Chapter 317 Rapa Nui's Museum
To say Uriel was dumbfounded would be an understatement. He couldn't fathom such a small town surviving through the onslaught of even the weakest cryptids. The buildings were made of wood or concrete, the doors and windows weren't boarded or sealed, but there weren't any battle traces or destruction.
If anything, the buildings looked a bit weathered and dirty, but not to the point where he could have guessed the town was abandoned.
"Hello, anybody here?" He knocked on a random door but, just as expected, he received no answer. He went to the next, then the next house, he even tried knocking on a hotel but no one answered.
The town was either abandoned or the people were hiding behind closed doors. Uriel didn't want to disturb the peace in case people were hiding from him, so he decided against bashing a random house door but the hotel was a different matter.
It was supposed to be open for guests and he had enough money to buy the hotel out of his pocket money, so he barged in after breaking the door open.
The place was dark and the light switchs weren't working, but his mystical sense didn't alert him of any dangers and the only people that would have been able to escape it must have been traitless. He looked around searching for clues, but the place was completely normal. It was clean, everything was in its place and the only strange thing was that there were no people around.
Then it dawned on him, there was a possibility that he was the only person alive in the whole island and the thought of it left him completely appaled. He wasn't conscious of it, but his greatest fear wasn't to die or even bugs, his greatest fear was to be alone.
"What if something in the air is killing people, but I'm immune because of Water warlock's blessing?" Uriel thought out loud, finding no relief in the sound of his voice.
It wasn't the first time he was completely by himself. In fact, most of his adventure inside the dungeon beneath Chichén Itzá happened without Nika by his side. But being alone in a place that should be crowded with people, like the zeppelin or the hotel, made the contrast so evident he couldn't bear the loneliness.

He sat at the table in the hotel's restaurant, it was just a small room modestly furnished but what caught his eye was the decoration. There were several wooden dolls, idols and even some trinkets made of bish bones and coral, but that brought him to realize that he may find some artifacts of cultural value he might be able to store inside his museum.
One by one he tried each and every one of them, it wasn't like he wanted them just to become stronger or to sate his ever present greed. Finding an artifact was his last resort in hopes of gaining knowledge or maybe an ability that would allow him to shed some light about people's disappearance. However, none of them worked.
They were all reproductions of the originals, in other words, they were fake and meant just for decoration.
But that didn't lower his morale. He knew a great deal about Easter Island's culture, tradition but more importantly, he knew there was a museum in the town of Hanga Roa.
With that in mind, he rushed outside the museum as though he was being chased by ghosts, driven by the intense desire to find someone, anyone. He darted across the streets using his Dash skill, not wanting to waste a single second more in useless endeavors and eventually, he found what he was looking for.
It was a square building on the left and rounded on the right, made with stone and wood. It was way smaller than he expected, but the possibilities of what he could find inside were endless.
Just as expected, though, things weren't so easy. Most of the remains he found were incomplete or destroyed. Some artifacts were so old they would break apart just by his touch and he decided to not tamper with them. There was a wooden sword, but that turned out to be a replica too and he was stating to lose all faith in his own idea.@@novelbin@@
"Nothing! How can there be no suitable artifacts in a whole museum!?" He shouted in frustration, but then his eyes were directed towards a broken glass in one of the displays. It was empty, but there was a small sign beneath it that read: 'Chief's reimiro.'
Out of curiosity, he inspected the other displays trying to find more places where the glass was shattered under the dim light of the moon and he was able to confirm that some artifacts had been stolen.
"The reimiro is missing, but so are the Tahonga and the mangai. The only thing they have in common is that they're symbols, the first represents authority, the tahonga means adulthood and the mangai means protection. Whoever stole them, must either possess a deep knowledge in archaeology or is very familiar with the Rapa Nui civilization.
But then..." Uriel was able to draw many conclusions from just the missing items. Nevertheless, he still needed evidence to support his theories.
The only thing he knew for sure was that there had to be at least one other person in the island at some point. It wasn't much, but it was impossible to tell when was the glass broken and it had to do for the time being.
Even though he didn't find any artifacts he could use in the museum, it was helpful in a different manner. Besides, the museum isn't the only place where cultural remains can be found, especially in a touristic place where people's culture fed their livelyhood and he knew exactly where he needed to go next.
With high hopes of finding someone who could explain things to him, Uriel set off to see the Moais.
What do you think?
