Chapter 43
On the way home after eating hotpot, Qiu Sheng asked Zhong Jin, "Where are you staying tonight? I can drop you off."
Qiu Sheng turned her head from the window, "I might as well crash at your place for the night, don't you have two rooms?"
At the red light ahead, Zhong Jin stepped on the brake and stopped to wait.
"Did I agree to you crashing at my place?"
Qiu Sheng replied, "Well, I have to be with my child, right? If you agree, I'll stay over. If you don't, I'll take the child with me."
Sometimes, when you're at a loss for words, you just have to laugh.
Zhong Jin chuckled, "The child might not even be yours. Let's do a paternity test tomorrow before anything else."
"Of course, we'll do the paternity test. But if it turns out that we're mother and daughter, I'm taking Little Tong with me."
Zhong Jin gripped the steering wheel, suddenly feeling anxious. Yes, if Qiu Sheng and Little Tong are mother and daughter, what then? It's only natural for a mother to take her daughter. Although he's the father, it doesn't mean he can monopolize the child and not let her see her mother.
But he couldn't imagine what his life would turn into if he lost Little Tong.
While he was lost in thought, the traffic light turned green, but his car didn't move. It wasn't until the car behind honked that he drove off.
Qiu Sheng also noticed Zhong Jin's suddenly somber face and didn't press the issue. She was determined to take the child, but arguing about it before the paternity test results came out was pointless.
Qiu Sheng turned to look at the child dozing off in the car seat next to her, her chubby little face nodding off in sleep.
Perhaps sensing Qiu Sheng's gaze, the child, not fully asleep, suddenly opened her big, bright eyes and grinned at Qiu Sheng.
The child leaned her head over, her forehead rubbing against Qiu Sheng's arm. Although her mother's scent was different from before, she still felt a natural affection for this beautiful face.
Qiu Sheng felt the warm body temperature of the child on her arm, and only now did she feel the reality of having a child.
Becoming a mother without any pain, skipping all the hardships, and directly having a soft, cute little dumpling. It was really too lucky, so lucky that she wanted to cry.
She touched the child's tender little face, her heart melting bit by bit.
Zhong Jin saw the heartwarming scene of the mother and daughter embracing in the rearview mirror and coldly reminded, "Don't get too emotional too soon, maybe the paternity test will prove otherwise."
Seeing Qiu Sheng's murderous gaze, Zhong Jin quickly added, "You can stay at my place temporarily, let's wait for the paternity test results first."
He had thought it through; if Qiu Sheng stayed at a hotel, knowing her, she would definitely find a way to get the child by her side, even if it meant stealing the child.
Zhong Jin had personally witnessed how crazy Qiu Sheng could be when she wanted a limited edition bag. During the pre-sale period, she went to the store window every day for half a month, each time bringing different little gifts and snacks for the saleswoman.
Finally, when the bag went on sale, the saleswoman, who had become her friend, reserved one for her immediately.
A woman like Qiu Sheng, with such determination, would succeed in anything she set her mind to.
So Zhong Jin thought it best to nip her desire to have the child in the bud right from the start.
On the way home, Zhong Jin had already formulated a complete plan to secure the child.
Unaware of this, Qiu Sheng patted the back of Zhong Jin's driver's seat, "I forgot my suitcase at the police station, I need to go get it."
By now, they had already arrived at the apartment building. Zhong Jin said to Qiu Sheng, "Can you take a taxi to get it yourself?"
"Sure, you can stop the car up ahead."
Little Tong tightly held her mother's hand, "I want to go with you."
Zhong Jin, who absolutely couldn't bear to be separated from his daughter for even a second, immediately changed his mind, "I'll take you there, you can't stop here."
Qiu Sheng glanced at the large blue parking sign on the roadside and let out an almost imperceptible snort, "Hmph, men."
When they arrived at the police station, Little Tong was already asleep, leaning against Qiu Sheng, her little hand clutching her mother's finger, her head resting on Qiu Sheng's arm, sleeping soundly.
Not wanting to wake the child, Zhong Jin got out of the car to help Qiu Sheng get her suitcase.
He went inside, but didn't see Qiu Sheng's suitcase in the corner of the lobby as she had mentioned. After looking around, he still couldn't find it.
Zhong Jin found Little Wang, who was lecturing some drunk troublemakers in the mediation room, and asked about the suitcase.
Little Wang took him to the locker room and pulled out a large LV suitcase, "Captain, I thought this suitcase looked valuable, so I kept it here for safekeeping."
"Alright, thanks for your trouble."
Zhong Jin pushed the suitcase, which was almost as tall as his leg, out of the police station.
The suitcase was ridiculously large, and out of professional habit, Zhong Jin compared the size of the suitcase and reasonably suspected that Qiu Sheng had come with the determination to leave him and take the child. This suitcase could probably fit a disassembled version of him.
Back home, after the hassle of moving the large suitcase into the room, Little Tong woke up from her nap.
Since the child was awake, Zhong Jin told her, "Take a bath before going back to sleep."
Little Tong rubbed her eyes, selectively deaf, and headed straight for the room. Ever since she was banned from playing with the bubble machine, she had started avoiding baths again.
Zhong Jin raised his voice, "Zhong Yuntong, take a bath, did you hear me?"
Qiu Sheng looked at him, "Why are you yelling at her?"
"If I don't yell, do you think she'll listen?"
Qiu Sheng walked over, took Little Tong's hand, and gently asked, "Little Tong, how about taking a bath with Mommy?"
The unlucky child, who had been avoiding the bath, happily agreed upon hearing she could bathe with her mother, even suggesting, "Let's wash my hair and my back too."
"Alright, Mommy will make you smell nice."
Hand in hand, they opened the large suitcase Qiu Sheng had brought, squatting on the floor and rummaging through it, pulling out various bottles and jars.
"This is for washing hair."
"This is honey-scented body wash. Look, it says it's safe for kids."
"And this, a floral face mask. Hmm, maybe we shouldn't use this on your face. How about Mommy uses it on your feet later?"
The mother and daughter's heads were close together as Qiu Sheng kept pulling out beautifully packaged bottles and jars, while Little Tong held her little face, exclaiming "Wow" and "So cool" in admiration.
What a spineless little brat.
Zhong Jin quietly walked into the kitchen, took down the pink duck bubble gun hidden on top of the fridge, and nonchalantly placed it by the bathroom door.
Then he casually walked over and sat down on the sofa.
When they finally picked out the bath products for the night and headed to the bathroom with their arms full of bottles and jars, Little Tong inevitably noticed the bubble gun lying by the bathroom door.
Zhong Jin flipped through the detective novel in his hands, glanced over, and a triumphant smile appeared on his lips.
Let Qiu Sheng experience the power of the bubble gun.
Bathing with the child? Honey-scented body wash and floral face masks? She'll be begging for mercy once the bathroom is filled with bubbles.
Then Zhong Jin saw his chubby little girl stretch out her foot in Crocs, kick the pink duck bubble gun aside, and happily walk into the bathroom hand in hand with her mother.
Before the bathroom door closed, Zhong Jin faintly heard Qiu Sheng ask, "What was that you just kicked?"
The unlucky child loudly replied, "Nothing."
Zhong Jin looked at the pink duck lying on the floor, his heart shattered, really wanting to sing "It's Not a Crime for Men to Cry."
After Qiu Sheng and the child finished their bath, Zhong Jin offered to blow-dry the child's hair. Qiu Sheng still had to apply a bunch of gooey substances to her face and indeed couldn't manage the child, so she readily agreed.
Finally, after everything was settled, a new problem arose. Zhong Jin thought that since the child had been sleeping with him for so long, she would surely sleep better with him at night.
Qiu Sheng believed that it was more convenient for a girl to sleep with her mother.
The two of them argued for a while until Little Tong brought over a step stool, stood on it, and took down the timer hanging above the refrigerator. She set the timer for 15 minutes, held it up as it ticked, and walked over to them.
“You can only argue for one timer’s worth of time.”
Zhong Jin and Qiu Sheng immediately stopped bickering. In the quiet air, the ticking of the timer was the only sound.
Qiu Sheng blinked and was the first to explain, “Little Tong, do you hate it when Mom and Dad argue? We’re not arguing; we’re just discussing something.”
Little Tong continued holding the timer, her big, round eyes staring seriously. “You can only argue for one timer. If you can’t figure it out, just start fighting already.”
Qiu Sheng, “......”
Zhong Jin, “......”
Little Tong added, “You’re annoying me with your arguing.”
Then, the parents decided to turn the tables on the poor child. They threw the question back at her, “Who do you want to sleep with tonight? You decide.”
The unlucky child shouted back, “I want to sleep in the middle!”
“You can only choose one.”
The child glared at the two stern adults and backed down.
Her clever little brain weighed the options. Since she usually bathed with her mom, she decided to sleep with her dad tonight to avoid upsetting these childish adults again.
Lying in the bed covered with a cartoon Minions blanket, Zhong Jin pulled the slightly drafty quilt around her and rested his chin on her head.
“Zhong Yuntong, will you ever leave Daddy?”@@novelbin@@
In the quiet of the night, the usually strong man let down his guard, revealing a vulnerable side. He was truly afraid of losing his precious little one.
The child’s face pressed against her father’s chest, her chubby cheeks squished. She pushed Zhong Jin away with her little hands, sat up, knelt on the bed, and leaned over to cup his face. With utmost seriousness, she promised,
“I’ll never leave you. I love you 100 million percent.”
Seeing his daughter’s earnest little face, Zhong Jin felt something swell in his chest. He wrapped his arms around her small shoulders. “But what if Mommy wants to take you away?”
The child sat up straight, lifted her pajama top, and pointed to her round little belly. She patted her waistband and declared,
“I’ll tie you right here and take you with me.”
What do you think?
