Chapter 388: New allies
After a long talk with Charlie, Uriel was more or less convinced that she actually wanted to help. He still thought it could be a trap, but eeven if it was, he had nothing to lose by contacting the head of the rangers and he was actually excited to meet him. The reason for that was that he was among the very few people that knew how to reach Mister Scofield.
It had been a while since he last saw the librarian and even though he learned he was a holy rank hunter, he couldn't help but worry about his safety. Especially since he wondered what mission could be so important as to dispatch the only holy rank hunter in the city.
If by some miracle he managed to speak to Mister Scofield, he knew that he would believe him and would take his words seriously. As always, he was the one person he trusted above all the rest, he trusted Mister Scofield more than he trusted his friends. After all, Sam did betray him, Medusa broke up with him, Nika was never that trusthworthy and Luna was a hybrid.
'Now that I think about it, Luna might be a hybrid, but she's on humanity's side. I wonder if there's a way to convince more hybrids to join us.' He inwardly thought as he addressed a questioning gaze to Charlie who was walking besides him.
"Do you like what you see?" Faithful to her character, she didn't miss the chance to tease him, but now he knew she was a hybrid it only made things more awkward.
"Why are you helping us?"
"I have my reasons..." Her words only added to Uriel's suspicions about her.
"You do know if you take me to a trap all I'd need to do to take you down is point a UV light your way."
"Relax! I'm doing this because of my father. He's the only family I have left and I don't want to lose him and I know he would refuse to evacuate the city. He's stubborn as a mule, even if the whole city falls to pieces he'll remain here."
It didn't take long until they reached the ranger station downtown. It was supposed to work all day and night in a similar fashion to police stations of the old times, but now it was closed and Uriel knew the reason why. They were expecting him.
"Mister Magnum, this way please." A ranger greeted Uriel with a salute, something extremely rare for rangers, but even more strange was the group of people inside the office Uriel was taken to.
"Charlotte!? What are you doing here!?" A man wearing a leather hat, boots also made of leather and a vest exclaimed in shock.
"Hi, dad..." Charlie said looking the other way in embarrassment.
Uriel's brows furrowed at the sight of her meek behavior, but din't waste any time mocking her as he would have in the past. After Charlie betrayed them, Uriel didn't care if she lived or died. What he did care about, however, was about the presence of a strange woman. Someone he had never seen before.
She looked just like a secretary, but her presence was almost as powerful as Jon's, though Uriel was still trying to get accustomed to the enhanced senses of a heavenly rank hunter.
"This is my best apprentice, Magnum." Said truesight.
"Huh? Magnum is my apprentice." Charlie rebuked.
"You can't be serious, I brought him into our ranks."
"You're mistaken, he joined my course at the college!"
The two rangers began bickering among themselves and Uriel walked past them, directly towards the woman sitting on the table and he extended his arm.
"Good evening, my name is Sage. I'm glad you were able to make some time to join us."
"Hey, kid... you know who she is?" The cowboy asked with a flabbergasted expression.
"No, but my guess is she holds an important position in the government."
"That's correct, I'm the head of the Cryptid hunting agency," The woman replied as she adjusted her glasses, but then she followed with a question. "I was under the impression that your name was Magnum. Are you the 'Sage' everyone's been looking for?"
"I am, but before you arrest me, hand me to the Mapple corp, the Celes company or even the Fallen corporation, you need to listen to me."
"I have no intention fo turning you over. I'm more interested in knowing if what the head of the rangers said is the truth."
"That depends. If he said there's cryptids inside this city and they're taking over the east, north and south district by infiltrating various facilities, then yes. But before continuing this talk, we need to make this room secure."
"Fine, you two, leave this room." The woman glared at both Charlie and Truesight, but none of them moved until the head of the rangers echoed her command.
Uriel then explained them the situation with the Fallen corporation, the Dungeon Raiders and most of what he knew. He made sure to leave everything related to Water warlock out of his recount of the events and only mentioned what he considered to be strictly necessary to get their cooperation.
In fact, more than asking for their help he just wanted them to keep out of his way. The only thing he wanted was to inform them of the situation so they would call Mister Scofield, but things weren't so simple. After hearing from Uriel's mouth about the skinwalker den in the underground fighting arena both the woman and the cowboy were left with their mouths agape.
"I can't believe this! An ascended not only killed an entity level cryptid in a one sided fight, but then he went and destroyed their nest..." The woman who had remained stoic up until that point, exclaimed in utter disbelief.
"I'm not an ascende anymore." Uriel shrugged.
"No, there's no way you were an ascended when that happened." The woman insisted, but Charlie's father shook his head with both eyes closed.
"I saw him before, and now he looks like a complete different person."
"If this is all true... then... there's no choce, we need the Quill here." The woman managed to say amidst stutters and a grin was formed on Uriel's face. It was the first piece of the domino maze he was building. It was the first step to defeat the Fallen corporation and put an end to Sam's plan, now all Uriel needed was patience, or so he thought.
What do you think?
