Chapter 333 Treating the prisoners

Everyone tried to make sense of what they saw, but their minds refused to cooperate. It was a known fact that only hybrids left behind flux orbs, but they couldn't deny the evidence in front of their eyes.

"So, do hybrids leave fux orbs behind?" Nika said with a questioning look, being careful not to adress Luna directly but fully expecting her to answer.

"Uhm, no."

"Then, what happened here?" Sam too was in a daze.

"I don't think you guys would like the answer." Uriel replied. Among all of them, he was the only one who knew what happened.

The cannibals thought that since they were the only ones who could hear the voice in their head they were special which wasn't that far from the truth. They were chosen by the Aku Aku, probably because of their weak willpower, and they were possessed by them. Of course, that meant that they killed people they could have potentially saved and that was something none of them needed to hear. Explore more stories at My Virtual Library Empire

Fearing something of the sorts, Uriel's friends decided not to pry any further and, instead, focused on the prisoners. They were so packed up together it was impossible to tell how many they were, but such a feat was nothing for Sam.

"There's at least two thousand people in here." Sam informed as his yellow eyes gleamed in the dark.

"Stop peeping at the naked ladies, you pervert!" Medusa scolded him, though everyone looked so sickly and skinny not even Sam showed any interest in them. He was about to tell a joke about them looking like extras from the dawn of the dead, but then he realized how insensitive that would be.

At a short distance, Luna was turning back from her werewolf form into her human form and Uriel was forced to use Dash to cover her up before Sam had a chance to take a peek from her youthful body. Uriel swooped the baggy hoodie down Luna's body and she adjusted it with a faint smile on her face.

"Uhm, thanks."

"Can they be saved?" Uriel asked, fearing they were mistreated for too long.

"Impossible, even with a medkit, there would only be enough serum to save a handful. They're just, uhm, skin and bones. If they eat, the energy expense required to digest the food would kill them."

"I see," Uriel thought back at Lamar's lectures trying to figure out a way to save the people, but then an idea came to mind. "do you think that something like this could work?" He followed his words showing Luna a can of his energy drink.

"Uhm, maybe. I think professor Lamar said it was similar to serum, but we would need to adjust the dose a few times. Some people might, uhm, die. Are you fine with that?"

It was a tough choice, saving over two thousand people at the expense of a few victims, but it was made easier by his messed up emotions.

"Let's do it." Uriel nodded as he walked towards the prisoners, but contrary to his expectations, instead of being grateful towards them, they flinched and cowered behind each other.

Their movements were limited by their restraints and they were so weak they were barely able to moan, but they saw what happened.

"No, please. I don't want to be eaten by a beast." A woman said with a voice so weak it sounded like a whisper as she tried to lift her hands.

"Take a look at yourself, no one would want to touch you, let alone eat you. Now open wide." Uriel handled the woman with complete disregard for her comfort, but with the same silk touch he would handle a precious artifact.

"Now start with a small dose, we don't want her to pass out." Luna said as she examined the woman's body. She wasn't hurt in any way, but because of the starvation she looked as frail as a twig. The woman drank a sip of the energy drink, but then fainted.

"Oh well..." Uriel sighed.

"She's not dead, yet. If only we were able to know how much they weighed..."

Uriel bit his lip in frustration, it was probably the one time where his lewd magazine would have been useful because it would allow him to know exactly how much they weighed, though meeting the requirements to activate it would have been nearly impossible.

Fortunately for everyone, Uriel was able to buy a weighing machine and one by one they started treating the prisoners and administer the proper dose of energy drink. It was far from the mainstream treatment they could get in a hospital, but the results were pretty much the same.

As soon as Luna got the hang of the situation, Uriel left all the work to the others while he focused on trying to find the dungeon entrance. He was certain it had to be somewhere in the cavern, but it was impossible without a lightsource. Now, however, not only the flashlights started working again, he also had Sam by his side and he recruited him to explore the deepest part of the cave.

Medusa was reluctant to let him go, but she was too worried about the prisoners and decided to stay and help Luna. Before leaving, Uriel bought as many supplies as he could from his trait: Energy drink kegs, food, blankets and other basic supplies, but then his face paled and he felt sick to the stomach.

"You should ask Luna to examine you." Said Medusa placing a hand in his forehead, but Uriel shook his head as he already knew what affected him. It was something he wasn't expecting, something far more terrible than any sickness he ever experienced: He ran out of funds.

His ability to buy things from the souvenir shop had been the most reliable and versatile and without any money he wouldn't be able to use it anymore. It had been a long while since the last time his bank account was empty, and that would make things more difficult for him but that only motivated him even more to find the dungeon and claim possession of all the treasures within it.
