Chapter 256 The strange rules on the abandoned outpost Part 2

"Alan, stop messing around. Hey, this is serious." The female student said, struggling to believe that something happened to her friend. "Alan, Alaaaaan!" She shouted in a high pitch.

"Get a hold of yourself, Liv!" Charlie said in a whisper.

As soon as the male student fell silent, they knew something happened to him. They didn't know what and the curiosity and fear were starting to overcome them, but they remained stiffly quiet after that.

"Can- can we turn around now?" Liv asked amidst stuttering. There were only two things on her mind at the moment. She wanted to know whether her friend had disappeared or died and she didn't want to be the next to share his fate.

"Yeah, it should be ok now." Uriel said as he turned around.

The place where Alan was before was empty and there were no signs of struggle or even a drop of blood, but Uriel knew what happened. Although the male student fell silent out of a sudden, Uriel's mystical sense allowed him to feel his presence fade slowly into nothing and there was only one explanation for that: death.

"Alan!? Where are you? Can you hear me?" Liv said.

"Don't bother." Uriel placed a hand on her shoulder trying to calm her down. Not to soothe her feelings but to keep her from making too much sound, but the female student wasn't in the right mindset and snapped at him.

"Who do you think you are to tell me what to do!? Huh? My friend went missing, we need to search for him right now!"

"He's right, there's nothing we can do for Alan." Charlie said.

"My point exactly, we need to find a safe place and barricade it."

"No way! We need to call for help!" Liv had clearly lost her ability to see reason, but luckily Charlie was there to help her gather herself with a powerful slap to the face that left her in a daze.

"We can't call for help. We were drawn here because we responded to a call for help, who knows how many people fell in this trap before us. We need to break the chain, if we fall, we'll fall knowing we prevented other people from dying."

Uriel's face crumpled, not because he didn't agree with her decision of not calling for help but the reason behind it seemed dumb. Oddly enough, it didn't have anything to do with his detached emotions but with his rational thinking.@@novelbin@@

Being raised on the slums meant living in a selfish way or dying in the gutter. Something like the greater good never crossed his mind, but that didn't mean he wasn't a kind person. He used to care for those he knew and even those who were close to him, even if they weren't his friends and he would usually help others as long as it wasn't too costly for him.

"I know what we're dealing with and it's bad news."

"What is it? Did you recognize the trait being used?" Charlie asked.

"It's not a trait, this is the same pattern of behavior of a skinwalker."

"A skinwalker!? Don't you mean, the skinwalker? That thing was killed a while ago!" Liv argued.

"They're not unique creatures, they're also on the weaker side as far as entity rank cryptids go. But this thing is on a completely different level."

"How do you know this things?" Charlie asked with suspicion.

"I'm friends with the Lightbringer." Uriel replied, surprised he didn't have to lie this time.

"I see... so, what should we do?"

"First, like I said, it's the same pattern of behavior, but it's also different. This can only mean one thing, it's a horror rank creature."

Reward: 750 trites.

"This is great!" Uriel cheered at the possibility of receiving money and such a sum wasn't small by any means. It was the equivalent to 750k credits, which Uriel would have deemed as a life changing amount of money not too long ago but it was still enough money to compel him to help the girls that were trapped with him.

"Why would that be great!? You're not making any sense. Miss Charlie, please let's go, I beg of you!"

"No, we can't leave this place. We have to follow the rules to the letter or we'll end up just like that dude."

"What do you propose then?" Charlie asked, completely ignoring the female student rants.

"Not opening or closing any doors should be easy enough, not leaving this place while it's dark outside is not a problem either, but that part about not seeing our own reflection can be a bit tricky. We could stumble upon a mirror by accident or even a pool of water.. wait, there's a faucet open, I've been hearing it for a while now."

"Yes, it's probably from the bathroom but the door is closed."

"Crap! We need to prevent any water from flooding out of the bathroom or we'll have a lot of trouble avoiding our reflection."

They looked all around the place and used whatever rags or clothes they found to try and seal the small slit beneath the door and it wasn't long after that they started getting wet.

"Whew! just in time," Charlie wiped her forehead after taking care of the immediate threat, but their situation didn't improve in any way. "So, what now?"

"Why do you ask him? He's just a first year student."

"Don't be silly, Liv, when you don't know something you ask people who do know. It's only natural I ask him."

"But you're a professor!"

"Yep! And I didn't make it this far by pretending I know everything." She shrugged.

"I'd say we need to look for items made of silver. Skinwalkers are allergic to silver, but there's a problem with that."

"Polished metal is reflective." Charlie sighed.

"Precisely, that means we don't have any means of fighting back and we can only try to gain some time by following the rules."

"This is unbelievable! It's obvious this isn't a cryptid's doing, they don't even know how to write and even if they could do it, they're incapable of setting up such an elaborate trap, they're just dumb beasts!" Liv raised the tone of her voice and her words echoed in the narrow hallway, then a rustling sound came from upstairs.
