Chapter 254 A Ranger lesson
"Listen well kids, this kind of emergency isn't out of the ordinary at all. They happen so often that most experienced rangers ignore them altogether, what's weird about this one is that the alert message was open. Many students like yourselves received it which got me to think it was a low level threat because usually only rangers would get the notification.
That is the only reason why I allowed you to participate, but..." Charlie looked at the students with pitiful eyes.
"What about that? We can still go back." The male student said.
"You don't get it? This is a set up, if we go back many students might fall into the trap. Not that I care, but Professor Charlie is a ranger tasked with protecting citizens. Our only choice is to enter the watchtower." Uriel explained.
"Why would we enter!? You said it yourself, it's a trap!"
Uriel glared at the student like he was the dumbest person on the face of the earth, but thinking back he'd met quite a bunch of people like that before.@@novelbin@@
"We need to enter precisely because it's a trap. The whole point of setting up a trap is to anticipate the victim's movements and thoughts which means whoever planned it must know we'll realize it's a trap at some point. Even if we turn our backs now, nothing assures us we'll be safe. On the other hand, if more people show up our group will become stronger."
"I like how you think!" Charlie blew a kiss towards Uriel who dodge it as though it was a deadly projectile, then she continued. "If we wait for more people, they'll be forced to fight us on our terms."
"Who would do something like that? Why? We're all humans, we're supposed to be on the same side." The female student cried.
"Not really, kid. If that were the case we rangers wouldn't have so much trouble. So far you've been sheltered by the city and our government, but once you're outside city gates everything is fair game. Looters, thieves, killers even, people without morals can still get powerful traits." Charlie explained.
"We can't rule out cryptids yet. The stronger they get, the smarter they become." Uriel added.
"Who are you anyways? I never seen you in any second year lectures. Are you a third year student?"
"I'm a first year ascended, my name is Sage."
"Doesn't ring a bell..." The female student pondered.
"No way! We're stuck with a freshman! We're dead, we're all going to die here."
The two students were starting to lose all sense of reason, but fortunately for them, Charlie was an expert on keeping everyone on high spirits.
"Have you heard about the Lightbringer? He's one of my students now. When I first heard that a group of freshmen students killed an entity level cryptid I thought it was bull, especially when I heard they were only ascended but after meeting him I can clearly see why. He and his team were all exceptional people and survived through much worse situations."
Uriel almost let out a chuckle when he heard Professor Charlie speaking like that about Sam.
"Lightbringer is your student!?" The female student gasped.
"You can't possibly compare us with them, they're one in a million! We're just regular students. They even founded their own company!"
"I would think so too, except after meeting him I realized he's a kid just like you guys. Granted, he's a bit on the stronger side of his rank, but he's also a sweetie." Charlie managed to distract the students for a while answering questions about the Lightbringer, the most famous freshman student in the city.
She told them how he saved everyone on his generation as soon as he acquired his trait by warning them of a danger that would have wipe out the whole yearly incursion. After a while, the students managed to calm down and Uriel though it was the best time to go to the watchtower.
"Where do you think you're going?" Charlie asked him and Uriel simply pointed towards the structure. "No, we need to stay here."
"But we've lost too much time and we need to go inside before it gets dark."
"No, we're staying put and wait for more people to arrive."
Uriel didn't agree with that decision, whoever or whatever lured them there would be less of a threat during the day. In the case of cryptids it was obvious, but it was the same if their enemy was human because they would be better prepared. Still, Charlie was the one in charge and he decided to just follow her lead.
They waited for hours, but then it became clear that no one else was coming and Charlie was starting to get anxious. Uriel was right, she knew it. Find adventures on My Virtual Library Empire
No matter how she saw it, the best shot they had was to head to the watchtower and either face whatever danger awaited or investigate the situation. The problem was that her hesitance to get into a close quarters fight costed them too much time and it would soon get dark.
"Alright, If we don't go now we'll have to spend the night in the wild."
"No! Please! We can stay here, spending the night on the wilderness is not unusual for rangers. I bet that if we lay low we'll be safe." The male student begged.
"Safe? I'm a heavenly rank, cryptids are drawn towards me like moths to a light bulb. We've been lucky so far because it's daytime, but as soon as it gets dark they become more active.
Besides, the whole reason why there's an outpost here is because this place isn't safe." Charlie stood up, dusted her thighs and started walking towards the building without taking her eyes from it, ready to fire as soon as an enemy showed up.
Much to her relief, the way was clear and everything seemed nice, but that was until she realized something that threw her off entirely.
"The door is broken!"
What do you think?
