself. It made Steve feel as if he were dreaming.
"Where the hell am I?"
