chapter 2 The Crimson Dawn
Chapter 2: The Crimson Dawn
The first light of dawn painted the sky in hues of crimson and gold, but the village of Emberfall remained eerily silent. The unnatural stillness from the night before had not lifted, and the villagers moved about their morning routines with unease. Whispers of strange occurrences spread like wildfire—cracked earth, twisted shadows, and a chilling cold that had seeped into the valley.
Sui Xuanchi stood at the edge of the village, his back against the ancient oak tree that marked the boundary between Emberfall and the untamed wilderness beyond. The Fire Fang Snake coiled lazily around his arm, its flames subdued, as if wary of the abyssal energy that now lingered within him. The Ebon Shard remained sheathed at his side, its presence a constant reminder of the power he had unleashed.
He had spent the rest of the night practicing with the shard, testing its limits and learning to control its eerie energy. Each swing of the blade sent ripples through the air, and each strike left behind a lingering cold that refused to dissipate. The shard’s power was intoxicating, but it came at a cost—the whispers in his mind grew louder with every use, urging him to embrace the abyss.
“Xuanchi!” a voice called, breaking his concentration.
He turned to see Lian Mei approaching, her long black hair tied back in a loose braid, her eyes sharp with curiosity. She was the village’s most talented young cultivator, her martial soul, the Silver Moon Lynx, granting her unmatched agility and grace. Despite her aloof demeanor, she had always been intrigued by Sui Xuanchi’s dual souls, though she had never admitted it.
“You’ve been out here all night,” she said, her tone a mix of concern and suspicion. “What are you hiding?”
Sui Xuanchi hesitated. Lian Mei was one of the few people he trusted, but the Ebon Shard’s power was too dangerous to reveal. “Just training,” he replied, his voice steady. “The Fire Fang Snake has been restless lately.”
Lian Mei raised an eyebrow, clearly unconvinced. “Restless? The entire village felt something last night. The ground shook, and the air turned cold. Don’t tell me that was just your Fire Fang Snake.”
Before Sui Xuanchi could respond, a commotion erupted from the village square. Shouts and cries filled the air, and the two of them exchanged a glance before sprinting toward the source of the disturbance.
In the square, a group of strangers had arrived—cultivators clad in black robes adorned with silver insignias. Their leader, a tall man with a scar running down his cheek, stood at the center, his piercing gaze sweeping over the gathered villagers. Behind him, a massive wolf with fur as dark as midnight growled lowly, its eyes glowing with a sinister light.
“Who are you?” demanded Elder Feng, the village’s leader, his voice trembling despite his attempt to appear authoritative.
The scarred man smirked. “We are the Shadow Fang Sect, and we’ve come for the boy with the dual martial souls.”
The villagers gasped, their eyes darting toward Sui Xuanchi as he and Lian Mei arrived at the edge of the crowd. Sui Xuanchi’s heart raced, but he forced himself to remain calm. The Shadow Fang Sect was notorious for their ruthless methods and insatiable hunger for power. If they had come for him, it could only mean one thing—they knew about the Ebon Shard.
“There’s no one like that here,” Elder Feng said, his voice wavering. “You’ve made a mistake.”
The scarred man’s smirk widened. “Do not insult my intelligence, old man. We felt the awakening of the abyss last night. The boy belongs to us now.”
Sui Xuanchi clenched his fists, the Fire Fang Snake stirring restlessly around his arm. He could feel the Ebon Shard’s cold energy pulsing at his side, urging him to act. But before he could make a move, Lian Mei stepped forward, her Silver Moon Lynx materializing behind her in a shimmering aura.
“You’re not taking anyone,” she said, her voice cold and unwavering.
The scarred man laughed, a harsh, grating sound. “A brave little girl. But bravery won’t save you.”
With a flick of his hand, the Shadow Fang cultivators surged forward, their martial souls manifesting in a flurry of dark energy. The villagers scattered, screaming in terror, as the square descended into chaos.
Sui Xuanchi acted on instinct. The Fire Fang Snake erupted in a blaze of fiery energy, its molten scales glowing as it lunged at the nearest attacker. But even as he fought, he could feel the Ebon Shard’s power stirring within him, its whispers growing louder.
“Use us,” the shard seemed to say. “Embrace the abyss.”
As the battle raged, the scarred man turned his attention to Sui Xuanchi, his dark wolf lunging with terrifying speed. Sui Xuanchi barely dodged, the wolf’s claws grazing his arm. He knew he couldn’t hold back any longer.
With a deep breath, he drew the Ebon Shard.
The moment the blade left its sheath, the air grew heavy, and the light seemed to dim. The scarred man’s eyes widened in shock as the abyssal energy surged, twisting the shadows into grotesque shapes. Sui Xuanchi swung the shard, and a wave of darkness sliced through the air, striking the dark wolf and sending it howling in pain.
The scarred man staggered back, his confidence faltering. “What… what are you?”
Sui Xuanchi didn’t answer. He could feel the shard’s power consuming him, its whispers drowning out all other thoughts. He raised the blade again, but before he could strike, Lian Mei appeared at his side, her Silver Moon Lynx pouncing on the scarred man and forcing him to retreat.
“We need to go,” she said urgently, her eyes filled with a mixture of fear and determination.
Sui Xuanchi nodded, sheathing the Ebon Shard and allowing Lian Mei to pull him away from the square. The Shadow Fang cultivators, now wary of the abyssal power they had witnessed, did not pursue.
As they fled into the wilderness, Sui Xuanchi couldn’t shake the feeling that this was only the beginning. The Ebon Shard had awakened, and the cosmos would never be the same.
