Chapter 246 We're the bad ones

After being ushered out of the Celes camp Uriel turned to his friend with the biggest 'I told you so' look on his face to which Sam shrugged. Even if they didn't manage to extort a mining laser out of them that didn't mean they would have to go back with their empty hands.

"It's your turn now." Uriel said as he patted the loin of his faithful jaguar spirit.

The blue flames that came off from the creature's shoulder bones erupted in a violent flare before becoming faint and ghostly, then the feline disappeared in the dark.

"Are you sure you want to risk your pet? Those guys are pretty strong and If half of what I've heard about Sword is true, we might be in trouble if she finds out we're sabotaging them."

"Of course I'm sure, the minute I sense the jaguar spirit is in danger I'll just cancel the summon and if they didn't want to be sabotaged they should have paid the agreed price."

"I know but... aren't we taking it too far?" Sam hesitated. Even if he was the one who started things, he did so with a hot head and didn't think things through. It wasn't that he didn't care about the consequences of his actions, he just ignored them but Uriel's case was different.

The first time he heard about the jaguar spirit was from Nika who complained about it being a nuisance to their operation. The jaguar spirit was smart and cunning, it would only attack those weaker than itself and then hide whenever strong hunters arrived.

Their objective wasn't to kill anyone or cause any permanent harm to the Celes company, just scare them a bit to stall their operation enough so they would be forced to either ask for help to the other two factions or delay their production.

"This isn't taking things to far. If anything, I think it's a cheap price to pay. They harmed the innocent Air spirit people despite knowing they were harmless, they drove away your wife and they refused to pay the agreed price for our information. Besides, if their operation is delayed it will drive up the prices of the orichalcum which will result in us getting our money back."

"Yeah, but what if they find out the jaguar belongs to you? I don't think that Cassandra will take that lightly."

"That might be true, but from what Luna has told me, Cassandra wouldn't dare hurt me or else..."

"Or else what?"

"I don't know, she simply remained silent, but if I'm being honest it scares me when she does that." Sam nodded in agreement. As much as they trusted Luna, they had to admit that she was weird even for their standards which was saying a lot.

Meanwhile, things at the Dungeon Raiders camp were going as expected. What the Armstrong men lacked in wits they made up for in muscle and under Phlox's guidance they soon got the hang of mining the mystical metal.

After breaking the big rocks the smaller pieces were transported to the pushcart they brought along until it was filled and they started filling up their backpacks with as much as they could carry.

Under Amy's supervision, the mining operation was running as smoothly as it could thanks to her obsession for sticking the rules but it wasn't until Uriel came back along with the jaguar that they could finally go back.

"What is that thing!?" Amy gasped at the sight of the jaguar.

"It's a trade secret from our company, I can't disclose any information about it." Sam replied.

Everyone from the mining crew gathered around the cryptid with curiosity, even in its wounded state it looked powerful and they could sense it was too dangerous to approach it but they noticed how Uriel was the only one who didn't seem bothered by the jaguar's presence.@@novelbin@@

"Is that your trait!? You can summon creatures? Now I see why they hired you." The Armstrong leader seemed impressed.

"He's just the handler so stop asking questions or I'll reduce your pay." At Sam's words the group started packing up their camp while leaving anything not essential to their trip back to the city.

Sam was in a much brighter mood on their way back to the city, not only because they were carrying a huge load of orichalcum but also because their vengeance paid out well.

In the end, Cassandra didn't reach to any of the factions and instead tried to sort things on her own which resulted in a huge delay in the Celes company extraction process and the Dungeon Raiders were the first ones to go back with their cargo to the city were Nika and Samuel Song were already waiting to greet them

Sam and Amy respectfully approached them, which surprised Sam's father. Up to that point Sam had always acted entitled to the benefits of being part of the Song company while refusing to perform his duty. He never cared to pursue a government position nor did he make any effort to boost the reputation of their family.

To add insult to injury, he didn't even go through with the arranged marriage which was the last opportunity given to him.

Even after being disowned he acted like a brat and demanded things from them, but the young man in front of Samuel wasn't a dishonored former member of the Song family. He was a young hunter who belonged to a rising company with a bright future ahead of him.

He looked at his son with pride for the first time, but didn't say anything out of line and kept their interaction purely professional.

For such a high government official to be present it meant it had to be a great deal and it gathered a lot of attention, something Uriel didn't particularly enjoy so he parted from the group as soon as he was able to.

Besides, using the jaguar to stall the Celes company drained most of their batteries and he was forced to maintain the summon using his own flux energy, but now he was running on fumes.
